Chapter 5 - The Room With No Air

The fire began on the thirty-eighth floor.

Harrow Development’s executive offices occupied the top six levels of the tower. Grant had ordered the installation of a private archival vault after claiming competitors were attempting corporate espionage.

The vault was fire-resistant, airtight, and controlled by a biometric panel.

That was where the central server remained.

Celeste called me from inside the building.

“Grant locked us in.”

I sat inside the federal command vehicle across the street, wrapped in a hospital blanket.

“You ran with him.”

“He said he had passports and money.”

“You believed him again?”

“I believed I could take the server drive and leave before he noticed.”

Smoke alarms screamed through her phone.

“He started the fire in the outer offices. The vault sealed automatically.”

“Where is Grant?”

“With me.”

His voice entered the call.

“Hello, darling.”

I closed my eyes.

Detective Mercer signaled technicians to trace the connection.

“Open the vault,” Grant said.

“You installed it.”

“Your fingerprint is the emergency override.”

“You copied my print.”

“The system rejected it.”

“Because I changed the authorization six months ago.”

Silence.

Mara had helped me replace the biometric requirement with a live voice-and-pulse confirmation after we discovered Grant accessing private records.

A dead or unconscious Evelyn could not open the vault.

Neither could a silicone fingerprint.

Only I could.

Smoke could not enter the vault, but the airtight room had a limited oxygen supply. The display showed thirty-two minutes remaining.

Grant had built a room that protected data by slowly suffocating anyone trapped inside.

“Open it,” he demanded.

“Give the server to federal agents.”

“You think I will spend my life in prison?”

“Yes.”

Celeste shouted in the background.

“He has a gun!”

A shot exploded through the phone.

Then Celeste screamed.

Grant returned to the line.

“She is alive. For now.”

Detective Mercer’s tactical team reached the thirty-fifth floor. Fire blocked the main staircase. The private elevators had shut down.

Building engineers could not open the vault remotely because Grant had disconnected outside controls.

Only my authorization could trigger the emergency ventilation system.

Mara looked at me.

“If you open it, he may destroy the server.”

“If I don’t, they die.”

“Grant tried to kill you twice.”

“I know.”

“Celeste helped him.”

“I know that too.”

Grant heard through the phone.

“You always were sentimental.”

“No,” I said. “I’m deciding who I am.”

I entered the emergency authorization through the secured terminal.

The system requested my voice.

“Evelyn Harrow. Trustee authorization seven.”

Then it required a live pulse. I pressed two fingers against the medical sensor.

The ventilation panel activated.

Inside the vault, fans began moving fresh air.

Grant laughed.

“I knew you would save me.”

“I did not save you from consequences.”

The vault door unlocked for emergency evacuation.

Federal agents were already waiting outside.

Grant fired through the opening.

Agents returned controlled fire, striking his shoulder.

Celeste crawled beneath the desk with a wound along her arm.

Grant retreated toward the server rack.

He held a lighter over a stack of financial ledgers.

Detective Mercer shouted for him to stop.

Grant looked toward the ceiling camera.

He knew I was watching.

“You could have given me everything,” he said.

“I did.”

His face twisted.

“My name made you important.”

“My money made your name possible.”

He lowered the lighter.

For a second, I thought he would surrender.

Then he reached for the server’s manual destruction switch.

Celeste threw a metal drive case at his hand.

The lighter fell.

Agents tackled him before he reached the switch.

Grant struck the floor gasping.

Smoke had already reduced his oxygen before ventilation started. Panic widened his eyes.

“Air,” he begged. “I can’t breathe.”

The words came through the camera.

The same man who pinched my breathing tube now begged strangers to open his lungs.

A paramedic placed an oxygen mask over his face.

I watched without satisfaction.

Justice was not letting him suffocate.

Justice was keeping him alive long enough to answer every question.

Celeste was arrested after treatment.

The server remained intact.

Investigators recovered the pension records, shell-company payments, forged DNR documents, and Grant’s messages ordering Owen Pike to force my car off the road.

Dr. Lowell had received two hundred thousand dollars to prepare the medical orders.

Owen Pike was arrested at a private airfield the following morning.

The recovered files should have completed the case.

Instead, one encrypted folder revealed a second authorization above Grant’s.

Every major payment required approval from C.H.

Constance Harrow.

Grant’s mother.

The respected chairwoman who claimed to have retired five years earlier.

A recorded call played from the server.

Constance’s voice was unmistakable.

If Evelyn survives the crash, use the DNR. Grant, do not become weak because she looks frightened. Pinch the line if you have to.

Grant had tried to kill me.

But his mother had designed the entire plan.

May you like

And while federal agents listened to the recording, Constance’s private jet requested immediate clearance to leave the country.
