Chapter 4 - The Lake House Trap

The old lake house had been empty since their mother died.
Rachel had not been there in years.
It sat at the end of a gravel road, surrounded by bare trees and dark water. Childhood memories lived there—summer cookouts, birthday candles, Vanessa teaching Rachel how to swim.
Now it felt like a place where those memories had gone to rot.
Rachel parked near the gate.
Detective Holt had insisted on surveillance. Officers were positioned nearby, but Rachel had to go inside first. Vanessa had warned that if she saw police, she would disappear with Mason.
Rachel walked toward the house carrying her laptop bag.
The front door was unlocked.
Inside, the air smelled like dust and old wood.
“Vanessa?” Rachel called.
No answer.
Then she heard Mason’s voice from upstairs.
“Mom?”
Rachel ran.
She found him sitting on an old bed in the guest room, frightened but unharmed. Tyler sat beside him, crying silently.
“Mom!” Mason rushed into Rachel’s arms.
Rachel held him so tightly he could barely breathe.
“I’m here,” she whispered. “I’m here.”
Tyler looked terrified.
“I told her not to do this,” he said. “I told her I was sorry about the cake.”
Rachel looked at him.
“Where is your mom?”
A slow clap sounded from the doorway.
Vanessa stood there with Greg.
“You always get to be the hero,” Vanessa said.
Greg looked miserable. He would not meet Rachel’s eyes.
Rachel held Mason behind her.
“What do you want?”
“The passwords,” Vanessa said. “And the police report withdrawn.”
“You kidnapped my son.”
“I brought him somewhere safe.”
“You took him from school without permission.”
Vanessa’s eyes flashed.
“I needed you to listen.”
Rachel shook her head.
“No. You needed control.”
Greg suddenly spoke.
“This has gone too far, Vanessa.”
She turned toward him. “Don’t start now.”
“You told me we were just scaring her.”
“And you believed me?” Rachel asked.
Greg looked ashamed.
Vanessa stepped toward Rachel.
“Give me the laptop.”
Outside, a car door slammed.
Vanessa heard it.
Her face changed.
“You brought police.”
“I brought help,” Rachel said.
Vanessa grabbed a lamp from a side table and lifted it.
Mason screamed.
Before she could move, Tyler stepped between Vanessa and Rachel.
“Stop it!” he shouted. “You always say it’s their fault!”
The room froze.
Tyler’s face was wet with tears.
“You told me to ruin Mason’s cake. You told me he deserved it. But he didn’t do anything.”
Vanessa stared at her son.
Tyler’s voice shook.
“You keep saying Aunt Rachel owes us, but she gave us everything.”
Greg covered his face.
Outside, officers rushed toward the house.
Vanessa dropped the lamp.
It hit the floor and shattered.
Then she looked at Rachel with the expression of someone who had lost the only power she ever understood.
Control.
Detective Holt entered moments later.
Vanessa was arrested for kidnapping, extortion, and fraud.
As officers led her outside, Vanessa looked back at Rachel.
“You think this makes you better than me?”
Rachel held Mason close.
May you like
“No,” she said. “It makes me free.”
