Chapter 4 - THE FIANCÉE WHO CHOSE HER OWN SIDE

Clarissa held the weapon with both hands.

Maya stood behind Sebastian.

Marco raised his own gun.

“Lower it,” he ordered.

Clarissa did not move.

Then a shadow appeared behind Maya.

One of the attackers had entered through the ventilation access and was lifting a knife.

Clarissa fired.

The bullet struck him in the shoulder.

He fell before reaching Maya.

“I was aiming past her,” Clarissa said.

Marco lowered his weapon slightly.

Sebastian returned to Dominic’s call.

“Why did you tell me not to trust her?”

“Because Malcolm controls her accounts, her security, and every person around her. Whether she knows it or not, he has used her to track you.”

Clarissa’s face hardened.

“My father has monitored me since I was twelve.”

“Then prove you can break the pattern,” Dominic said through the speaker.

Federal agents cleared the remaining attackers.

Two were connected to Hart Financial security. One carried direct orders from Malcolm.

Capture Maya alive.

Take the three keys.

There was only one physical key.

The “three keys” meant Noah, Ivy, and Owen.

The children themselves activated the inheritance protocol.

Sebastian moved everyone from the vault to a secure federal building.

Clarissa formally ended the engagement before cameras outside Vale Tower.

“There will be no marriage between Hart and Vale,” she said. “The proposed alliance concealed financial crimes currently under federal investigation.”

Her father appeared on television thirty minutes later.

Malcolm Hart called his daughter unstable, Sebastian violent, and Maya an opportunist using children to obtain wealth.

The public story became war.

Sebastian released DNA results only to the court, not the media. Maya agreed after Ortiz explained that legal recognition protected the children’s trust rights.

The results confirmed what their faces already revealed.

All three were Sebastian’s.

When he read the report, he sat alone inside an interview room for nearly an hour.

Father of Noah Sebastian Vale.

Father of Ivy Elena Vale.

Father of Owen Dominic Vale.

Maya had given each child a middle name tied to the family she claimed to hate.

Noah carried Sebastian’s.

Ivy carried Elena’s.

Owen carried Dominic’s.

She had preserved connections even while believing every Vale rejected them.

That evening, Sebastian visited the triplets under supervision.

Maya remained in the room.

Noah sat at a small table building a tower from wooden blocks. Ivy drew circles in purple crayon. Owen held his toy dog.

Sebastian removed his expensive coat and sat on the floor.

None of them approached.

He did not force conversation.

After ten minutes, Ivy held up her paper.

“It’s a family.”

Sebastian looked at the five figures.

One large woman.

Three small children.

A dark shape standing outside the house.

“Who is that?” he asked.

“The man from the park.”

“Why is he outside?”

“Mommy hasn’t opened the door.”

Maya looked away.

Sebastian nodded.

“That makes sense.”

Noah studied him.

“Are you rich?”

Maya almost choked.

Sebastian answered carefully.

“Yes.”

“Do you have dinosaurs?”

“No.”

“Then what’s the point?”

Ivy laughed.

Owen pushed the toy dog toward Sebastian.

“You can hold him.”

Sebastian accepted it as though it were a crown.

The visit lasted thirty minutes.

When he stood to leave, Noah asked, “Will you come back?”

“If your mother allows it.”

Maya met Sebastian’s eyes.

“Tomorrow. Same time.”

It was not forgiveness.

It was a door opening one inch.

The investigation led to a maternity facility in Pennsylvania owned by a Hart charity. Records showed Elena had been treated there under a false name after her disappearance.

Federal agents raided it and found hidden rooms beneath the abandoned building.

Photographs covered one wall.

Maya.

The triplets.

Clarissa.

Sebastian.

Rose.

Someone had tracked every branch of both families.

In a locked cabinet, agents recovered letters Maya wrote during pregnancy.

All addressed to Sebastian.

One included the first ultrasound image showing three small shapes.

Another contained a photograph of Maya at seven months, standing alone beside a borrowed crib.

Sebastian read every letter.

The first was hopeful.

I know you said there was never an us, but there are three of them now. Whatever happened between us, they deserve to know you.

The second was frightened.

Your office says you refuse my calls. I do not believe you would ignore children without seeing their faces.

The final letter was written after the triplets’ birth.

I waited for you until the hospital discharged us. I kept thinking the elevator doors would open and you would walk through them. I understand now. I will not contact you again.

Sebastian folded over the table.

Marco remained near the door.

“I did that to her.”

“Gideon intercepted the letters.”

“I created the lie he used.”

There was no comfort available.

The maternity facility also contained video of Elena.

She was alive three months earlier.

Gideon sat across from her.

“Tell Dominic the children are safe,” he said.

“They are not safe while you breathe,” Elena answered.

Gideon smiled.

“Then make yourself useful.”

Elena appeared thinner but unbroken.

She had been forced to help decode Dominic’s evidence because she designed part of the encryption.

The video included a location marker.

Vale Harbor, a private shipping terminal in New Jersey.

Sebastian knew it well.

His grandfather had built sealed storage rooms beneath Warehouse Nine.

Federal agents prepared a raid.

Before they moved, Dominic called again.

“Do not come to Vale Harbor.”

“You expect me to leave Elena there?”

“It is a trap. Gideon has explosives beneath the warehouse.”

“Where are you?”

“Inside.”

“With Rose?”

“Yes.”

“Then get her out.”

“I cannot without the access codes.”

“Send me the system.”

Dominic laughed without humor.

“You still think every problem obeys you.”

“No. I think brothers should stop deciding alone who gets sacrificed.”

The words silenced him.

Sebastian continued.

“You disappeared to protect me. I divorced Maya to protect her. We both became Gideon’s sons.”

Dominic’s breathing changed.

“What do you propose?”

“We trust the women.”

Maya, Elena, Clarissa, and Captain Ortiz worked from the recovered ledgers.

Elena’s old encryption contained a pattern based on childhood addresses she shared with Maya.

Clarissa knew Hart’s emergency override codes.

Together, they found a secondary entrance to Warehouse Nine through an abandoned ferry tunnel.

The raid began before dawn.

Sebastian entered with federal agents.

Maya remained in command under protest, tracking cameras through Elena’s code.

Inside the underground level, they found Rose first.

A six-year-old girl sat inside a locked office, holding a photograph of her mother.

Dominic lay unconscious beside her.

He had been shot.

Elena was missing.

Gideon’s voice came through the warehouse speakers.

“Sebastian, you have always mistaken love for strength.”

Sebastian lifted Dominic while agents carried Rose.

Gideon continued.

“Bring the three children to the estate, or Elena dies at noon.”

A live feed appeared.

Elena sat tied to a chair inside the Vale family chapel.

Behind her stood Malcolm Hart.

And Adrian Cross.
