Part 2: The Secret Ethan Had Been Hiding
The masked stranger stared at Laura for one frozen second.
Then he bolted.
The man lunged toward the nursery window, knocking over a lamp as he moved. Glass shattered across the floor.
"Police are on their way!" Laura screamed.
The stranger hesitated, realizing there was no easy escape. Within moments, flashing lights illuminated the front yard.
The man tried to flee through the hallway but found himself face-to-face with Ethan.
For a thirteen-year-old boy, Ethan looked remarkably calm.
"You won't get away," he said quietly.
The stranger shoved past him, but officers were already storming through the front door.
"Police! Get on the ground!"
Seconds later, the intruder was handcuffed and dragged outside.
Only then did Laura's shaking legs finally give out.
She collapsed into a chair beside Emma's crib.
Her daughter was unharmed.
Safe.
Crying softly but safe.
Laura wrapped Emma in a blanket and held her tightly while officers searched the house.
An hour later, one detective returned with a serious expression.
"Mrs. Miller, we found surveillance photos on the suspect's phone."
Laura's stomach dropped.
"What kind of photos?"
The detective hesitated.
"Pictures of your house. Pictures of your daughter. Pictures taken over several days."
The room spun.
"Several days?"
The detective nodded.
"He'd been watching your family."
Laura looked toward Ethan.
Her son sat quietly on the couch, staring at the floor.
The detective noticed.
"Actually," he said, "your son may have saved your daughter's life tonight."
Laura frowned.
"What do you mean?"
The detective sat down.
"Ethan told us something very important."
For the first time all night, Ethan looked up.
His eyes were filled with guilt.
"I should've told you sooner, Mom."
"Told me what?"
Ethan swallowed hard.
"Three days ago, I saw that man."
The room went silent.
Laura's heart nearly stopped.
"You what?"
"I saw him standing across the street watching the house."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Tears formed in Ethan's eyes.
"Because I thought maybe I was imagining it."
He wiped his face.
"Then I saw him again the next day."
Laura felt sick.
"And tonight?"
Ethan nodded.
"I saw someone near the nursery window after dinner."
"Why didn't you call me immediately?"
His voice cracked.
"I didn't want you to think I was being paranoid."
Laura stared at him.
The exhaustion.
The sleepless nights.
The hours spent sitting outside Emma's room.
Everything suddenly made sense.
Her son hadn't been obsessed.
He'd been scared.
And he'd been protecting his sister the only way he knew how.
Laura pulled him into a hug.
"You should have told me."
"I know."
"You never have to carry something like that alone."

For the first time in days, Ethan finally broke down crying.
And Laura held both of her children as dawn slowly approached.
