Chapter 5 - HE CAME FOR MIA’S MOTHER

Elena heard glass break in the library.
She knew immediately.
Normal houses made normal sounds.
Pipes.
Doors.
Children dropping toys.
The Moretti mansion had taught her the difference between those sounds and the ones that mattered.
The crash downstairs mattered.
She lifted Mia.
“Mommy?”
“We’re playing a game.”
Mia looked suspicious.
Elena carried her toward Sophia’s nursery.
“What game?”
“Quiet mouse.”
“I like bunny.”
“Tonight you’re a mouse.”
She found the nanny holding Sophia.
“Safe room.”
The woman’s face changed.
“What?”
“Now.”
They entered the nursery.
Elena locked the door.
Then pushed the dresser in front of it.
Mia stared.
“This is not game.”
Elena crouched.
“No.”
Her daughter’s lower lip trembled.
“Bad man?”
Elena did not lie.
“Yes.”
“Daddy?”
The word hurt.
“I don’t know.”
Mia hugged Mabel’s absence against her chest before remembering she had given the rabbit to Alessandro.
“Mabel’s with tall man.”
“He’ll bring her back.”
“Promise?”
Elena swallowed.
“Promise.”
Footsteps sounded in the hallway.
The nanny covered her mouth.
Elena pressed the silver star inside the wardrobe.
The hidden compartment opened.
“Take the girls.”
“What about you?”
“Take them.”
“Elena—”
“If they find this room, someone needs to pull them away.”
The nanny stared at her.
“That’s insane.”
“It’s motherhood.”
She pushed them inside.
Mia grabbed her shirt.
“No.”
“Baby.”
“No!”
“I need you to protect Sophia.”
Mia’s face crumpled.
“But who protects you?”
The question nearly destroyed her.
Elena kissed her forehead.
“I protect me.”
She closed the panel.
Then crossed the nursery.
The door handle moved.
Once.
Twice.
A male voice.
“Elena.”
Her blood froze.
Daniel.
“Elena, open the door.”
She backed away.
“I know you’re in there.”
Another voice spoke outside.
“Get it open.”
Not Daniel.
A stranger.
Elena looked around.
No weapon.
A lamp.
A wooden rocking chair.
A ceramic music box.
She picked up the lamp.
The door slammed inward.
Daniel entered.
Two years had changed him.
Thicker beard.
More weight.
Same eyes.
Eyes that always looked most alive when someone else was frightened.
“There you are.”
Elena raised the lamp.
“Don’t come closer.”
He smiled.
“You’re going to hit me?”
“Yes.”
His smile faltered.
That was new.
The old Elena would have apologized for threatening him.
This Elena had spent two years learning that surviving him had not been luck.
Daniel stepped forward.
She swung.
The lamp struck his shoulder.
He cursed.
Elena ran.
She made it into the hallway.
A second man grabbed her.
She drove her heel into his foot.
He loosened his grip.
She bit his hand.
Hard.
He shouted.
Daniel caught her from behind.
“You crazy—”
Elena slammed the back of her head into his nose.
He released her.
Blood poured down his face.
She ran toward the stairs.
A third man appeared below.
Elena stopped.
Trapped.
Daniel wiped his nose.
“You always make everything harder.”
“You broke into my home.”
He laughed.
“Your home?”
Elena’s eyes hardened.
“Yes.”
Something about that answer angered him.
“You clean toilets here.”
“And you still had to bring three men to face me.”
The third man started upstairs.
Elena backed toward the balcony railing.
Daniel approached slowly.
“Where’s Mia?”
“Safe.”
“She’s my daughter.”
“She’s terrified of you.”
“I never touched her.”
“You made her watch you touch me.”
Silence.
Daniel’s face changed.
“Where is she?”
“No.”
His voice lowered.
“Luca said the kid knows something.”
Elena caught it.
“What?”
Daniel realized too late.
“What does Mia know?”
“Nothing.”
“Then why are you here?”
Daniel looked away.
Elena understood.
“This isn’t about custody.”
He said nothing.
“Luca sent you because he thinks Mia remembers Isabella.”
The third man reached the top stair.
Daniel smiled.
“Smart girl.”
Elena’s stomach tightened.
“What does she remember?”
“You tell me.”
“I don’t know.”
“That’s a problem.”
The man grabbed Elena’s arm.
She fought.
Daniel moved closer.
“Where did Isabella take you?”
“Go to hell.”
He slapped her.
Her head snapped sideways.
For one second, everything inside her became very quiet.
Then she looked back at him.
Daniel expected fear.
He found none.
“You shouldn’t have done that.”
He laughed.
“What are you going to do?”
A voice came from downstairs.
“She doesn’t have to do anything.”
Every person froze.
Alessandro stood in the foyer.
Richard and four armed security men spread behind him.
Mabel hung from Alessandro’s left hand.
Daniel went pale.
The man holding Elena tightened his grip.
Alessandro’s eyes dropped to his hand.
“Take your hand off her.”
The man hesitated.
“I said—”
Daniel shouted, “Don’t!”
The stranger dragged Elena backward and pressed something cold against her neck.
A knife.
Alessandro stopped.
His face became unreadable.
Daniel smiled despite the blood on his nose.
“There.”
He breathed heavily.
“Now we talk.”
Alessandro looked at Elena.
“Are you hurt?”
“I’m fine.”
Daniel laughed.
“She was always good at saying that.”
Alessandro’s eyes moved to him.
“I know.”
Something passed between Alessandro and Elena.
Not a plan.
Trust.
Daniel held out his hand.
“The kid.”
“No,” Alessandro said.
“Then Elena leaves with us.”
“No.”
“You don’t control this.”
Alessandro slowly set Mabel on the foyer table.
“You came into my house.”
Daniel’s smile flickered.
“You assaulted a woman under my protection.”
“I’m her husband.”
“That sentence has never made assault legal.”
“You calling police now?”
Daniel sneered.
“The great Alessandro Moretti?”
“Yes.”
Daniel blinked.
It was not the answer he expected.
Sirens became audible outside.
Daniel looked toward the windows.
“You called cops?”
Alessandro’s voice remained calm.
“I called everyone.”
The man holding Elena shifted.
That was all she needed.
Elena stomped his foot.
Then threw her weight sideways.
The knife cut a shallow line across her shoulder but missed her throat.
Richard’s men surged forward.
Daniel ran.
Alessandro intercepted him at the bottom of the stairs.
Daniel swung.
Alessandro blocked the punch.
Then hit him once.
Hard.
Daniel fell.
Alessandro stood over him.
For one terrible second, Elena thought he might keep going.
She had seen men like Alessandro before.
Men whose anger became an excuse.
But Alessandro stepped back.
“Handcuff him.”
Richard looked almost surprised.
Police entered seconds later.
Daniel screamed as officers restrained him.
“You think she’s yours now?”
Alessandro did not answer.
Daniel looked at Elena.
“You’ll come back.”
“No.”
“You always come back.”
Elena walked toward him.
For years, those words had lived somewhere inside her.
A threat disguised as certainty.
She crouched until they were eye level.
“I came back before because you convinced me there was nowhere else to go.”
Daniel smiled bitterly.
“And now you have a billionaire?”
“No.”
Elena looked around the damaged foyer.
“Now I have myself.”
His smile disappeared.
Police dragged him away.
Alessandro turned toward her.
Blood stained the shoulder of her shirt.
His face tightened.
“You’re hurt.”
“It’s shallow.”
He stepped closer.
Then stopped.
“May I?”
Elena understood.
He was asking permission to touch her.
Her throat tightened.
“Yes.”
He gently examined the cut.
His hands were careful.
Nothing like Daniel’s.
“You need stitches.”
“Probably.”
Then she remembered.
“The girls.”
They ran upstairs.
Mia burst from the hidden compartment when Elena opened it.
“Mommy!”
Elena caught her.
Sophia crawled behind.
Alessandro lifted his daughter.
Mia immediately looked at him.
“Mabel?”
Alessandro stared.
After armed men, knives, police, and betrayal, the child had one priority.
He reached into his coat.
Mabel emerged.
Mia gasped.
“You put her in your jacket!”
“She was cold.”
Mia hugged the rabbit.
Then she looked at Alessandro’s face.
“Your brave worked.”
Alessandro’s expression softened.
“Yes.”
Mia handed Mabel back.
He frowned.
“What?”
“You still need some.”
Elena looked away quickly because suddenly she was crying.
Hours later, while police processed the house, Richard entered the medical room.
“We found Daniel’s phone.”
Alessandro looked up.
“And?”
“He has messages from Luca.”
“Enough to connect them?”
“Yes.”
“Isabella?”
Richard hesitated.
“There’s one message from eleven months ago.”
Alessandro stood.
“What does it say?”
Richard handed him the phone.
A message from Luca to Daniel.
SHE TOOK THE LAKE ROAD. HANDLE IT BEFORE SHE REACHES HIM.
Alessandro stared.
Eleven months ago.
The night Isabella died.
His hand tightened around the phone.
Elena saw grief become certainty.
May you like
Isabella’s crash had not been an accident.
And Daniel Carter had been there.
