Chapter 5 - THE CHILD IN THE GREENHOUSE

Clara wanted to go.
Lorenzo refused.
“She’s my daughter.”
“She’s mine too.”
“You don’t get to use that now.”
The words cut deeper than she intended.
Lorenzo flinched.
But he did not fight back.
“You’re right.”
Clara stared.
That wasn’t the answer she expected.
He continued.
“But I’m still not sending you into a trap.”
“She’s three!”
“I know exactly how old she is.”
“You’ve known for twelve hours.”
His jaw tightened.
“And I would still burn this entire house down to get her back.”
The room went silent.
Marco stood near the door with ice against his split lip.
Clara looked at him.
“You.”
Marco straightened.
“You were there.”
Three years ago.
Bus station.
Rain.
A man who kept his eyes forward while Clara cried silently in the back seat.
She had forgotten his face.
Not his voice.
“Mrs. Vance, I—”
“Don’t.”
He stopped.
Lorenzo placed the ransom note on the table.
“Enzo wants the ledger.”
“I don’t have it here.”
“Where?”
Clara hesitated.
“Storage locker.”
“Location.”
She told him.
Marco dispatched two trusted men.
Lorenzo caught his arm.
“No one else knows.”
Marco nodded.
“How do we know Enzo really has Lily?” Clara demanded.
Lorenzo looked at the note.
“We don’t.”
His phone buzzed.
A video arrived.
Lily sat on a wooden bench.
Her eyes were swollen from crying.
A greenhouse window stood behind her.
A man’s voice said, “Tell Mommy you’re all right.”
Lily sniffed.
“Mommy?”
Clara covered her mouth.
“I want Bear.”
The video ended.
Clara nearly collapsed.
Lorenzo caught her.
For one second, she let him.
Then she pulled away.
“We go now.”
“The old greenhouse is on the north edge of the property.”
“So she’s still here.”
“Yes.”
“Then why are we standing here?”
“Because that’s what Enzo wants.”
Clara turned on him.
“Stop thinking like a boss and think like her father.”
Lorenzo’s eyes flashed.
“I am.”
“No, you’re planning.”
“Planning is how I bring her home.”
“You don’t know her!”
That stopped him.
Clara’s voice broke.
“She hates loud noises. She gets scared in dark rooms. When she cries too hard, she throws up. She needs someone to rub her back after.”
Lorenzo looked down.
“She calls pancakes ‘pan-cakes’ like they’re two separate words. She sleeps with Bear under her chin. She asks for water every night even if she isn’t thirsty.”
Each sentence stole something from him.
“She doesn’t like strangers touching her hair.”
Clara wiped her face.
“And she thinks thunder is the sky moving furniture.”
Lorenzo closed his eyes.
When he opened them, the boss was gone.
Only a father remained.
“Then we get her back.”
They made a copy of the ledger pages when Marco’s men returned with the box.
Clara had kept everything.
Bank transfers.
Dates.
Vendor names.
Payments linked to Enzo’s companies.
Enough evidence to destroy him financially.
Possibly enough to put him in prison.
Lorenzo studied one page.
“Why didn’t you use this years ago?”
“Because I was alone.”
“You could have gone to police.”
“And said what? I had documents stolen from a Moretti company while carrying your child?”
Fair.
They reached the greenhouse shortly before dusk.
Lorenzo did not go alone.
But Enzo didn’t need to know that.
Trusted men remained outside the tree line.
Marco controlled communications.
Clara stayed in a vehicle fifty yards away despite hating every second of it.
Lorenzo walked toward the greenhouse carrying the metal document box.
He entered.
The smell of damp earth hit first.
Then old glass.
Dead vines curled across wooden frames.
Lily sat near the center.
Alone.
“Daddy!”
The word struck him.
She had known him one day.
Still, she said it.
He took one step.
“Stop.”
Enzo emerged from behind a row of dead citrus trees.
Sixty-two.
Silver hair.
Tailored coat.
A pistol hanging loosely at his side.
Lorenzo looked only at Lily.
“Are you hurt?”
She shook her head.
“I want Mommy.”
“I know.”
Enzo smiled.
“She has Clara’s stubbornness.”
Lorenzo’s eyes moved to him.
“You touched my daughter.”
“Don’t become theatrical.”
“She’s three.”
“She’s leverage.”
Lorenzo’s expression changed.
Enzo sighed.
“That is exactly why you were never ready.”
“For what?”
“To lead.”
Lorenzo almost laughed.
“You kidnapped a toddler because you think that proves strength?”
“I did what your father would have done.”
“My father would have shot you for speaking his name while holding a child hostage.”
Enzo’s smile vanished.
“Give me the ledger.”
Lorenzo lifted the box.
“Let Lily walk to me.”
“No.”
“You wanted the evidence.”
“I want Clara too.”
Lorenzo’s blood chilled.
“She stays out of this.”
“She was always in it.”
Enzo looked toward the greenhouse windows.
“She found numbers she didn’t understand.”
“She understood them perfectly.”
“Yes.”
Enzo’s face hardened.
“That was the problem.”
Lorenzo finally understood.
“You arranged the crash.”
“Yes.”
“You forged my voice.”
“A crude recording. Effective enough.”
“You told her I threatened Lily.”
“I had someone answer the phone.”
Lorenzo’s hand tightened around the box.
“Why?”
“Because you were becoming soft.”
“I was changing things.”
“You were dismantling your father’s empire piece by piece.”
“I was making it legitimate.”
“You were destroying it.”
Enzo gestured toward Lily.
“And now look at you.”
Lily’s eyes moved between them.
She didn’t understand the words.
She understood the tone.
“Daddy.”
Lorenzo’s focus snapped back.
“I’m here.”
Enzo raised the pistol slightly.
“Box.”
Lorenzo set it on the ground.
Then pushed it forward.
Enzo moved toward it.
That was when a sound came from behind him.
A small metallic click.
Enzo froze.
Clara stood at the side entrance.
Lorenzo’s face changed.
“What are you doing?”
She ignored him.
Her hands were empty.
But her phone was raised.
“You wanted me.”
Enzo stared.
“Clara.”
Lily cried.
“Mommy!”
Clara’s entire body trembled.
“Let her go.”
Enzo smiled.
“You should have stayed dead.”
Clara lifted the phone.
“You just admitted everything.”
His smile disappeared.
“What?”
“Forgery. The crash. The accounts.”
Lorenzo almost smiled.
Clara had always been smarter than men who underestimated her.
Enzo raised the gun.
Marco’s voice thundered from outside.
“Drop it!”
Armed men appeared beyond the glass.
Enzo grabbed Lily.
She screamed.
Lorenzo moved.
Everything happened at once.
Glass shattered somewhere to the left.
Clara screamed Lily’s name.
Enzo pulled the child against him.
Lorenzo stopped.
“Don’t.”
Enzo backed toward the rear door.
“Tell your men to lower their weapons.”
Lorenzo raised one hand.
Everyone obeyed.
Lily sobbed.
“Daddy.”
Lorenzo’s voice became gentle.
“Look at me.”
She did.
“Remember when you got lost?”
She nodded through tears.
“What did you do?”
“I found help.”
“That’s right.”
Enzo frowned.
Lorenzo continued.
“And you were very brave.”
Clara understood first.
Lily still had one thing Enzo had ignored.
Her teeth.
Lorenzo said, “Be brave one more time.”
Lily bit Enzo’s hand.
Hard.
He shouted.
His grip loosened.
Lorenzo lunged.
Clara grabbed Lily.
Marco and two guards tackled Enzo before he recovered.
The gun slid across the floor.
Lorenzo hit his uncle once.
Then again.
Marco caught him.
“Boss!”
Lorenzo struggled.
“Let me go.”
“No.”
“He took my child.”
“And she’s watching.”
Those three words stopped him.
Lorenzo looked up.
Lily stood in Clara’s arms.
Terrified.
Watching.
He stepped back.
Enzo laughed from the floor.
“Soft.”
Lorenzo looked at him.
“No.”
He turned toward his daughter.
“Finished.”

That was the first moment Lorenzo Moretti chose Lily over vengeance.
It would not be the last.
