Chapter 7 - The Heart That Chose to Stay

The north gate was empty by the time Damian’s security team reached it.

The black van had vanished.

Only the yellow rain boot remained on the wet pavement.

Mara held it in both hands, her entire body shaking.

Lila was not missing.

Not yet.

She was asleep in the guest room under Lena’s protection.

But the boot was a message.

Arman could reach them whenever he wanted.

And he wanted them afraid.

For years, Damian Volkov had ruled through fear.

Now fear had come home to him.

He stood beside Mara in the rain, his face pale but controlled.

“I will end this,” he said.

Mara looked at him.

“No. You will not end it the way you used to.”

Viktor watched them carefully.

Damian’s eyes darkened.

“You think I do not know what my brother is capable of?”

“I think you do. That is why you are tempted to become just like him.”

He looked away.

Mara stepped closer.

“Lila deserves a world where no one solves fear with more fear.”

The words landed heavily.

Damian did not answer.

But he handed Viktor his phone.

“Call Detective Price,” he said. “Tell her I want to make a full statement.”

Viktor stared at him.

“Sir?”

“Everything. The money. The operations. The names. The things I have done and the things Arman has done.”

Mara looked at him.

“You would do that?”

“I have spent my entire life protecting an empire that has destroyed everyone I loved,” Damian said. “If I want Lila safe, I have to destroy the thing that makes her unsafe.”

It was not redemption.
