Chapter 4 - TIES THAT BIND

The storm broke two days later.
Claire was in the middle of a high-stakes briefing with her executive team when her phone buzzed with an urgent priority alert from her security detail.
She tapped the screen, her blood running cold.
Attached to an anonymous email sent to the entire Northstar Board of Directors—and leaked to several prominent tech tabloids—were photographs. Pictures of Mason carrying Claire up the stairs of his apartment building. Pictures of Claire laughing on his worn sofa.
Accompanying the images was a vicious, carefully crafted narrative: “Disabled CEO Compromises Security, Conducts Unprofessional Relationship with Low-Level Contractor in Unsanitary Conditions.”
Before Claire could even process the rage boiling in her throat, her desk phone rang. It was Elena, her voice shaking.
“Ms. Whitmore... Child Protective Services is at Mr. Reed’s apartment right now. Someone filed an emergency report alleging child endangerment, financial instability, and exposure of a minor to unstable corporate figures.”
Claire felt as though the oxygen had been sucked out of the room. Vance wasn't just coming for her company anymore. He was coming for a motherless eight-year-old child.
“Cancel all my appointments,” Claire commanded, her voice dropping into a register of terrifying, calm absolute authority. “Get the company limousine. Call Arthur Pendelton at Pendelton & Associates—tell him I need the top family law attorney in the state on my dime in ten minutes.”
Twenty minutes later, two official state vehicles were parked outside Mason’s apartment building.
In the small living room, a sharp-faced caseworker from the Department of Children, Youth, and Families was holding a clipboard, standing over a visibly shaken Mason. Lucy was huddled in the corner, clutching her gray stuffed rabbit, tears streaming down her pale cheeks.
“Mr. Reed,” the caseworker was saying coldly, “given your irregular contract income, the allegations of unsafe adult individuals visiting the premises, and the lack of a secondary legal guardian, we are obligated to place Lucy in temporary state custody pending a full home environment audit—”
“The hell you are!” Mason roared, his body trembling with a terrifying mix of fury and desperate helplessness. “She has everything she needs! Look around! She is loved, she is fed, she is safe!”
“Love isn't a legal metric, Mr. Reed—”
The front door swung open with a heavy thud.
Claire rolled smoothly into the apartment, followed closely by Arthur Pendelton—a legendary trial attorney who charged fifteen hundred dollars an hour—and two towering corporate security guards.
“No, but a federal tort lawsuit for malicious prosecution and civil rights violations certainly is,” Pendelton announced smoothly, stepping past the caseworker and dropping a thick stack of legal briefs onto the coffee table.
The caseworker blinked, caught off guard by the sudden arrival of Washington’s most feared attorney. “Who are you?”
“I am Arthur Pendelton, representing Mr. Mason Reed and Miss Lucy Reed,” the lawyer stated coldly. “And this is Ms. Claire Whitmore, founder and CEO of Northstar Robotics. If you lay a single finger on that child, I will file an injunction against your department within twenty minutes, personally sue you for color-of-law violations, and ensure your supervisor is served with a subpoena before dinner.”
The caseworker went pale, looking at the formidable team standing in the small living room.
Claire rolled directly over to Lucy, who immediately threw her small arms around Claire’s neck, burying her face in Claire’s silk blazer. Claire held her tight, feeling the girl’s small, shivering frame.
“You’re safe, Lucy,” Claire whispered into her hair, her eyes burning with fierce, unstoppable maternal protection. “Nobody is taking you anywhere. I promise you.”
Claire looked up at the caseworker, her gaze sharp enough to cut through steel. “The individual who filed that false report is currently under active investigation for corporate espionage and federal wire fraud. If you proceed with this baseless harassment, your name will be added to the criminal indictment. Do I make myself clear?”
The caseworker swallowed hard, hurriedly tucking her clipboard under her arm. “We... we will suspend the emergency order pending verification of counsel’s documentation.”
She practically ran out the door.
The moment the door closed, Mason dropped to his knees, burying his face in his hands as a ragged, silent sob tore through his chest. The terror of almost losing his daughter had completely drained him.
Claire rolled her chair over to him. She placed her soft, manicured hand on his broad, trembling shoulder.
“Mason,” she said softly.
He looked up, his eyes bloodshot and filled with raw emotion. “He almost took her, Claire. Because of me... because I helped you.”
“No,” Claire said firmly, reaching out to gently touch his cheek. “He did this because he’s a coward who thinks people like us are weak. He thinks my chair makes me helpless, and he thinks your hard work makes you disposable. We are going to show him exactly how wrong he is.”
Lucy squeezed in between them, wrapping her arms around both of them. “Wolf pack?” she whimpered softly.
Mason looked at Claire, seeing not a powerful boss or a disabled woman, but the fiercest, most beautiful human being he had ever known.
May you like
“Wolf pack,” Mason whispered, placing his large hand over Claire’s.
