Chapter 7 - THE NIGHT THE HOUSE TURNED AGAINST HIM

I dropped to the floor.
Glass rained across Lucia’s bed.
She screamed.
Adrian’s security officer shoved us behind the wall while nurses rushed into the room.
The object through the window wasn’t a bullet.
It was a steel cylinder attached to a cable.
A message.
DELETE THE VIDEO.
Santos took custody of Karen’s phone immediately.
Too late for Victor.
The video had already uploaded automatically to cloud storage.
Copies existed in three separate police systems.
Victor’s mistake was thinking everyone else still played by his rules.
By midnight, a warrant had been prepared.
By one a.m., Victor Valente had disappeared.
His lake house was empty.
His driver was gone.
Two private aircraft registered to his companies remained grounded.
Nobody knew where he was.
Adrian moved Emma and me to a safe property north of the city.
Lucia stayed in the hospital under police protection because moving her before surgery was too dangerous.
I hated leaving her.
She forced me.
“If you don’t go,” she said weakly, “you’re going to stand outside my door all night terrifying the nurses.”
“I do not terrify nurses.”
“You threatened one with a chair yesterday.”
“She ignored the call button.”
Lucia smiled.
“Go protect the baby.”
So I did.
The safe property was an old stone house near Lake Forest.
Not a mansion.
No staff except Dante and two trusted guards.
Emma slept upstairs.
Adrian remained awake downstairs, reading files from Victor’s companies.
At two in the morning, I found him in the kitchen.
“You sleep?”
“No.”
“Ever?”
“Sometimes in cars.”
“That’s healthy.”
“I’m told nothing about my life is healthy.”
I almost smiled.
Almost.
He noticed.
That annoyed me.
“You look pleased with yourself.”
“I saw that.”
“Don’t get used to it.”
“I won’t.”
The quiet between us changed.
Not romantic.
Not yet.
Just less hostile.
Then Adrian placed a folder on the table.
“What is that?”
“My father’s trust.”
I opened it.
Elena’s shares.
Emma’s inheritance.
Victor’s contingent rights.
Everything matched what Adrian had explained.
Except one handwritten note had been added years later.
“If anything happens to Emma before her first birthday, the contingent transfer is suspended pending independent investigation.”
I looked up.
“Then Victor wouldn’t automatically get the shares.”
“No.”
“So why try to kill her?”
“Because he never knew this amendment existed.”
“Who did?”
“Elena.”
My eyes widened.
Adrian touched the note.
“My father made the amendment after Elena became pregnant. She insisted on it.”
“Why?”
“She didn’t trust Victor.”
There was pain in his voice.
“You said Elena trusted almost everyone.”
“Apparently not him.”
Dante entered.
“Boss.”
Adrian looked up.
“We have a problem.”
Within five minutes, we learned someone had entered the Valente estate using an old master authorization.
Victor.
Adrian’s estate staff were still inside.
Including housekeeper Rosa, cook Marcus, two gardeners, and a night nurse.
Victor had taken control of the house.
Worse, a falsified emergency guardianship petition had been filed claiming Adrian’s criminal associations made him unfit to protect Emma.
Victor was trying to use the legal system before the police could find him.
“He wants us to bring Emma back,” I said.
“Yes.”
“To the estate.”
“Yes.”
“So he can control the location.”
Adrian looked at Dante.
“Get the helicopter ready.”
“No.”
Both men looked at me.
“You cannot go there angry.”
Adrian’s stare hardened.
“He is holding my staff.”
“And he wants you irrational.”
“He tried to murder my daughter.”
“I know.”
“He threatened Lucia.”
“I know.”
“He framed you.”
“Yes.”
“Then why are you telling me not to destroy him?”
“Because that’s what he expects.”
Adrian said nothing.
I stepped closer.
“He has spent your whole life telling you anger makes you weak, then deliberately making you angry.”
That landed.
“Don’t give him what he wants.”
For several seconds, Adrian simply stared at me.
Then he nodded.
“Fine.”
Dante blinked.
I almost laughed at his surprise.
We didn’t storm the estate.
We built a trap.
Santos staged a false communication claiming Karen’s original phone had been damaged and the cloud copy corrupted.
Adrian publicly announced he would bring Emma to the estate to negotiate a surrender.
Victor believed it.
At four thirty in the morning, we entered through the front gate.
Emma wasn’t with us.
She was twenty miles away with an FBI protection team.
Victor didn’t know that.
The house was dark.
Adrian entered first.
I followed despite everyone telling me not to.
The staff had been locked in the wine cellar.
Alive.
Unhurt.
Victor stood in the nursery.
Emma’s empty crib behind him.
He looked at me.
“Where is she?”
Adrian answered.
“Safe.”
Victor’s expression changed.
“You lied.”
“You taught me.”
Victor laughed.
Then he lifted a folder.
“I still have enough evidence to send you to prison for twenty years.”
Adrian’s face remained calm.
“Probably.”
I looked at him.
He meant it.
Victor seemed confused.
“You think I’m bluffing?”
“No.”
“I can burn everything you built.”
Adrian glanced around Emma’s nursery.
“You already tried.”
Victor’s composure finally cracked.
“You have no idea what I sacrificed for this family.”
“Emma is the family.”
“She is an infant!”
“She is my daughter.”
Victor slammed the folder onto the crib.
“You would throw away an empire for her?”
“Yes.”
No hesitation.
Victor looked at me.
“This is what you did.”
I laughed.
“Me?”
“You made him weak.”
“No.”
I took one step forward.
“I think you’re just finally seeing what strength looks like when nobody is afraid of you.”
Victor reached inside his jacket.
Every hidden tactical officer in the corridor moved at once.
But Victor didn’t pull a gun.
He pulled a lighter.
He ignited the folder.
Santos rushed forward.
Victor dropped the burning papers into a wastebasket.
Dante extinguished them within seconds.
Victor smiled.
“Too late.”
Santos held up an evidence bag.
“No.”
Inside was a hard drive.
“Your accountant gave us everything forty minutes ago.”
Victor’s face emptied.
Outside, sirens approached.
For the first time, he looked old.
He turned toward Adrian.
“You’re going to let police take your own blood?”
Adrian stared at him.
“Blood isn’t loyalty.”
The officers handcuffed Victor.
As they led him away, he looked at me.
“You think this ends well?”
I didn’t answer.
Because my phone was ringing.
Lucia’s hospital.
I picked up.
“Ms. Martinez?”
“Yes?”
“This is Dr. Chen.”
Something in his voice made my knees weak.
“We need you to come immediately.”
“Why?”
“Your sister’s condition has changed.”
My heart stopped.
“Her surgery was supposed to be tomorrow.”
“That’s the problem.”
A pause.
May you like
“She may not survive until tomorrow.”
