Chapter 4 - THE FIANCÉE WHO SPOKE WHEN HIS BACK WAS TURNED

Claire arrived at seven wearing red.
Adrian noticed because Lily had once informed him, with absolute seriousness, that Claire wore red when she wanted everyone to look at her.
Adrian had thought it childish.
Now he wondered how many things Lily had understood before he did.
Claire kissed him.
“Better day?”
Adrian shrugged.
She poured herself wine.
Then poured his.
Adrian watched carefully.
No powder.
No drops.
Nothing obvious.
But after three years of deception, obvious no longer meant safe.
He lifted the glass.
Touched it to his lips.
Did not drink.
Claire smiled.
“Wedding planner wants final confirmation on the orchestra.”
Adrian read her lips.
He typed:
WHATEVER YOU WANT.
She laughed.
“That is why I’m marrying you.”
A joke.
Maybe.
They ate.
Halfway through dinner Adrian intentionally turned toward the windows.
Claire spoke.
Normal volume.
Not exaggerated.
Not positioned for lip-reading.
“Adrian?”
He gave no reaction.
She waited.
Then said something else.
“You really can’t hear me.”
Adrian felt ice move through his veins.
He remained still.
Claire whispered:
“Good.”
Adrian almost turned.
Almost.
Instead, he lifted his water.
Across the room, Daniel watched from a service doorway.
He had seen her lips too.
Claire leaned back.
When Adrian faced her again, she smiled warmly.
He smiled back.
For the rest of dinner, he wondered how many times she had spoken behind him over three years.
Testing.
Mocking.
Confirming.
After she left, Adrian went directly to the guest cottage.
Hannah opened the door.
She looked surprised.
“Mr. Vale.”
Lily came running.
She signed:
EAR?
Adrian crouched.
He answered:
DOCTOR HELPING.
Lily considered.
Then:
GOOD DOCTOR?
Adrian smiled.
YES.
Hannah waited until Lily returned to her blocks.
Then she stepped outside with Adrian.
Cold wind moved through the trees.
“You’re frightening me.”
Adrian looked at her.
She continued.
“Not intentionally. But security moved us. Daniel keeps asking where Lily was during Dr. Warren’s visits. Nobody will tell me what they found.”
Adrian typed.
THE THING IN MY EAR CONTAINED MEDICATION THAT MAY HAVE DAMAGED MY HEARING.
Hannah read.
Her face drained.
“What?”
Adrian continued.
WARREN’S DROPS CONTAINED IT TOO.
She covered her mouth.
“For how long?”
THREE YEARS.
Hannah looked toward the cottage.
“And Lily saw him changing the bottles.”
Adrian nodded.
Hannah immediately said, “We’re leaving.”
NO.
She stiffened.
He realized how the word looked.
Command.
Mafia boss.
Employer.
A man used to obedience.
He deleted it and typed again.
PLEASE DON’T LEAVE UNTIL I CAN MAKE SURE YOU’RE SAFE.
Hannah read.
“Are we in danger?”
POSSIBLY.
“Because Lily saw something?”
YES.
Hannah looked furious.
“She is four.”
I KNOW.
“She cannot become part of whatever your world is.”
Adrian’s expression changed.
MY WORLD DID NOT ASK HER PERMISSION BEFORE IT REACHED HER.
Hannah stared at him.
He continued.
THAT IS WHY I AM TRYING TO PROTECT HER.
Hannah’s anger softened, but did not disappear.
“Then tell me everything.”
So he did.
Warren.
The polymer inserts.
The drugs.
Lucas’s email.
Malcolm Sutton.
Claire.
The wedding.
By the end, Hannah sat on the porch step.
“Your fiancée?”
Adrian nodded.
“You’re still pretending to marry her?”
FOR NOW.
“That sounds incredibly dangerous.”
IT IS.
“Then why?”
Adrian looked toward the window.
Lily sat inside building a crooked tower.
He typed:
BECAUSE IF I CONFRONT THEM NOW, THEY DESTROY WHAT WE HAVEN’T FOUND.
Hannah read slowly.
“Lucas’s records.”
YES.
“Do you know where they are?”
NO.
She thought.
“What did his email say?”
Adrian showed her.
Hannah read the line again.
I have the full records somewhere safer.
Then she asked, “What did your brother do for fun?”
Adrian frowned.
Not the question he expected.
He typed:
MOTORCYCLES. BOXING. TERRIBLE POKER.
“Anywhere he went alone?”
Adrian thought.
Then remembered.
A storage garage in Brooklyn.
Lucas restored old motorcycles there.
Nobody in the organization used it because Lucas hated having guards around when he worked.
Adrian stood.
Hannah raised an eyebrow.
“That helped?”
He nodded.
Twenty minutes later, Daniel had the address.
They went after midnight.
The garage smelled like rust and gasoline.
Lucas’s motorcycle still sat beneath a tarp.
Adrian froze when he saw it.
Three years.
Daniel stayed near the door.
Adrian searched.
Cabinets.
Toolboxes.
Shelves.
Nothing.
Then Hannah’s question returned.
Somewhere safer.
Lucas never trusted digital systems.
He trusted mechanical things.
Adrian approached the motorcycle.
He removed the leather seat.
Underneath was a small welded compartment.
Inside:
A flash drive.
A recorder.
A paper ledger.
And an envelope addressed to Adrian.
Daniel whispered, “He really did hide it here.”
Adrian opened the envelope.
One line.
If you’re reading this, you were too stubborn to die.
Adrian almost laughed.
Almost cried.
Then the garage lights went out.
Daniel immediately drew his weapon.
Adrian saw movement reflected in the window.
Two men entered through the rear door.
Daniel shouted something Adrian couldn’t hear.
The first man raised a gun.
Adrian moved.
Years of silence had trained him to watch bodies before weapons.
Shoulder.
Elbow.
Weight shift.
He slammed the man into a workbench.
Daniel fired at the second man’s leg.
The man fell.
Adrian pinned the first against the floor.
Then he noticed the tattoo beneath the attacker’s sleeve.
A black crown.
Sutton security.
Police were not called immediately.
Adrian’s world had its own methods for containing danger.
But this time he did something different.
He called a federal contact Lucas had once trusted.
The evidence left Adrian’s hands before sunrise.
The flash drive contained payment ledgers.
Shell companies.
Fake Vale authorizations.
Hundreds of millions moved through construction contracts.
And one video file.
Lucas sitting inside the garage.
Recorded two days before his death.
He looked directly at the camera.
“If Adrian sees this, something went wrong.”
Adrian sat motionless.
Lucas continued.
“Malcolm Sutton is stealing from us.”
Then:
“Dr. Warren is helping him.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
And finally:
“Claire knows more than she pretends.”
The video skipped.
Static.
Then Lucas leaned closer.
“There’s one thing I haven’t figured out.”
Adrian waited.
“Why Warren ordered the ototoxic medication six weeks before the explosion.”
The room went completely still.
Daniel looked at Adrian.
Six weeks before.
Before there was any hearing injury to treat.
Before the bomb.
Before Adrian had supposedly needed those drops.
The medication had been prepared before he was hurt.
Meaning the explosion had never simply created an opportunity.
May you like
His deafness had been planned before the explosion happened.
