Chapter 3 - THE RECORDING THAT ENDED AN EMPIRE

The footage had no sound at first.

It did not need any.

Every person in the ballroom watched Genevieve seize Maya by the shoulder. They saw Maya struggle to pull away. They saw Genevieve raise her arm.

Then the slap landed.

Maya’s body struck the marble floor.

A horrified murmur rolled across the room.

Julian appeared in the frame several feet away.

He did not rush to his daughter.

He did not kneel beside her.

He adjusted his cufflinks.

Then the audio began.

“Control her, Eleanor. She’s becoming just as useless as you are.”

Julian’s own voice filled the ballroom.

Someone near the front whispered a curse.

Genevieve took one unsteady step backward.

“That video has been altered.”

Harrison did not look at her. “The footage was retrieved from the estate’s encrypted security archive and verified by three independent forensic laboratories. Copies were transferred to law enforcement before we arrived.”

Julian moved toward the control table, but two Blackwood security officers blocked his path.

“You illegally accessed my property,” he snapped.

I almost laughed.

The mansion had never been solely his property.

Six years earlier, when Julian needed collateral to purchase it, I had quietly arranged the mortgage through a Blackwood subsidiary. He never bothered learning who owned the debt.

Harrison displayed the property records beside the footage.

“The security system belongs to the mortgage holder,” he said. “The mortgage holder is Blackwood Residential Holdings.”

Julian turned toward me.

“You planned this.”

“No,” I said. “I spent six years protecting you from the consequences of your own behavior. Today, I stopped.”

Genevieve pushed away from him.

“This was his house. His child. He told me I had authority to discipline her.”

Julian stared at her. “Shut up.”

“You said Eleanor would be gone by tomorrow!”

“And you believed that gave you permission to hit a five-year-old?” I asked.

She looked around the ballroom, finally understanding that every camera was pointed at her.

“It wasn’t supposed to be that hard.”

My father’s arms tightened around Maya.

The gala chairman approached Julian.

“Mr. Vance, your presence is no longer welcome.”

Julian squared his shoulders, desperate to regain control.

“You cannot remove the principal sponsor.”

A silver-haired man from Delacroix Capital stepped forward.

“You are no longer the principal sponsor.”

Julian froze.

The man handed him a sealed envelope.

“Delacroix withdraws from the merger. Effective immediately.”

More envelopes followed.

Two banks terminated their credit arrangements.

A logistics partner suspended operations.

The Halcyon Foundation announced that Vance Group’s donations would be returned pending an investigation into their source.

Julian tore open one document, scanning the first page.

“This is impossible.”

“It became possible at 4:12 this afternoon,” Harrison said. “When Miss Blackwood reclaimed her legal authority.”

That was the moment the room understood.

Not Eleanor Vance.

Eleanor Blackwood.

Whispers spread through the crowd.

Reporters began typing rapidly.

Victoria recovered before her son did. She stepped forward wearing the same cruel expression she had used against me for years.

“This is an obscene display. Eleanor abandoned her responsibilities as a wife and manipulated a confused child into attacking our family.”

Maya flinched at the sound of her voice.

My father noticed.

He handed Maya to me, then moved toward Victoria.

“You raised your hand against my daughter today.”

Victoria’s face stiffened. “She assaulted me.”

“After you attempted to strike her.”

“She is my son’s wife.”

“Not anymore.”

I reached into my purse and removed the signed divorce papers.

Julian’s expression changed.

He had expected me to sign them.

He had not expected me to keep a copy.

I handed the documents to Harrison.

“The papers Julian presented claimed I waived all property rights and agreed that Maya would remain with him.”

Harrison nodded. “An arrangement he believed became binding upon signature.”

Julian found his voice again. “She signed voluntarily.”

“She signed under coercion immediately after you permitted your mistress to assault her child,” Harrison said. “The documents are legally worthless.”

A woman in a navy suit approached from the far side of the ballroom. I recognized District Attorney Lena Ortiz from newspaper photographs.

Two uniformed officers followed her.

Genevieve’s face drained of color.

Ortiz stopped in front of her.

“Genevieve Laurent, you are under arrest on suspicion of assaulting a minor.”

“No.”

An officer reached for her wrist.

“No!” Genevieve pulled away and grabbed Julian’s arm. “Tell them! Tell them you wanted the girl frightened before the gala!”

The room erupted.

Julian shoved her hand away.

“You’re insane.”

“You said if Maya behaved badly enough, Eleanor would lose custody!”

“Stop talking.”

“You promised me the penthouse!”

Ortiz glanced at one of the officers.

“Add conspiracy to commit custodial interference to the investigation.”

Genevieve began crying as she was handcuffed. The performance might have worked on people who had not just watched her strike a child.

It did not work here.

As the police led her away, she twisted toward Julian.

“You think I’m taking the blame for everything? Ask him why he married Eleanor! Ask him what Victoria found in the Blackwood trust!”

My father went still.

Julian’s face lost what little color remained.

Victoria stared at Genevieve with naked hatred.

“What trust?” I asked.

No one answered.

Genevieve laughed bitterly.

“He never loved you, Eleanor. He knew exactly who you were before your first date.”

Julian lunged toward her, but security restrained him.

I felt the ballroom tilt.

“That’s a lie.”

“Is it?” she shouted. “Check the file in Victoria’s private safe. Ask them what happens when a Blackwood daughter has a child.”

The officers dragged her through the doors.

Julian straightened his jacket.

“Do not listen to her.”

I stared at the man I had married.

Six years earlier, we had met by chance at a small charity auction in Brooklyn. At least, I had believed it was chance.

“You knew my identity?”

“Of course not.”

My father looked toward Harrison.

Something passed between them.

Something they were trying to hide.

“Father?”

“This is not the place.”

“That means she was telling the truth.”

Julian stepped closer. “Eleanor, I can explain.”

I backed away.

The cruelty was one thing.

The affairs were another.

But the possibility that our entire marriage had been designed from the beginning made every memory feel poisoned.

Maya touched my cheek.

“Mommy?”

I forced myself to breathe.

My father turned to Julian.

“You will have no contact with my daughter or granddaughter.”

“You cannot keep my child from me.”

“Watch me.”

Julian smiled then.

It was not the smile of a defeated man.

It was the smile of someone who still believed he held a weapon.

“I wouldn’t be so confident, Augustus.”

He reached inside his jacket.

Security reacted instantly, but Julian only removed a folded document.

He held it up.

“This is a certified copy of the Blackwood Continuity Trust.”

My father’s expression hardened.

Julian continued, his voice loud enough for every reporter to hear.

“According to your late wife’s terms, Maya Blackwood became the beneficial heir to forty-one percent of the Blackwood family holdings at birth.”

My breath stopped.

“And as her legal father,” Julian said, “I control those shares until she turns twenty-one.”

Harrison took the paper, scanned it, and went pale.

“That cannot be.”

Julian’s smile widened.

“Your empire belongs to my daughter.”

May you like

His eyes settled on me.

“And until a judge says otherwise, my daughter belongs to me.”
