Chapter 6 - THE LAST TRAP

Sarah placed Daniel under protective surveillance.
He argued against it.
“Michael wants the girls. Watching me wastes officers.”
“He believes you are the reason they escaped,” Sarah said. “That makes you a target.”
“I’m armed.”
“So is he.”
Daniel returned to the police station where the story had begun.
The glass doors were unlocked again, but he could still see Emma’s face reflected in them. He remembered her standing between Olivia and an adult she did not yet trust.
At 4:17 p.m., exactly one week after the twins entered the station, the desk phone rang.
Daniel answered.
Michael spoke without greeting.
“You should have opened the door.”
“Where are you?”
“You turned my daughters against me.”
“They came to us.”
“They are children. Children repeat whatever makes adults reward them.”
“Emma carried evidence in her shoe because she believed you would search her pockets.”
Silence.
Daniel continued.
“Rachel left evidence because she knew what you were doing. Olivia survived because Emma was brave enough to run.”
“Rachel was unstable.”
“You drugged her.”
“I treated her.”
“You killed her.”
Michael’s breathing changed.
“Meet me alone.”
“Why?”
“I have information about another child.”
Daniel signaled the communications officer to trace the call.
“What child?”
“One of my patients. A little boy whose parents think he has epilepsy. They are giving him medicine that could stop his heart.”
“Give me the name.”
“Come to the old ferry terminal.”
“You expect me to believe you suddenly care about a patient?”
“I expect you to care.”
The call ended.
The trace identified a disposable phone near the harbor.
Sarah refused to let Daniel go alone.
They created a controlled operation using concealed officers, surveillance teams, and emergency medical support.
The old ferry terminal had been closed for redevelopment. Rusted railings lined the water, and wind moved through broken ticket windows.
Daniel entered wearing a recording device beneath his vest.
No one appeared.
A phone rang on a bench.
Daniel answered.
Michael’s voice came through.
“You brought police.”
“You threatened children and killed your wife.”
“I did not kill Rachel.”
“She had your drugs in her blood.”
“She chose to drive.”
“You put the medicine in her coffee.”
“She was destroying our family.”
The admission was not complete, but it was close.
“Where are you?” Daniel asked.
“Turn around.”
A delivery truck stood across the road.
Michael stepped from behind it holding a gun.
He remained thirty feet away.
Daniel kept his hands visible.
“This ends today.”
“Yes,” Michael said. “It does.”
“You cannot reach Emma and Olivia.”
“They are my daughters.”
“They are evidence to you. That is all they ever were.”
Michael’s face twisted.
“You know nothing about raising a medically complicated child.”
“Olivia wasn’t medically complicated until you made her sick.”
“I gave her purpose. People cared about her.”
“She was seven.”
“She would have had nothing without me.”
“She had a mother.”
“Rachel was weak.”
“She tried to save them.”
“She tried to take what belonged to me.”
The recording device captured every word.
Michael raised the gun.
“Tell me where they moved the girls.”
“I don’t know.”
“You visited them.”
“They were transferred afterward.”
Michael stepped closer.
“You will call Sarah Bennett and tell her you have a new location. You will make them move again, and you will give me the route.”
“No.”
“I can shoot you and disappear.”
“You could.”
Daniel looked past Michael toward the harbor.
“But you would still never find them.”
Michael’s attention flickered.
That was enough.
A tactical officer shouted from behind the truck.
“Drop the weapon!”
Michael turned and fired.
The shot struck metal.
Officers returned fire, hitting him in the shoulder. His weapon fell to the pavement.
Daniel rushed forward, kicked it away, and pressed Michael to the ground while officers secured his hands.
Michael screamed in pain and fury.
“You ruined everything!”
Daniel leaned close enough for him to hear.
“Your daughters ruined nothing. They survived you.”
Paramedics treated Michael beneath armed guard.
The operation should have ended there.
But Sarah’s phone rang before the ambulance left.
It was Hannah.
Emma and Olivia had disappeared.
The protected residence showed no sign of forced entry. The girls had been playing in a fenced courtyard while Hannah spoke with a therapist inside.
A staff member found the gate unlocked.
Security footage showed a woman in a child-services jacket leading them toward a white van.
Evelyn Carter was still in custody.
The woman was someone else.
Michael smiled from the stretcher when he heard the radio traffic.
“You thought I worked alone?”
Sarah grabbed the side rail.
“Who took them?”
Michael closed his eyes.
Daniel searched his pockets before paramedics could object.
Inside Michael’s coat was a second phone.
The screen displayed one unread message.
PACKAGE SECURED. AIRFIELD IN TWENTY.
Daniel remembered the forged passports and the private flight scheduled that evening.
“The Georgetown airfield,” he said.
Police vehicles raced north.
At the airfield, a small charter plane waited with its engine running.
A white van stood beside the hangar.
Officers surrounded the runway.
A woman emerged holding Emma by the arm.
Daniel recognized her from Michael’s charity photographs.
Dr. Rebecca Sloan, his former research partner.
She had helped manage donation funds and signed several false medical reports describing Olivia’s condition.
Olivia sat inside the van, barely conscious.
Rebecca had already drugged her.
“Let Emma go,” Sarah ordered.
Rebecca pulled the girl closer.
“You don’t understand what Michael built. The research, the foundation, the families we helped—none of it survives if the truth comes out.”
“You poisoned a child to protect a charity.”
“We needed documented symptoms.”
Emma suddenly lifted one foot and drove her heel down onto Rebecca’s shoe.
The woman cried out and loosened her grip.
Emma ran.
Daniel reached her as tactical officers pulled Rebecca to the ground.
Sarah opened the van.
Olivia lay across the back seat beside an empty oral syringe.
Paramedics rushed forward.
Daniel held Emma while she screamed her sister’s name.
The flight crew fled from the plane and surrendered.
Rebecca was arrested.
Olivia was transported to the nearest hospital.
Once again, her heart rate was falling.
May you like
Once again, Emma had saved her.
But as the ambulance disappeared down the runway, Daniel could not promise that they had reached her in time.
