Chapter 4 - The Man Who Stayed Silent

The surgery was scheduled for the following morning.

No one outside Adrian’s inner circle knew.

Not Claire.

Not the Sutton family.

Not even most of his own security team.

Dr. Lin wanted secrecy until she knew what had been placed inside Adrian’s ear. Adrian wanted secrecy because he no longer trusted the people around him.

That night, he set a trap.

Daniel was told that Adrian would be traveling to a private facility in Connecticut at dawn.

Claire was told that Adrian would be returning to Manhattan for a meeting with a rival family.

Both stories were false.

At 11:40 p.m., Daniel received a message.

Adrian watched from the darkened security room as the words appeared on Daniel’s phone through a mirrored screen.

He is going to Connecticut. Tomorrow is the last chance.

The message came from Claire.

Adrian did not need to hear the sound of his own breathing to know it had changed.

Daniel stared at the phone for a long time.

Then typed back.

I won’t do this again.

Claire’s reply came less than thirty seconds later.

You already did. You don’t get to grow a conscience now.

Daniel closed his eyes.

In the security room, Adrian stood completely still.

Then Daniel made the mistake that finally destroyed him.

He called Claire.

The phone speaker was useless to Adrian, but the live transcription software Dr. Lin had installed on the monitor filled the screen with text.

Claire’s voice appeared in cold white letters.

“You were supposed to make sure Warren kept him controlled.”

Daniel’s reply followed.

“I thought it was temporary. You said he would recover.”

“He recovered enough. He survived. That’s all that matters.”

Daniel’s fingers curled around the phone.

“Luca wasn’t supposed to die.”

The room seemed to collapse around Adrian.

Luca.

His brother.

Not supposed to die.

Claire’s next words appeared slowly.

“Luca was reckless. He was going to expose everything. The explosion solved a problem.”

Adrian did not move.

He could not.

The screen blurred for a moment, and he realized his eyes had filled with tears.

For three years, he had mourned Luca as a victim of an enemy attack.

Now he knew Luca had been murdered by people sitting at his dinner table.

Claire continued.

“You were always the easier brother to manage, Adrian. Even before the accident. You just needed to be isolated.”

Daniel whispered something that the transcription struggled to catch.

Then one clear line appeared.

“He trusted us.”

Claire answered without hesitation.

“That was his weakness.”

Adrian turned away from the screen.

His hands were clenched so hard that blood appeared in his palm where his nails cut into skin.

The old Adrian would have stormed into the room.

He would have dragged Daniel and Claire into the open and let rage decide what happened next.

But three years of silence had taught him patience.

And patience, he knew, could be far more terrifying than anger.

He signed to the security chief.

Do not arrest Daniel yet. Follow him. Record everything.

The security chief nodded.

At 4:30 in the morning, Adrian arrived at Dr. Lin’s clinic under a false name.

The procedure lasted nearly two hours.

When he woke, the first thing he saw was Dr. Lin standing over him.

She held a small metal object inside a clear evidence container.

It was no bigger than a fingernail.

A tiny medical-grade device, coated with residue from the same toxic compound found in Warren’s bottle.

It had been placed deep enough to avoid casual inspection.

Close enough to slowly damage tissue.

Dr. Lin explained that it was designed to release controlled amounts of the chemical over time.

Adrian looked at it for a long while.

Three years of silence.

Reduced to a piece of metal smaller than a coin.

Then Dr. Lin leaned closer.

“We may be able to restore some hearing,” she said.

Adrian searched her face.

“How much?” Daniel typed for him from a message Dr. Lin had prepared.

“I don’t know,” she replied. “But there is a chance.”

A chance.

It was more than he had been given in three years.

Outside the clinic, Hannah sat with Lily in the waiting room.

Lily had refused to stay at the estate.

When Adrian emerged, pale and exhausted, she ran toward him.

She stopped just before reaching him, as if afraid she might hurt him.

Adrian lowered himself carefully to one knee.

Lily touched the bandage near his ear.

“Better?” she asked.

Adrian could not hear her.

Not yet.

But he read her lips.

He smiled and signed.

Maybe.

Lily considered that word.

Then she took his hand.

Maybe is good.

Behind them, Daniel stood near the elevator, watched by two security men.

He looked broken.

Adrian met his eyes.

Daniel lifted both hands in surrender.

Then he typed a message on his phone and held it out.

I will tell you everything.

Adrian read it.

His face remained expressionless.

May you like

But inside, the storm had only begun.
