Chapter 3 - THE UNCLE WHO KNEW LILY’S BIRTHDAY

“Dominic.”

Cesare’s voice came through the door.

“Open it.”

Dominic did not.

Instead he called Bruno.

“Why is he here?”

Bruno’s voice came through the phone.

“He followed me.”

“You didn’t notice?”

“I noticed three blocks ago. Too late to shake him without making noise.”

Dominic looked at Elena.

She held Lily against her hip now.

“Take the rear stairs.”

“There aren’t any.”

Of course.

Cheap building.

One stairwell.

One exit.

Cesare knocked again.

“Elena.”

She flinched.

Dominic went completely still.

Cesare knew her name.

Not theoretically.

Not from some old story.

He knew she was standing on the other side.

Dominic opened the door.

Cesare smiled.

“Finally.”

Dominic stepped outside and pulled the door mostly closed behind him.

“How long?”

Cesare’s smile faded.

“What?”

“How long have you known where she was?”

The older man adjusted his cuff.

“This is not a hallway conversation.”

“It is today.”

Bruno stood below them.

Two pedestrians passed on the sidewalk.

Rain continued.

Cesare lowered his voice.

“Your father made decisions.”

“After he died.”

“What?”

“My letters.”

Cesare’s eyes changed.

Dominic saw it.

“You intercepted them.”

“I protected you.”

There it was.

The Moretti family prayer.

Protection.

Dominic laughed softly.

“You signed for one two years ago.”

Cesare did not deny it.

“Why?”

“Because nothing had changed.”

“My father was dead.”

“Your enemies weren’t.”

“My daughter existed.”

Cesare went still.

Dominic stepped closer.

“You knew.”

Silence.

“How long?”

Cesare looked toward the green door.

“Since before she was born.”

Dominic’s hands curled.

Bruno moved one step closer.

Not to stop Dominic from being dangerous.

To make sure he chose when.

Cesare noticed.

“Control yourself.”

Dominic smiled.

“Bad choice of words.”

“Think.”

“I am.”

“If that child is yours, what happens when the old families find out?”

“My concern.”

“No.”

Cesare’s voice sharpened.

“That is exactly the problem. You think because you sit at the head of the table now that only your wishes matter.”

“My child mattered.”

“You didn’t know her.”

“Because you made sure I didn’t.”

The apartment door opened.

Elena stood there.

“You came to the hospital.”

Cesare looked at her.

Dominic turned.

“What?”

Elena’s face was white.

“The day Lily was born.”

Dominic forgot Cesare for a second.

“You never told me.”

“I’m telling you now.”

She looked directly at Cesare.

“He stood outside the nursery.”

Cesare’s jaw tightened.

“Why?”

Dominic demanded.

Cesare said nothing.

Elena continued.

“He gave me an envelope.”

“What was in it?”

“A birth certificate form.”

Dominic stared.

“With the father’s section blank.”

His vision narrowed.

Cesare said:

“That was safer.”

“For who?”

“For Lily.”

“You erased me.”

“I removed a target.”

Dominic almost struck him.

Elena’s voice cut through.

“Dominic.”

He stopped.

Lily was watching from behind her mother’s legs.

That was enough.

Dominic lowered his hands.

Cesare noticed.

His eyes moved to Lily.

For the first time, something almost human entered his face.

“She has your mother’s eyes.”

Dominic stepped between them.

“You don’t speak to her.”

Cesare’s expression hardened.

“I helped keep her alive.”

Elena laughed bitterly.

“You kept her poor.”

Cesare looked at her.

“I left money.”

“You left threats.”

“What?”

Dominic turned.

Elena walked inside and returned with another envelope.

Inside were five notes.

One for each year.

No signature.

No return address.

But the handwriting was unmistakable.

Cesare’s.

FIRST BIRTHDAY:

Stay where you are. Do not contact Dominic.

SECOND:

Children survive best when adults accept reality.

THIRD:

New York is not safe for you.

FOURTH:

Do not mistake Vittorio’s death for freedom.

FIFTH:

If Lily is ever brought into Moretti affairs, consequences will follow.

Dominic read the last line twice.

His voice became quiet.

“You sent this three months ago.”

Cesare said nothing.

“You threatened my daughter.”

“I warned Elena.”

“You threatened my daughter.”

“She is alive because Elena listened.”

Dominic stepped toward him.

Bruno finally spoke.

“Boss.”

One word.

Not warning.

Reminder.

Lily was still there.

Dominic looked back.

The child held Bunny’s ears over its face.

Hiding.

He stepped away from Cesare.

“Leave.”

Cesare stared.

“You are making a mistake.”

“Probably.”

“You need to verify paternity before doing anything reckless.”

Dominic’s eyes narrowed.

“You want the test.”

“I want facts.”

“Fine.”

Cesare relaxed fractionally.

Then Dominic added:

“And while I get them, you’re cut out.”

Cesare froze.

“From what?”

“Everything.”

“Dominic.”

“Your accounts.”

“You cannot—”

“Company access.”

“Think carefully.”

“Security clearance.”

Cesare’s face changed.

“You would strip your own uncle over a woman who ran from you?”

Elena flinched.

Dominic’s voice dropped.

“No.”

He looked toward Lily.

“I’m stripping you because you stole five years from me and called it loyalty.”

Cesare stepped closer.

“You don’t know what your father knew.”

“Then tell me.”

Silence.

“What did he know?”

Cesare looked at Elena.

Then at Dominic.

“Ask her why she was really at Saint Vincent’s Hospital the night she met you.”

Elena went still.

Dominic saw it.

“What does that mean?”

Cesare smiled faintly.

“You think your love story began by accident?”

Elena whispered:

“Don’t.”

Dominic turned.

“Elena.”

“Not here.”

“Did you know who I was before we met?”

Her eyes filled.

“Yes.”

The hallway seemed to tilt.

Dominic stared.

“You told me you didn’t.”

“I lied.”

Cesare’s expression became almost satisfied.

“Finally.”

Dominic looked at Elena.

“What did you want?”

“Nothing from you.”

“Then why were you there?”

She closed her eyes.

“Because my brother was dying.”

That was not what Dominic expected.

“What?”

Elena swallowed.

“His name was Daniel.”

“Was?”

“He died that night.”

Dominic’s anger paused.

“What does that have to do with me?”

“Everything.”

She looked at him.

“He worked for your father.”

Cesare’s smile disappeared.

Elena continued.

“Daniel was twenty-six. He drove for Vittorio.”

Dominic felt cold.

“He got shot?”

“No.”

Elena’s voice shook.

“Beaten.”

The word landed.

“By who?”

She looked at Cesare.

Cesare turned away.

Dominic understood before she spoke.

“Your father’s men.”

“Why?”

“Because Daniel found accounting records.”

Cesare said sharply:

“That is enough.”

Dominic turned on him.

“You don’t decide what is enough anymore.”

Elena continued.

“Daniel found money moving through union pension accounts into companies Vittorio controlled.”

Dominic stared.

His father had done many things.

Stealing from pension funds had never appeared in the official family history.

“My brother said he was going to federal investigators.”

“And?”

“Somebody found out.”

She looked at Cesare.

“Daniel was left behind a warehouse.”

Dominic’s hands tightened.

“I went to the hospital.”

“The night we met.”

“Yes.”

Memory returned.

Elena crying beside a vending machine.

Dominic offering coffee.

She told him her brother had been in an accident.

He never questioned it.

“Did you approach me because of Daniel?”

“No.”

“Did you know I was Vittorio’s son?”

“Yes.”

“And still spoke to me?”

“I hated you.”

That almost made him laugh.

“I remember.”

She did not smile.

“Then you sat with me for six hours.”

Dominic remembered too.

He missed an entire meeting.

His father had been furious.

Elena continued.

“You never asked what Daniel had done wrong.”

“You told me accident.”

“I know.”

“You just kept asking whether I had eaten.”

Her voice broke.

“And I realized you weren’t him.”

Dominic looked at Cesare.

“Did my father order Daniel killed?”

Cesare stared back.

“I don’t know.”

“Did you?”

“No.”

“Did you know?”

A long pause.

“Yes.”

Elena closed her eyes.

Dominic’s stomach turned.

Cesare continued.

“I knew he had been questioned.”

“Beaten.”

“Yes.”

“And you protected my father.”

“Yes.”

“Just like you protected me from Elena.”

Cesare said nothing.

Dominic finally understood the pattern.

Cesare did not protect people.

He protected structures.

The Moretti name.

Its money.

Its secrecy.

Anyone could be sacrificed if the structure remained.

Daniel.

Elena.

Lily.

Perhaps Dominic too.

Cesare straightened.

“You want to destroy everything your father built because you’ve suddenly discovered morality?”

“No.”

Dominic’s voice was quiet.

“I’m discovering accuracy.”

He looked at Elena.

“DNA test tomorrow.”

She hesitated.

Then nodded.

“Independent lab.”

“Yes.”

“No Moretti doctor.”

“Yes.”

Cesare laughed.

“You’re really doing this.”

Dominic looked at him.

“Yes.”

Cesare turned to leave.

Then paused.

“You should know one more thing.”

Dominic waited.

“If Lily is yours, there is a trust.”

Elena frowned.

“What trust?”

Cesare looked at Dominic.

“Your father amended the succession documents after Sophia was born.”

Dominic’s stomach tightened.

Sophia?

He had no daughter named Sophia in this story. Wait! That's previous story contamination. Need correct immediately. We need avoid. Dominic maybe no prior kid. I accidentally introduced Sophia. Can't. Need rewrite from "Your father amended..." Better: "after you took control" or "when you turned thirty." Need ensure final has no Sophia. Let's continue correcting in final? We can retroactively say after Dominic turned thirty. Since final already being generated, can adjust now in text. Need be coherent. Continue:

“If Lily is yours, Vittorio’s dormant bloodline trust activates.” But he could have hidden it. If direct descendant, maybe control 34% of legitimate Moretti holding company. This raises stakes. Great.

Let's continue.

May you like

Cesare said "Your father amended succession documents ten years ago." Let's fix current text in final? I can still compose final entirely, no issue because user sees final as one message. We'll ensure no Sophia. Continue from "there is a trust." We need chapter 3 around 1100. We're already ~1800? Actually long. Fine.

Need continue chap 4-9. We can keep slightly shorter ~1000-1300. Let's proceed.
