Chapter 7 - THE MUSIC BOX

Claire’s mansion had never looked dangerous before.

It had looked controlled.

Gated.

Guarded.

Predictable.

Now, from the FBI surveillance van two blocks away, it looked like a target.

Agents confirmed the alarm system had been bypassed.

Someone was inside.

Alice.

Maybe others.

Claire stared at the live thermal feed.

“Ellie stays here.”

Her daughter immediately said, “No.”

Claire turned.

“That is not negotiable.”

“But it’s my music box.”

“Exactly.”

Ellie crossed her arms.

Jack crouched beside her.

“Your mom is right.”

She looked betrayed.

“You always say kids should know stuff.”

“Yes.”

“Then tell me.”

Jack glanced at Claire.

She nodded reluctantly.

He explained simply.

“Your dad hid information inside the box years ago. Bad people want it.”

Ellie looked at Daniel.

“You put bad stuff in my birthday present?”

Daniel winced.

“Information. I thought no one would ever search a child’s toy.”

“That was dumb.”

“Yes.”

Jack almost smiled.

Ellie continued.

“Did you know you were leaving?”

Daniel looked at the floor.

“Yes.”

Claire closed her eyes.

The cruelty of it.

A goodbye hidden inside a present nobody understood.

Daniel whispered, “I wanted something near you.”

Ellie’s face softened only slightly.

“Did you listen to the music?”

Daniel swallowed.

“Yes.”

“What song?”

“Moon River.”

Ellie stared.

Correct.

He remembered.

That mattered.

She looked at Claire.

“I’ll stay.”

Claire kissed her forehead.

“Thank you.”

Jack stood.

“I’m going with the team.”

Claire’s body tensed.

He saw it.

“I’m coming back.”

She looked at him.

“You can’t promise.”

“No.”

He nodded.

“But I can tell you the plan.”

That was better.

Daniel said, “I’m going too.”

Claire stared.

“You are not military.”

“I know the mechanism.”

Jack shook his head.

“You tell me.”

Daniel explained the hidden compartment.

Jack listened.

Then Claire said, “I’m going.”

Both men said no.

She almost laughed.

“Interesting.”

“Claire,” Jack began.

“It’s my house. My daughter’s room. My security system.”

Daniel frowned.

“You’re the CEO.”

“Exactly.”

Jack looked at her.

“You have tactical experience?”

“No.”

“Then you stay.”

Claire’s temper rose.

“I built a national freight network from one leased warehouse.”

“That does not stop bullets.”

“No.”

She leaned closer.

“But I know where every panic room, service passage, network control, and hidden camera is because I paid for all of them.”

Jack paused.

Then nodded.

“Fine.”

Daniel looked offended.

“That worked?”

“She provided relevant capability.”

Claire almost smiled.

“Thank you.”

Jack pointed.

“You stay behind me.”

“Don’t ruin it.”

They entered through a service tunnel beneath the garage.

FBI tactical officers led.

Jack behind them.

Claire.

Daniel.

The house was dark.

One camera feed remained active from Claire’s private system.

The nanny corridor.

A figure crossed.

Alice.

Claire stopped breathing.

She had known Alice for eleven years.

There was something uniquely violating about betrayal wearing a familiar coat.

They reached the upper floor.

Ellie’s bedroom door stood open.

Music box gone.

Jack held up a fist.

Voices downstairs.

Alice.

A man.

“Drive’s not here.”

“It has to be.”

“You said Cross hid it in the box.”

“He did.”

Daniel whispered, “Compartment.”

Claire looked at him.

“You said they need a release pin.”

“Yes.”

“Would Alice know?”

“No.”

Then why box missing?

They followed quietly.

The music room.

Alice stood near the piano smashing the wooden box with a fireplace tool.

Claire flinched.

Daniel did too.

A man with her held a pistol.

Jack whispered to the FBI team leader.

Agents spread.

Then Alice shouted:

“Claire.”

Everyone froze.

She was looking directly toward the doorway.

“I know you’re there.”

Claire stepped out before Jack could stop her.

His face went furious.

Alice smiled.

“I knew you wouldn’t let men handle your own house.”

“Eleven years.”

Alice’s smile faded.

“What?”

“I trusted you eleven years.”

“You trusted numbers.”

Claire’s jaw tightened.

“Apparently numbers were more honest.”

The armed man grabbed Daniel as he entered from the side hall.

Too fast.

Gun against his ribs.

Jack raised his weapon.

Alice lifted the broken music box.

“Drive.”

Daniel stared.

“Not in the wood.”

Alice’s face twisted.

“Then where?”

He looked toward the brass ballerina mechanism lying on the floor.

“Base spindle.”

Alice kicked it toward him.

“Open it.”

Daniel knelt.

His hands shook.

He twisted the spindle cap.

A tiny encrypted memory chip slid into his palm.

Alice smiled.

“There.”

Daniel closed his fist.

“Let him go,” Claire said.

Alice laughed.

“You still think this is a negotiation.”

“What do you want?”

“The archive.”

“You have it.”

“And access credentials.”

Daniel said, “No.”

The armed man pressed the gun harder.

Jack’s eyes moved.

Claire recognized calculation.

Timing.

Angles.

Alice looked at Jack.

“The janitor.”

He said nothing.

“You really brought hotel maintenance into this?”

Claire smiled without humor.

“That was your mistake too.”

Alice frowned.

“What?”

“You notice titles.”

Claire looked at Jack.

“Not people.”

Alice’s face hardened.

Jack moved.

He kicked the fallen fireplace tool across the floor.

It struck the gunman’s ankle.

Daniel dropped instantly.

Agents surged.

A shot fired.

Claire screamed.

Jack tackled Alice away from the chip.

The gunman went down beneath two agents.

Daniel rolled behind the piano.

Alice pulled a small pistol from her coat.

Aimed at Claire.

Jack saw.

“Claire!”

He shoved her.

The shot hit him high in the shoulder.

He fell.

Everything inside Claire stopped.

“No!”

Agents disarmed Alice.

Daniel crawled toward Jack.

Claire reached him first.

Blood spread beneath his sweater.

His eyes were open.

“Jack.”

“I’m okay.”

“You’re shot.”

“Very observant.”

“Don’t joke.”

His hand found hers.

“Then stop looking like I died.”

Her eyes filled.

Across the room Alice was being handcuffed.

She looked at Claire with hatred.

“You destroyed everything for a janitor.”

Claire turned.

Something cold entered her face.

“No.”

She looked at Jack.

Then Daniel.

Then the broken music box.

“You destroyed yourself because you thought some people were too unimportant to see.”

Alice said nothing.

Daniel picked up the memory chip.

Agent Cole entered.

“Archive?”

He handed it over.

“Everything.”

Morrow’s domestic network.

Names.

Payments.

Routes.

The evidence Daniel had buried six years ago rather than risk anyone finding on him.

Within forty-eight hours, federal agents arrested eleven people across three states.

Sterling Risk collapsed.

Three Whitmore executives were charged.

Richard Sloan was cleared after investigators confirmed Alice had used his office credentials.

Marcus kept his job.

Barely.

Claire made him rebuild security from the ground up.

Jack spent one night in the hospital.

The bullet had passed through muscle.

Painful.

Not fatal.

When he woke the next morning, Ellie was sitting beside his bed.

Claire had brought her only after doctors said it was safe.

Jack blinked.

“Hey.”

Ellie’s eyes were red.

“You got shot.”

“Apparently.”

“You said you were coming back.”

“I did.”

She stared.

Then climbed carefully onto the chair.

“Can I ask something?”

“Yes.”

“Are you my dad?”

Jack became completely still.

Claire, standing at the door, stopped breathing.

Daniel stood behind her.

He heard too.

Jack looked at Ellie.

“No.”

Her face fell.

Then he continued.

“You already have a dad.”

He looked toward Daniel.

Ellie followed his gaze.

Jack said softly, “And he has a lot of work to do to become the father you deserve.”

Daniel’s eyes filled.

Then Jack looked back at Ellie.

“But if what you’re asking is whether I care about you…”

He held out his good hand.

“Yes.”

She took it.

“Whether I’ll show up if I say I will…”

“Yes.”

“Whether you can eat half my sandwich…”

A tiny smile.

“Yes.”

Ellie nodded.

“What are you then?”

Jack thought.

“Jack.”

She frowned.

“That’s boring.”

“Boring is underrated.”

May you like

Claire laughed through tears.

And for the first time, Daniel did too.
