Chapter 5 - THE CHAPEL WHERE THE FAMILY BURIED ITS SINS

Dominic survived the gunshot.

The bullet had passed through his shoulder, but years in hiding and recent imprisonment left him dangerously weak. Rose refused to leave his hospital room until Maya arrived.

The moment Maya saw her niece, both stopped.

Rose had Elena’s eyes.

Maya knelt.

“I’m your aunt.”

Rose studied her.

“Mom said you would come if she couldn’t.”

Maya pulled the child into her arms.

Sebastian watched from the doorway, understanding that the family Gideon tried to destroy was assembling itself without permission.

Dominic woke briefly.

“Gideon wants the triplets,” he whispered.

“Why?” Sebastian asked.

“The inheritance protocol contains more than voting rights. Your three biological children together can unlock the original Vale trust.”

“What is inside it?”

“Records. Names. Accounts going back forty years.”

Gideon had created the protocol as a safeguard. He believed no heir would ever produce three children outside an approved marriage.

The same mechanism intended to protect his secrets now threatened to reveal them.

Elena was leverage.

The triplets were keys.

Malcolm Hart wanted the accounts.

Adrian wanted immunity and money.

Gideon wanted everything buried.

The family chapel stood on Vale estate grounds, surrounded by stone walls and private security.

Sebastian grew up attending funerals there.

His father.

His mother.

Dominic’s false burial.

Each ceremony had strengthened Gideon’s myth.

Now the chapel would become the place that myth ended.

Maya refused to remain behind.

“Elena is my sister.”

“The children need you,” Sebastian said.

“They also need to see that we do not abandon people because rescuing them is dangerous.”

He recognized his own argument reflected back.

“You do not enter the chapel.”

“I enter the command vehicle.”

“Under federal protection.”

“Yes.”

Clarissa joined her.

“My father will expect me.”

Maya looked at her.

“Can you face him?”

“No.”

“Good. Fear may keep you careful.”

They placed electronic replicas of the triplets’ trust signatures inside three biometric devices. Gideon would believe the children were present in an armored vehicle.

The real children remained at a protected hospital location with Marco, Dominic, and Rose.

Sebastian approached the chapel alone carrying the devices.

Federal agents waited beyond the walls.

Inside, candles burned before old Vale portraits.

Elena sat near the altar.

Malcolm Hart stood beside her with a gun.

Adrian Cross remained near the rear doors.

Gideon occupied the front pew.

“You came without the children,” he said.

“I brought what unlocks the trust.”

“Machines can be deceived.”

“The devices contain current biometric records.”

Gideon’s eyes moved toward the cases.

“Place them on the altar.”

Sebastian did.

Malcolm connected the devices to an old terminal hidden beneath the floor.

The Vale trust system activated.

Three green lights appeared.

CHILD ONE VERIFIED.

CHILD TWO VERIFIED.

CHILD THREE VERIFIED.

The terminal requested Gideon’s master code.

He entered it.

Elena looked toward Sebastian.

A silent signal passed between them.

The trap was ready.

Instead of opening the accounts privately, the system transmitted every file to federal servers and independent journalists.

Maya and Clarissa had changed the destination.

Gideon stared at the screen.

“What did you do?”

Sebastian looked at his grandfather.

“I made the family honest.”

Malcolm pulled the connection cable.

Too late.

Names flooded onto the screen.

Politicians.

Judges.

Corporate executives.

Security contractors.

Adoption agencies.

Shipping companies.

Medical charities.

The Vale and Hart empires had funded decades of coercion, illegal surveillance, financial blackmail, and concealed deaths.

Dominic and Elena had uncovered only the newest layer.

Gideon stood.

“You have destroyed your children’s inheritance.”

“No. I destroyed the price attached to it.”

Malcolm pressed the gun against Elena.

“We can still leave.”

Clarissa’s voice came through the chapel speakers.

“No, Father.”

Malcolm froze.

Hidden cameras activated.

Clarissa appeared on a screen from the command vehicle.

“You told me power was the only protection a woman could trust,” she said. “You used my engagement, my accounts, and my future as business tools.”

“I built everything for you.”

“You built a cage and called it a throne.”

Malcolm fired at the screen.

Elena threw herself sideways.

Sebastian moved toward her.

Adrian blocked him.

For years, Adrian had served both Gideon and Dominic, claiming loyalty to whichever man controlled the room.

Now his fear became desperation.

“You should have stayed divorced,” he told Sebastian. “Everyone would have survived.”

“Maya was never the danger.”

“No. Love was.”

Adrian attacked.

Sebastian fought him near the altar while Malcolm dragged Elena toward a side door.

Gideon reached for the terminal, attempting to trigger the chapel’s fire system and destroy the physical records below.

Maya saw it through the cameras.

She activated the emergency lock.

Steel shutters sealed the archive room.

Gideon’s code failed.

He looked toward the camera.

“Maya.”

She answered through the speaker.

“You intercepted my letters.”

“You were unsuitable.”

“I gave birth to three Vale heirs without one dollar from your family.”

“You lived because I allowed it.”

“No. I lived despite you.”

Federal agents breached the chapel doors.

Malcolm fired toward them.

Elena struck his arm with the chair.

The shot entered the ceiling.

Captain Ortiz tackled him.

Sebastian forced Adrian to the floor but did not kill him.

He held him until officers arrived.

Gideon remained near the altar.

For the first time in his life, no one obeyed him.

He looked at Sebastian.

“You think prison will hold me?”

“No.”

Gideon smiled.

“Then you understand.”

Sebastian shook his head.

“I think time will.”

The old man’s confidence weakened.

He was eighty-two.

Years of trials, public exposure, and confinement would take the only resource he could not buy back.

Elena was carried outside.

Maya ran from the command vehicle.

The sisters met on the chapel steps.

For a moment, neither moved.

Then Elena whispered, “You kept the key.”

Maya began crying.

“You came back.”

“I tried.”

They held each other while cameras recorded the collapse of two empires behind them.

Sebastian stood apart.

Noah, Ivy, and Owen were safe.

Elena was alive.

Dominic was alive.

The secrets were public.

Yet one question remained.

May you like

Would Maya ever allow Sebastian to become part of the family he had helped break?

That answer belonged entirely to her.
