Chapter 6 - THE CHILD WHO KNEW THE SECRET HALLWAY

Lorenzo looked at Sarah.
Not the men.
Not Matteo.
Sarah.
Her face was pale, but she shook her head once.
Don't.
Whatever Matteo expected him to do, don't.
“How?” Lorenzo asked.
Matteo smiled.
“Samuel was not the only man Daniel trusted.”
Lorenzo felt his stomach turn.
Another breach.
The family business had always celebrated loyalty as though loyalty were genetic.
It was not.
It was a system.
And his system was rotten.
Matteo held up the phone.
On-screen, Lucas sat on the rehabilitation-room bed.
Emma stood near the door.
No adults visible.
“Where is Mara?”
“Distracted.”
“Daniel?”
“Also distracted.”
“What do you want?”
“The trust.”
“You can't activate it while Lucas lives.”
Matteo's smile became colder.
“Exactly.”
Sarah's eyes closed.
Lorenzo's body became still.
Every violent instinct returned at once.
But Matteo had planned for that.
If Lorenzo moved wrong, the children paid.
“Release Sarah.”
“No.”
“She isn't part of this.”
“Neither was Vivian until her brother became useful.”
Sarah looked disgusted.
“You don't love anyone, do you?”
Matteo turned toward her.
“Love is expensive.”
“No.”
She looked at him.
“Cowardice is.”
One guard tightened his grip on her.
Lorenzo's eyes went black.
Matteo raised a hand.
“Not yet.”
Then the phone feed moved.
Emma.
The three-year-old had climbed off the chair.
She walked toward a wall.
Matteo frowned.
“What is she doing?”
Lorenzo stared.
Emma touched a wooden panel beside the closet.
Then disappeared.
The screen showed empty room.
Matteo swore.
“What happened?”
Lorenzo almost smiled.
The rehabilitation residence belonged to an old family property trust.
It had been renovated from a Duca guesthouse built before modern security codes.
There was one service passage.
Narrow.
Hidden behind closet panels.
Lorenzo had shown it to Lucas as a game two days earlier.
Lucas had shown Emma.
Of course he had.
Matteo called someone.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Then Lucas disappeared from the room too.
Matteo's face changed.
Lorenzo heard sirens in the distance.
Matteo looked toward the chapel doors.
“You called them.”
“You noticed late.”
Matteo grabbed Sarah and pulled her backward.
Lorenzo moved.
One of the men reached inside his coat.
Police shouted outside.
The chapel exploded into motion.
Lorenzo did not attack.
Not the way Matteo expected.
He stepped back.
Hands visible.
Let law enforcement enter.
Let witnesses see.
Let Matteo choose his own destruction.
Sarah dropped low as the man holding her looked toward the doors.
An officer grabbed him.
The second guard surrendered.
Matteo ran toward the side exit.
Lorenzo followed only far enough to see him stopped by three officers outside.
For one brief moment, uncle and nephew stared at each other across the rain.
Matteo screamed:
“You think this makes you clean?”
Lorenzo said nothing.
“You are still a Duca!”
That sentence would once have sounded like identity.
Now it sounded like a threat.
Lorenzo answered:
“Not the kind you wanted.”
Then he turned away.
Sarah was outside with Daniel.
Her wrists were red.
Lorenzo crossed toward her.
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
He looked at the marks.
“You're lying.”
“Bruised.”
“Hospital.”
“Children first.”
Of course.
The rehabilitation residence was twenty minutes away.
They arrived to find Lucas and Emma sitting inside the laundry service corridor with Mara.
Emma held a flashlight.
Lucas held two pudding cups.
Lorenzo stared.
“Where did those come from?”
Lucas shrugged.
“Kitchen.”
Mara looked furious.
“They escaped a potential kidnapping and raided the refrigerator.”
Emma pointed at Lucas.
“He needed snack.”
Lorenzo dropped to his knees.
Lucas ran into him.
For several seconds, Lorenzo could not speak.
His son felt warm.
Alive.
Real.
Emma waited.
Then Lorenzo opened one arm.
She joined the hug.
Sarah stopped in the doorway.
Something changed in her face.
Not romance.
Not yet.
Something quieter.
Trust.
Later, investigators reconstructed what happened.
Matteo's remaining operative had entered using falsified medical credentials.
He diverted staff with a fake emergency alarm.
But before he reached Lucas's room, Emma recognized the man.
Not his face.
His shoes.
Shiny black shoes like the man she once saw near the estate.
She told Lucas:
“Bad shoes.”
That was enough.
They used the service passage.
Mara found them minutes later after Daniel restored communication.
Emma's tiny observations had saved Lucas twice.
First with the pillow.
Then with the hallway.
Matteo was charged with conspiracy, attempted murder, kidnapping, medical fraud, and multiple financial crimes.
Dr. Bell agreed to testify.
Vivian did too.
So did Samuel.
And then came the truth about Elena.
It was not what Lorenzo feared.
Matteo had not caused her cancer.
But he had interfered after diagnosis.
Elena had discovered suspicious trust changes and intended to take Lucas away.
Matteo had pressured a physician to downplay an experimental treatment option so she would remain weak and dependent.
Would the treatment have saved her?
No one could know.
That uncertainty became another thing Lorenzo had to live with.
He sat alone in the hospital chapel after hearing it.
Sarah found him there.
“You don't have to sit with me,” he said.
“I know.”
She sat anyway.
“I failed her.”
“Maybe.”
He looked at her.
“That's your comforting answer?”
“I learned from you.”
Despite everything, he laughed.
Then she became serious.
“You may have failed to hear her. That isn't the same as causing what Matteo did.”
“I built the environment.”
“Yes.”
He looked down.
“You're supposed to tell me I’m innocent.”
“No.”
Sarah's voice softened.
“You're supposed to decide what you do next.”
That was harder.
And more useful.
Lorenzo looked toward the chapel doors.
“What if I leave all of it?”
“The business?”
“The organization.”
Sarah stared.
“Can you?”
“Not overnight.”
“Then don't make promises you can't keep.”
He nodded.
“Legal businesses first. Sell what can't survive daylight.”
Sarah's eyes warmed.
“That sounds like a start.”
Three weeks later, Lucas walked out of the hospital.
Not carried.
Walked.
Slowly.
Holding Lorenzo's hand on one side.
Emma's on the other.
Reporters waited outside the gates.
Lorenzo ignored them.
Lucas looked up.
“Papa?”
“Yes?”
“Can Emma live with us forever?”
Lorenzo looked toward Sarah.
She nearly choked.
Emma answered for everyone.
“Yes.”
Sarah covered her face.
Lorenzo laughed.
For the first time in years, the sound did not frighten anyone.
But the trial had not begun yet.
And one final secret remained inside Matteo's files.
A legal document signed by Elena Duca six days before her death.
A document naming someone else as Lucas's emergency guardian if anything ever happened to Lorenzo.
Not Matteo.
Not Sofia.
Not anyone in the Duca family.
The name on the page was:
Sarah Carter.
May you like
And Sarah had never seen the document in her life.
