Chapter 5 - THE SECRET ADRIAN NEVER TOLD ME

I left the Lancaster at 9:32.
Adrian was waiting outside.
I walked straight past him.
“Claire.”
I kept moving.
“Claire.”
He caught up.
“Stop.”
I turned.
“Did you know me before Blackwell & Reed?”
His face changed.
There.
That was enough.
“Oh my God.”
“Let me explain.”
“That is the answer men give immediately before making things worse.”
He looked toward Caleb.
“Take the car.”
Caleb left.
We stood beneath the hotel awning while taxis blurred through rain.
“Talk.”
Adrian exhaled.
“My father knew Daniel’s father.”
“How?”
“They were business partners briefly.”
“My father?”
“No. Daniel’s.”
I folded my arms.
“Continue.”
“Mercer Development owned property Kane Global wanted for a Midtown project.”
“So?”
“Daniel’s father was in financial trouble.”
“What does that have to do with me?”
“He asked my father to invest.”
“And?”
“My father refused.”
I waited.
Adrian looked almost ashamed.
“Then Daniel’s father offered information.”
“About what?”
“About Daniel.”
My stomach tightened.
“He told my father his son had gotten a woman pregnant.”
“Me.”
“Yes.”
“And your father paid him seventy-five thousand dollars?”
“No.”
He hesitated.
“My father paid Daniel.”
I stopped breathing.
“What?”
“To leave.”
The city disappeared.
Adrian continued quickly.
“My father was trying to protect a deal. Daniel had been quietly supplying competitor intelligence between developers. He was unreliable. My father wanted him out of New York for twelve months while negotiations closed.”
“And he paid the father of my child to abandon me.”
“Not exactly.”
“Do not use nuance right now.”
Adrian nodded.
“Daniel accepted the money.”
I stared at him.
“Did your father know I was pregnant?”
“Yes.”
The betrayal felt strange because his father had died four years earlier.
A dead man had reached across time and touched my life.
“What did you do?”
“I found out later.”
“When?”
“After Mia was born.”
“How?”
“My father kept records.”
“Of course.”
Adrian looked at me.
“I was twenty-nine. I confronted him.”
“And?”
“He said Daniel was going to leave anyway.”
“So he made abandonment efficient.”
“Yes.”
“Did you tell me?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“I didn’t know you.”
“You knew enough to know I’d been left alone with a baby.”
His jaw tightened.
“Yes.”
“And then?”
“I started quietly tracking Daniel.”
I stared.
“You what?”
“Not you.”
“That is not comforting.”
“I wanted to know if he came back.”
“Why?”
“Because my father’s decision had affected you and Mia.”
“You felt guilty.”
“Yes.”
“And that’s why you bought Blackwell & Reed?”
“No.”
I laughed.
“Daniel says you knew who I was before my interview.”
“I did.”
“So?”
Adrian stepped closer.
“I bought Blackwell & Reed because I wanted the firm.”
“Did you interfere with my hiring?”
“No.”
“Did you approve it?”
“Yes.”
“That is interference-adjacent.”
His mouth almost moved.
Wrong time.
“Did you hire me because of what your father did?”
“No.”
“How am I supposed to believe that?”
“Because you were already the strongest candidate.”
I shook my head.
“You read my portfolio.”
“Yes.”
“Before the interview?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I knew your name.”
There it was.
My entire career suddenly felt contaminated.
Every promotion.
Every compliment.
Every room I had earned.
“Did you promote me?”
“No.”
“You sign off on director promotions.”
“I approved Lydia’s recommendation.”
“Would you have approved someone else?”
“Yes.”
“But how do I know?”
“You don’t.”
That hurt because it was honest.
He continued:
“I cannot undo the fact that my family’s money touched your life before you ever met me.”
“No.”
“I cannot make you trust your career history because I tell you to.”
“No.”
“But I can show you every record.”
I looked away.
“Why now?”
“Because Daniel forced it.”
“Exactly.”
That was the part that hurt most.
“You had six years.”
“I know.”
“You sat across from me for two years.”
“I know.”
“You watched me talk about being a single mother in leadership panels. You watched Mia come to the office today. You knew her father had been paid by your family to disappear.”
“Yes.”
“And you said nothing.”
“Yes.”
I stepped back.
“I need space.”
His face became still.
“All right.”
“Real space.”
“Yes.”
“No security following me home unless there is an active threat.”
He hesitated.
“Claire.”
“Adrian.”
He closed his eyes.
“Caleb will stay two blocks away.”
“Across the street?”
“Two blocks.”
“Fine.”
I went home.
For the first time since Mia was born, I cried in the shower so she would not hear.
The next week became a blur.
Daniel’s supervised-visitation hearing was scheduled.
Lydia resigned before she could be terminated.
Voss Creative denied knowledge of Daniel’s threats but suspended him.
Astor Crown paused the agency review because of the security breach.
Blackwell & Reed’s biggest pitch in five years might disappear because my ex had tried to steal it.
And Adrian gave me space.
Mostly.
He did not call outside work.
Did not appear at my office.
Did not ask about Mia.
That should have helped.
Instead, I noticed the absence.
At work, he became Mr. Kane again.
Cold.
Professional.
Controlled.
It hurt more than I expected.
Mia noticed too.
“Is Mr. Adrian mad at us?”
“No.”
“Then why doesn’t he visit?”
“He never visited before.”
“Yes he did.”
I frowned.
“When?”
She thought.
“Today.”
I stared.
“What?”
“He came to the school.”
My blood froze.
“Adrian?”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“Other Daddy.”
I stopped breathing.
“He came to your school?”
Mia nodded.
“He waved at recess.”
Every protective instinct inside me exploded.
“Did he talk to you?”
“No. Ms. Green came outside.”
I called the school immediately.
Daniel had appeared without authorization.
Security removed him.
Then he left before police arrived.
He had not broken the temporary court order because no order existed yet.
At 4:18, my phone rang.
Adrian.
I stared at it.
Answered.
“I know.”
Of course.
“Caleb called.”
“I told you two blocks.”
“He was two blocks away from your apartment. Not Mia’s school.”
I closed my eyes.
“I need help.”
The words were harder than they should have been.
Adrian did not sound triumphant.
“I’m coming.”
Ten minutes later, he was at my door.
Mia ran to him.
“Mr. Adrian!”
He caught her automatically when she jumped.
My heart did something deeply inconvenient.
Then Mia whispered into his ear.
Adrian’s expression changed.
“What did she say?” I asked.
He slowly set her down.
Mia looked guilty.
“What?”
Adrian looked at me.
“She says Daniel gave her something.”
My blood turned cold.
“When?”
“At school.”
Mia reached into Gerald’s back zipper.
I had never known the stuffed elephant had a zipper.
She pulled out a small black USB drive.
“He said Daddy needs Mommy to put this in her work computer.”
Adrian stared at it.
So did I.
Daniel had not gone to the school to see his daughter.
He had used her to carry something into Blackwell & Reed.
Adrian’s voice went dangerously quiet.
“Do not connect that to anything.”
“I wasn’t planning to.”
He called Caleb.
Thirty minutes later, our forensic team isolated the drive.
It contained malware designed to copy everything from my workstation.
Client files.
Internal emails.
Potentially acquisition information.
Daniel had tried to turn his six-year-old daughter into a corporate spy.

And this time, he had finally made the mistake that could destroy him.
