Chapter 4 - The Woman Behind the Wall

The scream came from the abandoned servants’ wing.
Spencer followed Mrs. Mabel through the kitchen and down a narrow corridor that had been sealed since the mansion’s renovation.
Mrs. Mabel removed a key from beneath her collar.
“You lied to me,” Spencer said.
“I was trying to protect her.”
“Protect whom?”
Mrs. Mabel unlocked the final door.
The room beyond it contained a bed, medical supplies, empty water bottles, and a bloodstained coat.
But no woman.
The window was open.
Rainwater covered the floor.
“She was here,” Mrs. Mabel whispered.
“Who?”
“Jocelyn Cooper.”
Spencer grabbed her by the shoulders.
“You hid Dexter’s mother inside my house?”
“She came to the back gate two nights ago. She had cuts on her face and bruises around her throat. She said people connected to the clinic were hunting her.”
“Why didn’t you call me?”
“She begged me not to trust anyone with a Warren name.”
The words struck Spencer harder than he expected.
Mrs. Mabel explained that Jocelyn had awakened after giving birth and overheard Nolan speaking with a nurse. Nolan planned to remove Dexter from the clinic and make Jocelyn’s death appear to be a complication from childbirth.
Jocelyn escaped through a service elevator.
She tried to reach Spencer but was intercepted near the mansion wall. Nolan attacked her and took Dexter.
Jocelyn believed Nolan would kill the baby.
Mrs. Mabel found her hours later.
“The bracelet fell from her wrist when I cleaned her wounds,” Mrs. Mabel said. “The sedatives were prescribed by the emergency doctor. The trash bags are used for the garden waste.”
“Why did she scream?”
“I don’t know.”
Charlee stepped into the room.
She pointed toward the floor.
“There are footprints.”
The wet prints led from the window to a second door hidden behind an old cabinet.
Spencer opened it.
A tunnel descended beneath the mansion.
The Warren estate had been constructed during Prohibition. His grandfather used underground passages to move alcohol and cash without attracting attention.
Someone had used those passages to reach Jocelyn.
Nathan called from the library.
“You need to see what I found.”
They returned upstairs.
Nathan displayed scanned financial records across a large screen. Over the past six years, nearly eighty million dollars had disappeared from Warren Foundation accounts.
The money had been transferred through shell companies controlled by Nolan Price.
Every transaction had been approved by Adrian Warren.
“Dexter’s birth changed something,” Nathan explained. “According to the family trust, if you die without a direct heir, Adrian receives temporary control of your voting shares.”
“But Dexter prevents that.”
“Yes. And Charlee’s claim creates another problem. If the missing trust is restored, Adrian’s branch loses twenty-five percent of the company.”
Charlee looked confused.
“Does that mean he doesn’t want us to be family?”
Spencer crouched in front of her.
“It means he’s afraid of the truth.”
Pamela was found shortly before dawn in the parking garage beneath her clinic.
She was unconscious but alive.
One of the police officers had been injured. The other admitted that Nolan had paid him to abandon Pamela during the search.
When Pamela regained consciousness, she told detectives that Adrian had visited the fertility clinic ten months earlier during an investment review.
He discovered what Pamela had done.
Instead of reporting her, he blackmailed her.
“He forced me to give him copies of every record,” Pamela confessed. “He said if I refused, he would destroy the clinic and send me to prison.”
“You should have told me,” Spencer said.
“I was ashamed.”
Pamela revealed that Jocelyn had never known Spencer was the donor. Pamela had falsely claimed the genetic material came from an anonymous, legally approved source.
After Dexter’s birth, Pamela planned to confess everything.
Adrian moved first.
He sent Nolan to seize the child and eliminate anyone who could prove Spencer had an heir.
Casey contacted child protection officials and arranged emergency guards for Dexter and Charlee.
Spencer refused to remove the children from the mansion.
“This is their home,” he said. “Adrian is the one leaving.”
But Adrian had already acted.
At nine that morning, three police vehicles stopped outside the gates.
An officer presented Spencer with a temporary court order.
Adrian had filed an emergency petition accusing Spencer of abducting Dexter, intimidating Pamela, and hiding Charlee from child welfare authorities.
The petition described Spencer as mentally unstable and obsessed with creating an heir.
News vans appeared behind the police.
Someone had leaked the story to every major network.
Casey read the court documents.
“This is designed to remove the children from your custody before the DNA evidence can be formally admitted.”
Spencer called Nathan.
His attorney did not answer.
Instead, Spencer received a photograph from an unknown number.
Nathan was tied to a chair.
Florence sat beside him, still wearing her hospital gown.
A message appeared beneath the photograph.
Give Adrian control of Warren Industries by midnight, or the old woman and your attorney disappear forever.
Spencer stared at the image.
Charlee came to stand beside him.
Her eyes locked on the corner of the photograph.
“I know that building,” she whispered.

“It’s where my mommy went the night she never came home.”
