Chapter 6 - The Last Harrington Escape

Richard’s grip loosened when he saw the SUV vanish beyond the gates.
I drove my heel down onto his foot and pulled away.
The detectives tackled him before he could reach the library.
The brass letter opener struck the floor.
Eleanor tried to escape through the kitchen, but an officer stopped her beside the service hallway. Margaret remained on the carpet, crying that she had not understood what Richard planned.
I did not stay to hear the excuses.
“Where is Ethan taking Lily?” I demanded.
Richard was pinned facedown with his hands behind his back.
He turned his head toward me.
“You made him panic.”
“You told him to take her.”
“He knows where to go.”
“Where?”
Richard smiled against the floor.
“You think Ethan betrayed me? He’s saving the company.”
A detective pulled me back as officers secured the room.
My phone rang.
Dana.
“I’m tracking the SUV through the company vehicle system,” she said. “They’re heading north.”
“Toward what?”
“There’s a private airfield near Blackwater County.”
The airfield belonged to one of Harrington Logistics’ longtime freight partners. Richard occasionally used it for corporate travel.
“Can they reach a plane?”
“Richard’s company jet is fueled.”
I ran outside.
Ava arrived with Detective Marcus Grant, the district attorney’s investigator. Marcus drove while I sat in the passenger seat following Dana’s tracking map.
Three patrol cars joined us on the highway.
I called Ethan.
He answered after six rings.
“What do you want?” he demanded.
“I want to hear Lily.”
“She’s fine.”
“Put her on the phone.”
“I’m trying to fix this.”
“By taking my daughter to an airfield?”
“Dad told me to get her out.”
“Your father is under arrest.”
Silence.
“What?”
“He threatened me in front of two detectives. Eleanor has been detained. The transfer scheme is exposed.”
“That’s impossible.”
“Ethan, stop the car.”
“I can’t.”
“Why?”
“Because I have the Northstar account codes.”
I looked at Marcus.
He heard Ethan through the speaker.
“What are you planning?” I asked.
“I can move the money before the banks freeze it.”
“You’re still thinking about the money?”
“It’s forty-eight million dollars!”
“It belongs to the company.”
“I can save part of it.”
“For whom?”
He did not answer.
Lily’s voice sounded faintly in the background.
“Mom?”
“I’m here, baby.”
“Ethan said he’s taking me somewhere safe.”
“He needs to stop the car.”
“I can’t stop!” Ethan shouted. “If I stop, Dad blames everything on me.”
“He already did.”
“No.”
“Martin gave me the medical petition. Your name is listed as the sole architect of the transfers.”
Ethan began breathing heavily.
“Dad wouldn’t do that.”
“He already has.”
The SUV’s tracking signal moved toward Blackwater Bridge, the last major crossing before the airfield.
Marcus radioed the patrol cars.
“Prepare a roadblock north of the bridge. Do not pursue aggressively. A child is inside.”
I kept speaking.
“Ethan, Lily has nothing to do with this.”
“I know.”
“Then let her out.”
“I need time.”
“Every minute you keep her in that car adds another crime.”
“I didn’t hurt her.”
“You took her without permission.”
“I rescued her from Dad.”
“Then prove it. Pull over.”
The line went quiet.
For several seconds, I heard only road noise.
Then Lily whispered, “Ethan, there’s a truck.”
Tires screamed through the phone.
The tracking signal stopped.
“Ethan!”
The call disconnected.
My heart slammed against my ribs.
Dana’s voice came through the second phone.
“The vehicle has stopped on Blackwater Bridge.”
We reached the bridge seven minutes later.
The SUV stood sideways near the center span. Its front bumper had struck the concrete railing after swerving around a maintenance truck.
Steam rose from beneath the hood.
Ethan stood outside the vehicle with blood on his forehead.
Lily remained inside.
Police formed a wide perimeter.
Ethan held a gun.
I had never seen him carry one before.
Marcus stopped the car fifty yards away.
“You stay here.”
“He will speak to me.”
“He’s armed.”
“He’s frightened.”
“Frightened people pull triggers.”
I opened the door.
Marcus cursed but followed several steps behind me.
Wind swept across the bridge.
Ethan pointed the gun toward the road, not at Lily.
“Stay back!”
“Let her come to me,” I said.
“I can’t.”
“You can.”
“Police will arrest me.”
“Yes.”
His face twisted.
“You aren’t supposed to say that.”
“I won’t lie to save you from the truth.”
“Dad said you wanted to destroy our family.”
“Your father used Lily as leverage.”
“He said he was protecting the company.”
“The company will survive without stolen money.”
“You don’t know that!”
“I own it, Ethan. I know exactly what it can survive.”
Lily opened the passenger door.
Ethan turned.
“Stay inside!”
She froze.
I kept my voice calm.
“Lily, walk toward me.”
Ethan raised the gun, but not at her.
“Claire, stop.”
“She is not part of your negotiation.”
“I never meant to hurt her.”
“Then don’t.”
He looked at the patrol cars, the damaged SUV, and the company jet visible in the distance beyond the bridge.
His entire life had been built around a promise that the Harrington name would protect him.
Now the name had become the evidence against him.
“I worked for that promotion,” he said.
“You stole for it.”
“I was supposed to inherit everything.”
“Leadership is not an inheritance.”
“My father said the company would be mine.”
“It was never his to give.”
Lily stepped from the SUV.
Ethan did not stop her.
She walked slowly toward me, clutching her stuffed rabbit.
When she reached my arms, I held her so tightly she gasped.
“I’m okay, Mom,” she whispered.
Ethan lowered the gun.
Marcus moved forward.
“Place it on the ground.”
Ethan looked at me.
“Will you tell them I helped her?”
“I will tell them the whole truth.”
“That isn’t what I asked.”
“It is all I can promise.”
He placed the gun on the pavement.
Officers handcuffed him.
As they led him away, he turned toward Lily.
“I’m sorry.”
She buried her face against my shoulder.
The crisis ended on that bridge.
Or so I believed.
By midnight, Richard, Eleanor, Ethan, Judge Halpern, Dr. Klein, and Martin Hale were all in custody or under formal investigation.
Margaret surrendered her temporary custody claim and provided a statement detailing Eleanor’s promises.
The forged resignation was voided.
The board suspended Richard and Ethan.
Lily slept beside me in a protected hotel room with one hand wrapped around my sleeve.
At two in the morning, Dana called.
Her voice sounded broken.
“The money is gone.”
“What do you mean?”
“The accounts were emptied before the banks received the freeze orders.”
“All forty-eight million?”
“Yes.”
“Can it be recovered?”
“I don’t know.”
“What happens to the company?”
Dana was silent for several seconds.
“Payroll is due Friday. Fuel contracts are due Monday. If we cannot replace at least twelve million dollars within seventy-two hours, Harrington Logistics collapses.”
I looked at Lily sleeping peacefully beside me.
Richard had lost control.
Ethan had lost his promotion.
Eleanor had lost her influence.
But they had left thousands of employees standing on the edge of the ruin they created.
May you like
And by morning, everyone would expect me to save them.
