Chapter 5 - The Truth in the Walls

The investigation moved faster than anyone expected.
Richard Bell’s offices were searched after evidence from Jennifer’s files confirmed years of fraud. Financial records linked him to multiple shell companies, falsified property valuations, and manipulated loans.
But investigators also discovered something Valerie had not expected.
Mark had not simply invested with Richard.
He had helped recruit investors.
Using Valerie’s name.
Without her permission.
Several business associates had been told that Valerie supported the development project. Some invested because they believed she was involved. Others were promised that her company would provide consulting support.
Valerie was horrified.
Mark had used her reputation as collateral.
He had built his lies on the trust she had earned.
When David told her, Valerie sat in silence for nearly a minute.
Then she said, “We need to contact every person who was misled.”
“That could become public,” David warned.
“Then it becomes public.”
“You may face questions.”
“I would rather face questions than hide while others lose their money.”
Within days, Valerie’s company released a statement confirming that she had not authorized any investment arrangement with Richard Bell, Mark, or M&K Property Solutions. She also created a legal support fund for small investors affected by the scheme.
The story spread quickly.
Local news stations covered the fraud investigation. Business groups praised Valerie for cooperating openly. Some people accused her of trying to save her own image, but most understood the truth.
She had been deceived too.
Mark called again.
This time, he sounded broken.
“They’re saying I could go to jail.”
“You should speak to your attorney.”
“Valerie, please. Tell them you knew about the investment.”
“I didn’t.”
“Tell them you approved it.”
“I didn’t.”
“I’m Noah’s father.”
“And you used Noah’s college savings as part of your plan.”
Mark fell silent.
Valerie had found the transfer the night before.
Twenty-five thousand dollars taken from Noah’s education account and routed through M&K Property Solutions.
She could forgive many things.
But not that.
Not the money itself.
The betrayal.
The willingness to gamble with his own son’s future.
Eleanor, meanwhile, attempted to blame Valerie publicly.
She gave an interview to a small online channel, calling Valerie “an ungrateful wife who abandoned her family for money.”
But the story changed when the reporter asked why Rose had been cooking while visibly ill.
Eleanor tried to dismiss it.
“She likes helping.”
Then video footage surfaced.
One of the neighbors had recorded Eleanor shouting at Rose through an open kitchen window.
The clip spread online.
Public sympathy disappeared overnight.
Eleanor stopped speaking to reporters.
Rose watched the video once.
Then she turned it off.
“I don’t want revenge,” she said quietly.
Valerie sat beside her.
“I know.”
“I just want peace.”
“You deserve it.”
Rose nodded.
“And so do you.”
A month later, Richard Bell was charged with multiple counts of fraud, conspiracy, and financial theft. Mark faced charges for financial fraud, forgery, and misuse of funds. Eleanor was investigated for her role in hiding assets and assisting with transactions.
Valerie attended the first court hearing only because she needed closure.
Mark looked smaller than she remembered.
He did not look powerful.
He did not look like the man who had once stood in their hallway and ordered her to apologize.
He looked frightened.
When the judge asked if he understood the charges, Mark answered, “Yes, Your Honor.”
For the first time in years, Valerie believed he did.
He understood that money could not protect him.
His mother could not protect him.
His lies could not protect him.
And Valerie would never protect him again.
That night, Noah climbed into Valerie’s bed after a nightmare.
“Mommy,” he whispered, “are we safe in the big house?”
Valerie held him close.
“Yes, baby.”
“Forever?”
She kissed his hair.
“Forever is a big word.”
Noah looked worried.
“So… are we safe tomorrow?”
Valerie smiled through tears.
May you like
“Yes,” she said. “Tomorrow too.”
