Chapter 5 - The Billionaire’s Reckoning

The ballroom fell silent.

William Sterling stood at the top of the staircase, his face drained of color. His hand shook against the polished railing.

“Caroline,” he said again.

Isabella tightened her grip on his arm.

“You need to rest,” she murmured.

But William pulled away.

For the first time that night, the billionaire did not look powerful. He looked like a man waking from a nightmare he had spent years trying to forget.

Emma stepped forward through the crowd.

“Mr. Sterling,” she called. “Ethan is alive.”

A shock moved through the room.

Guests turned toward one another. Whispers rose like smoke.

Isabella’s eyes locked on Emma.

“That woman is confused,” she said smoothly. “She attacked a member of my security team and frightened my stepson.”

“No,” Emma said. “You kidnapped him.”

“Emma,” Isabella warned.

But Emma did not stop.

“You locked Ethan behind a hidden basement wall. You tried to force him to sign papers saying he was mentally unstable. You drugged William. And you know what happened to Lily.”

The ballroom erupted.

Some guests reached for their phones. Others stepped away from Isabella as if she carried fire.

William stared at Emma.

“Lily?” he said weakly.

Isabella’s voice sharpened. “William, don’t listen to her.”

But he looked at her with growing horror.

“Lily died,” he said.

“No,” Emma replied. “Ethan says she didn’t.”

William staggered backward.

Memories seemed to crash into him all at once. His face twisted with pain. He pressed a hand to his temple.

“I saw her,” he whispered. “At the hospital. They told me she was gone.”

“They lied to you,” Emma said.

“No,” Isabella snapped. “He knew exactly what happened.”

Everyone turned toward her.

The room became still again.

Isabella realized too late what she had revealed.

William looked at her. “What did you say?”

She took a breath, trying to regain control.

“I mean… you knew the doctors handled it.”

“Doctors?” William repeated.

The front doors burst open.

Two uniformed police officers entered, followed by detectives in dark coats. Behind them came Ethan, holding Mrs. Chen’s hand.

“Dad!” Ethan cried.

William rushed down the staircase.

He stumbled halfway, nearly falling, but kept going. When he reached Ethan, he dropped to his knees and held his son tightly.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered. “I’m so sorry.”

Ethan buried his face in his father’s shoulder.

“I thought you didn’t love me anymore.”

William closed his eyes.

“I never stopped loving you.”

Emma watched, tears burning in her eyes.

Then Detective Morales approached Isabella.

“Mrs. Sterling,” he said, “we need you to come with us.”

Isabella smiled coldly. “On what charge?”

“Kidnapping. Child endangerment. Fraud. Obstruction of justice. And possibly conspiracy related to the death of Caroline Sterling.”

Her expression remained composed, but her fingers trembled.

“You have no proof.”

Emma stepped forward and held up a small object.

The hard drive.

Everyone stared.

Isabella’s face went white.

“You took it,” she said.

“No,” Emma replied. “Mr. Graves did.”

At the ballroom entrance, two officers escorted Graves inside. He walked with a limp, his face grim.

He looked at Isabella.

Then at William.

“I’m done,” Graves said.

Isabella’s eyes flashed with rage. “You coward.”

“I was a coward for too long,” he answered.

He handed Detective Morales a sealed envelope.

“Copies of financial records,” he said. “Video footage. Medical reports Isabella had forged. And a location.”

William stepped closer.

“What location?”

Graves hesitated.

Then he looked at Ethan.

“Your daughter,” he said quietly. “Lily is alive.”

William froze.

The detective opened the envelope and read the address.

“A private residential school in Vermont,” Morales said. “Registered under a false name.”

Emma’s breath caught.

“Is she safe?” William asked.

Graves lowered his eyes. “I don’t know.”

Isabella laughed suddenly.

A sharp, humorless sound.

“You all think you’re heroes now,” she said. “But Lily has spent years believing her family abandoned her. Do you think she’ll run into William’s arms? Do you think she’ll forgive him?”

William’s eyes filled with tears.

“I don’t expect forgiveness,” he said. “I only want the chance to tell her the truth.”

For the first time, Isabella seemed shaken.

Not by the police.

Not by the evidence.

But by the fact that William was no longer under her control.

As officers placed handcuffs around her wrists, she turned toward Emma.

“This is not over,” she whispered.

Emma met her gaze.

“It is for you.”

Isabella was led away through the ballroom, past the chandeliers, the stunned guests, the shattered image of the perfect Sterling marriage.

Outside, rain began to fall over Manhattan.

William stood beside Ethan, holding him close.

Then he looked at Emma.

“You saved my son,” he said.

Emma shook her head.

“We still have to save your daughter.”

William nodded.

May you like

And before dawn, they were on their way to Vermont.
