Chapter 7 - The Warehouse on Pier 17

Penny did not tell Sandro.
That was her first mistake.
Her second was believing she could save Eli alone.
She left Jamie sleeping with Rosa, claiming she had forgotten something at the grocery store. Then she drove through the snow toward Pier 17, hands locked around the steering wheel.
The warehouse stood near the frozen edge of Lake Erie, abandoned and half-collapsed.
Inside, the air smelled of rust, gasoline, and old water.
Eli sat tied to a chair beneath a hanging light.
His face was bruised.
“Penny!” he shouted. “Get out of here!”
Marco Bellandi stepped from the shadows.
He was elegant in the way snakes were elegant. Silver hair. Black gloves. A smile that did not reach his eyes.
“Mrs. Fairchild,” he said. “Or is it Ms. Fairchild now?”
Penny’s rage burned through her fear. “Let him go.”
Marco smiled. “You have your husband’s instincts. He also thought honesty was a weapon.”
“What did you do to Owen?”
Marco walked closer.
“Your husband saw invoices he should not have seen. He threatened to expose the operation. So he was removed.”
Penny could not breathe.
“Removed,” she repeated.
Marco’s smile widened.
“The steel support was altered. The accident was inevitable after that.”
Eli made a strangled sound.
Penny’s knees nearly gave out.
Owen’s last morning flashed through her mind: his coffee cooling on the counter, his hand on her stomach, his promise that he would be home by six.
She looked at Marco with tears on her face.
“You murdered him.”
“I solved a problem.”
Before Penny could move, a gunshot cracked through the warehouse.
The light above Eli exploded.
Darkness swallowed the room.
Men shouted.
Penny dropped to the floor as another shot hit a metal beam.
Then a hand caught her arm.
Sandro.
He pulled her behind a stack of crates, shielding her with his body.
“What are you doing here?” he demanded.
“How did you find me?”
“You left your phone on.”
His expression was fury and fear tangled together.
“You came alone?”
“I thought I could help Eli.”
“You could have been killed.”
“And he could have died!”
Sandro looked at her, then softened for one second.
“I know.”
Across the warehouse, Dominic’s voice shouted, “Eli is secured!”
Marco ran toward a side exit.
Sandro moved after him.
Penny grabbed his sleeve.
“Don’t kill him.”
Sandro looked back.
“He killed Owen.”
“I know. But if you kill him, Jamie grows up in a world where revenge decides everything.”
The words hit him.
For a moment, Sandro became completely still.
Then he nodded once.
“Stay here.”
Minutes later, police sirens surrounded the warehouse.
Marco Bellandi was arrested alive.
And Penny, trembling beneath Sandro’s coat, watched Eli get carried into an ambulance.
For the first time in two years, she knew exactly who had taken Owen from her.
But knowing did not bring peace.
May you like
It only opened the door to grief she had never been allowed to feel.
