PART 3 — The Guest Who Knew Everything

Every guest turned.

Lily’s tiny finger was pointing at Daniel’s best man.

Marcus.

Daniel’s closest friend for over twenty years.

The man who had stood beside him through Emily’s disappearance.

The man who told Daniel, again and again, that Emily had left him.

Marcus forced a smile.

“Daniel, come on. She’s a child. She’s scared.”

But Daniel didn’t blink.

“You told me Emily ran away.”

Marcus swallowed.

“She did.”

Lily shook her head violently.

“No. Mommy cried your name that night.”

The garden turned ice cold.

Daniel stepped closer to Marcus.

“What night?”

Lily buried her face against Daniel’s shoulder.

“The night Mommy found the papers.”

Isabella’s knees nearly gave out.

Marcus whispered, “Stop talking.”

Daniel heard him.

Slowly, he turned back to Isabella.

“What papers?”

No answer.

Only silence.

Then one of the older wedding guests suddenly stood up.

It was Daniel’s former housekeeper, Mrs. Walker.

Her eyes were full of tears.

“I’m sorry, Mr. Caldwell,” she said. “I was paid to stay quiet.”

Daniel’s face hardened.

“Paid by who?”

Mrs. Walker looked at Isabella.

Then at Marcus.

“The night your wife disappeared… she had discovered they were stealing from your company.”

A wave of shock moved through the guests.

Isabella grabbed the edge of the altar, her perfect bridal image collapsing second by second.

Daniel looked at Marcus.

“My wife didn’t leave me.”

Marcus said nothing.

Daniel’s voice broke for the first time.

“You made me hate her.”

Lily suddenly lifted her head.

“Daddy…”

Daniel looked down.

“What is it, sweetheart?”

Lily pointed toward the dark entrance gate.

“Mommy is not gone.”

Everyone stopped breathing.

Daniel turned slowly.

Beyond the golden wedding lights…

A thin woman in a hospital coat stood at the gate.

Her face was pale.

Her body weak.

But her eyes never left Daniel.

And then she whispered:

“Daniel… I tried to come back.”
