Chapter 7 - THE TRAITOR INSIDE MERCER

The flash drive contained sixty-three files.

Invoices.

Bank transfers.

Security contracts.

Property deeds.

Photographs.

And one audio recording.

Daniel recognized Claire’s voice before she finished the first sentence.

“If anything happens to me, Charles Bennett is involved.”

Rachel covered her mouth.

Lorraine began crying.

Daniel sat motionless.

Claire continued.

“I don’t know how deep this goes. William’s company was used to move money through distressed properties. After William died, someone inside Daniel’s company kept parts of it alive.”

A pause.

“I haven’t told Daniel yet because I need proof.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Of course.

Claire had always needed proof before accusation.

The recording continued.

“Charles knows I’m looking.”

Then another voice appeared faintly.

Male.

“You shouldn’t have come here.”

The recording ended.

Marcus enhanced the audio overnight.

At eight the next morning, he called Daniel into the penthouse office.

“I know the second voice.”

Daniel looked up.

“Who?”

Marcus placed a photograph on the desk.

Robert Lang.

Daniel’s chief financial officer.

His father’s former accountant.

The man who had worked beside Daniel for seventeen years.

Daniel stared at the image.

“No.”

Marcus said nothing.

“Robert gave the eulogy at Claire’s funeral.”

“I know.”

“He sat beside me at the hospital.”

“I know.”

Daniel stood so quickly the chair rolled backward.

“No.”

Marcus opened a folder.

“Robert approved every Sentinel Security subcontract.”

Daniel paced once.

“He approves hundreds of contracts.”

“He also authorized payments to three LLCs on Claire’s drive.”

Daniel stopped.

“How much?”

“Almost eighteen million dollars over nine years.”

Daniel’s face hardened.

“Call Alicia.”

“Already did.”

“I want federal investigators.”

“They’re on the way.”

Daniel turned toward the window.

Below, Emma was eating cereal at the breakfast table while Lorraine watched from a cautious distance.

Rachel held Noah.

An ordinary family scene.

Built over a buried crime.

Robert Lang arrived at Mercer headquarters at nine thirty as if nothing had changed.

Daniel was waiting.

The office looked exactly as it had every Monday for years.

Robert entered carrying coffee.

“Morning.”

Daniel looked at him.

Robert slowed.

“What?”

“Sit down.”

The older man frowned.

“Daniel, I have the Brighton financing call in twenty minutes.”

“Sit.”

Robert obeyed.

Daniel placed one printed photograph on the desk.

Claire.

Taken outside a warehouse in Pueblo three days before she died.

Robert’s expression changed almost invisibly.

Daniel saw it.

“You knew.”

Robert recovered.

“Knew what?”

“Don’t insult me.”

“I have no idea what this is.”

Daniel slid a second page forward.

Bank transfers.

Robert’s signature.

“Explain.”

Robert stared.

Then leaned back.

A long silence.

“You found the drive.”

Daniel’s stomach turned.

Not denial.

Recognition.

“You knew Claire had it.”

Robert removed his glasses.

“She was supposed to let it go.”

Daniel moved around the desk.

“What did you do?”

“Nothing.”

“What did you do?”

Robert stood.

“I did not kill your wife.”

“Charles did?”

Robert’s jaw tightened.

“That wasn’t the plan.”

Daniel went completely still.

Robert realized too late what he had said.

Daniel crossed the distance between them in one step.

He grabbed Robert’s collar.

“What was the plan?”

Security entered instantly.

Daniel did not let go.

“Tell me!”

Robert’s voice shook.

“To scare her.”

“By running her off the road?”

“No. Charles was supposed to follow her. Convince her to hand over the evidence.”

Daniel’s grip tightened.

“She died.”

“I know.”

“You helped him.”

“I covered what happened afterward.”

Daniel released him as if touching him had become disgusting.

“Why?”

Robert laughed once.

Not with humor.

“Because your father left behind a financial graveyard.”

“My father was dead.”

“And you inherited everything.”

“Not his crimes.”

Robert stared at him.

“You inherited the liability.”

The truth unfolded.

William Mercer had used housing redevelopment projects to hide illegal loans and stolen investment funds.

Robert had helped structure them.

Charles handled intimidation and security.

When William died, Robert quietly continued paying old partners to keep them silent.

Claire found discrepancies.

She followed them.

She got too close.

After her death, Robert concealed records to prevent the entire Mercer empire from collapsing.

Daniel felt sick.

“You let me believe it was an accident.”

Robert’s eyes hardened.

“What would the truth have changed?”

Daniel nearly hit him.

Instead, he stepped back.

“It would have changed whether I spent five years blaming myself.”

Robert looked away.

That answer landed.

Federal agents entered ten minutes later.

Robert Lang left Mercer headquarters in handcuffs.

But Charles Bennett was gone.

His Colorado Springs office had been emptied before dawn.

Someone had warned him.

Daniel called the penthouse.

No answer from Rachel.

Again.

No answer.

His pulse climbed.

Then Mrs. Ortiz called.

“Mr. Mercer.”

Her voice shook.

“What happened?”

“Emma is gone.”

Daniel stopped breathing.

“What?”

“She was in the bedroom ten minutes ago. The security alarm sounded at the service entrance. Everyone moved toward it. When we came back…”

Daniel was already moving.

“What about Rachel and Noah?”

“They’re here.”

“Lock everything.”

“We have.”

Daniel ended the call and called Marcus.

“Find Emma.”

Within six minutes, the building cameras revealed the truth.

Emma had not been taken from inside.

She had walked out.

A text message had arrived on a prepaid phone left outside the penthouse door.

It contained a photograph of Rachel sleeping.

And a message.

If you want your mother safe, come downstairs alone.

Emma had obeyed.

Rachel collapsed when she learned.

“No.”

Daniel caught her before she hit the floor.

“No, no, no.”

“Rachel.”

“He has my baby.”

“We’re going to get her back.”

“This is my fault.”

“No.”

“I should have told you five years ago.”

Daniel held her shoulders.

“Look at me.”

She couldn’t.

“Rachel.”

Her eyes lifted.

“This is Charles’s fault.”

She was shaking violently.

Daniel’s own fear threatened to tear through him.

But Emma needed him thinking.

Not grieving.

Not raging.

Thinking.

His phone rang.

Unknown number.

Daniel answered.

A man spoke.

“Daniel Mercer.”

Charles.

Daniel’s body went cold.

“Where is she?”

“She’s safe.”

“Let me talk to her.”

A pause.

Then Emma’s voice.

“Mr. Daniel?”

He nearly broke.

“I’m here.”

“I’m sorry.”

“No. Listen to me. You did nothing wrong.”

“I thought he’d hurt Mom.”

“I know.”

Charles returned.

“You always did like rescuing broken things.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“What do you want?”

“The drive.”

“You can have it.”

Rachel stared at him.

Charles laughed.

“I also want Lorraine.”

“No.”

“Then the girl goes into the system you saved her from.”

Daniel’s voice became deadly calm.

“If you touch her—”

“You’ll what?”

Charles laughed again.

“Buy another building?”

Daniel looked at Marcus, who was tracing the call.

Thirty more seconds.

Keep him talking.

Daniel asked, “Why Claire?”

Silence.

Then Charles said, “Because she couldn’t mind her own business.”

Daniel’s eyes filled.

“She was coming for Lorraine.”

“She was stealing my wife.”

“She was saving her.”

Charles’s breathing changed.

That was it.

Possession.

Control.

Daniel continued.

“Claire wasn’t afraid of you.”

“She should’ve been.”

Marcus raised three fingers.

Daniel said, “And Emma isn’t either.”

Charles snapped, “She will be.”

The line died.

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“Got him.”

“Where?”

“Old Mercer Restoration site. South edge of Colorado Springs.”

Daniel’s face changed.

One of his father’s abandoned projects.

The place where the whole nightmare had begun.

Rachel stepped forward.

“I’m coming.”

“No.”

“Daniel.”

“No.”

“She’s my daughter.”

“And that is exactly why he wants you emotional.”

“I don’t care.”

Daniel looked at her.

“I do.”

Silence.

He lowered his voice.

“I am bringing Emma home.”

Rachel’s eyes filled.

“You can’t promise that.”

Daniel remembered telling Emma the same thing.

He touched Rachel’s face once, carefully.

“No.”

May you like

Then he corrected himself.

“But I can promise I will not stop until she is.”
