Chapter 6 - The House at Blackwater Lake

Dante wanted to drive to the lake house immediately.

Grant stopped him.

“That is exactly what Lorenzo expects.”

“He has my daughter.”

“And he wants you angry enough to walk into another trap.”

Dante’s eyes were almost black with rage.

“You are wasting time.”

“No,” Mara said. “Ava is buying us time.”

Both men looked at her.

She held the pink paper flower.

“She wrote that she dropped it like I told her. That means she is thinking clearly. She knows we are looking for her.”

Dante’s expression softened for only a second.

“She must be terrified.”

“She is. But she also trusts you to find her.”

Mara placed Thomas’s brass key beside the note.

“Lorenzo needs this key. If he only wanted to kill Ava, he would not have told us to bring it.”

“The locker at Union Station,” Grant said.

“Whatever my father hid there is dangerous enough that Lorenzo is willing to expose himself.”

Dante looked toward the door.

“Then we go to Union Station first.”

Locker 317 stood at the far end of an old baggage corridor beneath the station’s main hall. Grant’s team cleared the area while Mara inserted the brass key.

For one terrifying moment, it would not turn.

Then she pushed harder.

The lock opened.

Inside was a metal document case, a cassette recorder, and a sealed envelope addressed to Dante Moretti.

Dante opened the case.

It contained financial ledgers, photographs, bank-transfer records, and copies of legal documents bearing Lorenzo’s signature. The transactions dated back more than fifteen years.

Millions had been stolen from Moretti charities.

More importantly, there were maintenance records for Elena’s car.

One page showed an unauthorized brake-system modification two days before her death. The work order had been approved by a company controlled by Lorenzo.

Mara pressed the play button on the recorder.

Static filled the corridor.

Then her father’s voice emerged.

“My name is Thomas Ellis. If this recording is being heard, I was unable to deliver the evidence personally.”

Mara covered her mouth.

She had forgotten the exact sound of his voice.

Now it reached across twelve years as though he were standing beside her.

“Lorenzo Vale has created a private network inside the Moretti organization. He intends to remove Elena Moretti because she discovered his theft. I warned her not to travel, but she believes Dante can protect her once he sees the records.”

Dante lowered his head.

“I should have known,” he whispered.

The recording continued.

“Lorenzo has threatened my wife and daughter. I have arranged for Evelyn and Mara to believe I died in a highway accident. It is the only way to make them stop searching for my family.”

Mara’s heart stopped.

She grabbed the recorder.

“My father survived.”

Thomas’s voice crackled again.

“I am leaving Chicago under another identity. Once Elena is safe and Lorenzo is exposed, I will return. If Elena dies, Dante must know the accident was planned.”

The recording ended.

Mara stared at the device.

Her father had not died when she was sixteen.

He had disappeared to protect her.

Whether he had survived afterward remained unknown.

Grant lifted a photograph from the case.

It showed Lorenzo standing beside the old Moretti lake house with Silas Ward and three men Mara did not recognize.

A date had been printed in the corner.

Three weeks earlier.

“He has been preparing the property,” Grant said.

Dante picked up the envelope addressed to him.

Inside was a letter from Elena.

Dante,

Thomas is telling the truth. Lorenzo has been stealing from our family for years. I was afraid to accuse him without proof because your father trusted him more than anyone. If something happens to me, protect Ava from every document Lorenzo ever prepared.

Do not let grief turn you into the man your enemies believe you are.

Our daughter will need your heart more than she needs your revenge.

Elena

Dante read the letter twice.

Then he folded it carefully and placed it inside his jacket.

“We bring the evidence,” he said.

Grant shook his head. “Copies.”

“All of it.”

“If Lorenzo sees copies, he may panic.”

“That is the point.”

They formed a plan.

Dante and Mara would approach the lake house in his SUV. Grant’s team would enter the surrounding woods from the north. A second team would secure the private dock.

Mara wore a small recording device beneath her sweater. Dante carried no visible weapon.

As they drove beyond the city, the buildings disappeared and the road narrowed between dense trees.

Blackwater Lake came into view beneath a gray afternoon sky.

The Moretti lake house had once been elegant. Now its stone walls were dark with age, and vines covered the southern windows.

Dante stopped the SUV near the front steps.

Mara carried the metal document case.

The front door opened.

Silas Ward stood inside.

“Phones,” he ordered.

Dante placed his phone on the ground.

Mara did the same.

Silas searched them, removed the recording device from beneath Mara’s sweater, and crushed it under his shoe.

Lorenzo’s voice came from the upper landing.

“You always did underestimate the people who served you, Dante.”

He descended slowly, immaculate in a charcoal suit.

Ava stood beside him.

Her wrists were tied loosely in front of her, but she appeared unharmed. Her pink birthday dress had been replaced with an oversized gray coat.

“Daddy!”

She tried to run.

Lorenzo caught her shoulder.

Dante took one step forward.

Silas raised a pistol.

“Stop.”

Dante froze.

Mara met Ava’s eyes and gave the smallest possible nod.

The child’s lower lip trembled, but she remained quiet.

“You wanted the key,” Mara said. “We used it.”

Lorenzo looked at the case.

“You opened the locker.”

“Yes.”

“Where are the original records?”

“Inside.”

“Bring them.”

Mara approached the long dining table and placed the case on its surface.

Lorenzo opened it.

For the first time, his composure cracked.

He flipped through the ledgers and photographs.

“Thomas should have destroyed these.”

“My father knew what you did,” Mara said.

“Your father was an idealistic fool.”

“Did you kill him?”

Lorenzo glanced at her.

“No. He ran. I allowed him to believe his sacrifice mattered.”

“Where is he?”

“I have no idea. He vanished after Elena’s accident.”

Dante’s voice dropped.

“You murdered my wife.”

Lorenzo smiled faintly.

“Elena murdered herself with righteousness. She believed love made her untouchable.”

“You altered her brakes.”

“I arranged an outcome.”

“And tonight you drugged my child.”

“I arranged an opportunity. Caleb lacked the courage to complete it properly.”

Ava looked up at him.

“You’re a bad man.”

Lorenzo’s smile disappeared.

Dante’s entire body tightened.

“Do not speak to her.”

Lorenzo ignored him.

“You were supposed to sleep through all of this, Ava.”

“Mara told Daddy about the glass.”

Lorenzo looked at Mara with open contempt.

“The waitress.”

“The woman you failed to notice,” Mara replied.

His gaze sharpened.

“People like you survive by remaining invisible.”

“That is why I saw everything.”

A faint sound came from above them.

Three soft knocks.

Ava tapped her shoe against the wooden floor.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

She was signaling.

Mara looked toward the large windows overlooking the lake.

A pink flower was wedged beneath the frame.

Ava had left a trail through the house.

Grant’s team knew which room they occupied.

Lorenzo pulled a folder from his coat.

“Sign these documents, Dante.”

“What are they?”

“A transfer of voting authority and a confession accepting responsibility for financial crimes committed through your companies.”

“And then?”

“You and Mara leave.”

“With Ava.”

“Eventually.”

Dante laughed quietly.

“You planned my wife’s death, poisoned my daughter, and expect me to trust your promise?”

“No. I expect you to fear what happens if you refuse.”

Lorenzo placed a hand on Ava’s shoulder.

Dante reached for the pen.

Mara saw what he intended.

He was not surrendering.

He was moving closer.

Silas saw it too.

“Stay where you are.”

The first window shattered.

Grant’s team entered through three directions.

Silas spun toward the sound.

Dante lunged across the table.

Mara grabbed Ava and pulled her beneath it as a gunshot exploded through the room.

Wood splintered above them.

“Close your eyes,” Mara told Ava.

Dante struck Silas and drove him into the wall.

Grant entered through the shattered window.

Lorenzo seized the document case and ran toward the rear doors.

“Grant!” Dante shouted.

Grant pursued him.

Mara crawled from beneath the table with Ava wrapped in her arms.

“Daddy!”

Dante turned toward them.

Another gunshot cracked from the staircase.

Silas, bleeding from the mouth, had recovered his weapon.

He aimed at Mara.

Dante stepped in front of her.

The bullet struck him high in the chest.

He fell.

Ava screamed.

Grant’s men subdued Silas, but Mara barely saw them.

She dropped beside Dante and pressed both hands against the spreading blood.

“Stay with me.”

Dante tried to breathe.

His eyes found Ava.

“Is she safe?”

“Yes.”

“Promise.”

“I promise.”

Ava knelt beside him, sobbing.

“Daddy, wake up.”

Dante lifted one shaking hand and touched her cheek.

Then his eyes closed.

Outside, an engine roared to life.

May you like

Lorenzo’s speedboat pulled away from the private dock, carrying the original evidence across Blackwater Lake.

And Dante Moretti stopped breathing beneath Mara’s hands.
