Chapter 6 - HIS BROTHER’S LAST VOICEMAIL

Federal technicians recovered Lucas’s voicemail on the twelfth day.

Not from Adrian’s servers.

From a telecommunications archive obtained through subpoena.

Adrian sat alone when Daniel brought it.

“You sure?”

Adrian nodded.

Daniel placed headphones over Adrian’s ears.

The left side was connected to a specialized amplifier recommended by Dr. Shah.

Adrian had recovered fragments of sound.

Doors closing.

Water running.

Certain low voices.

Nothing reliable.

He could understand almost no speech without reading lips.

But he wanted to hear Lucas with whatever remained.

Daniel started the recording.

Static.

Then a distant voice.

Broken.

Warped.

Adrian’s heart stopped.

Lucas.

He couldn’t understand.

Daniel placed a live transcript on the screen.

The audio played while words appeared.

“Adrian, listen to me. Don’t go through the south entrance tonight.”

Adrian gripped the chair.

“I know who is moving the money.”

Static.

“Malcolm.”

Then:

“Claire knows.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

Lucas continued.

“Warren is part of it. I found medical purchases tied to your name. Adrian, they’re planning something with you.”

His breathing sounded fast.

“I think they expect you to survive tonight.”

Adrian opened his eyes.

Daniel looked shocked.

Lucas continued:

“The bomb isn’t meant to kill you.”

Static swallowed several words.

Then:

“They need you alive and damaged.”

Adrian went completely still.

Alive and damaged.

His deafness had not been collateral.

It was the objective.

Lucas continued.

“If I’m wrong, you can punch me tomorrow.”

A tiny laugh.

Adrian heard it.

Barely.

He broke.

His brother’s laugh.

After three years of nothing.

A tiny ghost of sound traveling through damaged nerves.

Lucas’s final words appeared.

“If I’m right, trust Daniel.”

Daniel looked away.

“And Adrian?”

Static.

Then:

“Don’t become a prison just because somebody locks a door.”

The message ended.

Adrian sat still for a long time.

Daniel wiped his face.

“He knew.”

Adrian nodded.

“He tried to save you.”

Another nod.

Daniel placed a hand on his shoulder.

Then the house alarm flashed.

Not sounded.

Flashed.

Red emergency lights.

Daniel’s head snapped toward the door.

His phone vibrated.

Fire alarm.

Staff wing.

Adrian stood.

Smoke rolled into the hallway.

“Hannah.”

He ran.

Daniel followed.

The staff wing was already filling with smoke.

Security shouted.

Adrian heard almost none of it.

People moved toward exits.

Adrian pushed through.

Hannah’s room.

Empty.

Lily’s blanket on the floor.

“HANNAH!”

His own voice echoed strangely inside his head.

No answer he could understand.

A guard grabbed him.

Adrian shoved him away.

Then—

Something.

Faint.

Rhythmic.

Three knocks.

Pause.

Three knocks.

Adrian froze.

Again.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

He turned toward the laundry storage room.

The door was closed.

He ran.

Locked.

Adrian kicked once.

Twice.

Wood split.

Inside, Hannah lay beside the wall with Lily in her arms.

Smoke filled the room.

Someone had jammed a metal cart against the outside door.

Not accident.

Hannah looked up.

Adrian lifted Lily.

The child coughed violently.

He carried her out.

Hannah followed with Daniel supporting her.

They reached the courtyard.

Fresh winter air.

Paramedics.

Lily clung to Adrian’s coat.

Her face was gray with smoke.

Adrian touched her hair.

Then noticed her hand moving.

YOU HEARD.

He stared.

She pointed toward the building.

KNOCK.

YOU HEARD.

Adrian’s eyes filled.

Yes.

He had.

Not clearly.

Not normally.

But enough.

Enough to find her.

He signed:

YOU SAVED ME FIRST.

Then:

MY TURN.

Hannah was receiving oxygen nearby.

She looked at him.

“Was that fire deliberate?”

Adrian nodded.

Daniel approached with a security tablet.

“Camera footage.”

Adrian read his lips imperfectly.

Daniel showed him.

At 9:14 p.m., Dr. Warren entered through a medical-service door using an old access code.

At 9:22, he left.

At 9:28, smoke began.

A second camera showed Warren pushing the laundry cart against the storage-room door.

Hannah stared.

“He tried to kill us.”

Adrian’s face became something cold and dangerous.

Yes.

Now there would be no pretending Warren was merely a corrupt doctor.

Federal agents arrested him forty minutes later at a private airfield.

He had a passport.

Cash.

Two phones.

And a message from Claire.

Did you solve the child problem?

Hannah read it.

Then looked at Adrian.

Claire.

His fiancée.

The woman scheduled to marry him in three weeks.

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

Daniel said, “We arrest her tonight.”

Adrian shook his head.

Hannah stared.

“Why?”

Adrian typed:

WARREN WILL TALK.

Daniel nodded slowly.

Adrian continued.

BUT MALCOLM WILL RUN THE SECOND CLAIRE IS ARRESTED.

Hannah understood.

“You still want the wedding.”

Adrian looked toward Lily receiving oxygen.

Not a wedding.

A stage.

May you like

And this time every person who believed his deafness made him easy to control would be sitting in the front row.
