Chapter 6 - The Choice of a Mother

Sofia moved first.
Not me.
Not Marco.
Sofia.
She turned and shoved my mother’s arm aside just as the gun fired.
The bullet struck the chapel ceiling.
Stone cracked above us.
Grace screamed and ran forward.
Sofia handed Matteo to her with shaking hands.
“Go,” Sofia whispered.
Grace clutched our son against her chest and moved behind a stone pillar as Marco’s men surrounded the altar.
My mother stared at Sofia as if she had been betrayed.
“You weak little fool.”
Sofia looked back at her.
“No,” she said. “I’m done being afraid of you.”
My mother fired again.
This time, the bullet struck Sofia in the shoulder.
She fell hard against the chapel floor.
My rage became something ancient.
I raised my weapon toward my mother.
But Grace’s voice stopped me.
“Adrian.”
I looked at her.
She held Matteo close, one hand shielding his tiny head.
Her face was wet with tears.
But she shook her head.
Not because my mother deserved mercy.
Because Grace did not want our son’s first story to be written in blood.
My mother saw the hesitation.
She tried to run.
Marco tackled her before she reached the side door. The gun skidded across the stone floor. Two guards restrained her while she screamed my name, cursed Grace, cursed Matteo, cursed everyone who had turned against her.
I watched without moving.
Then I walked toward Sofia.
She was conscious, pale, and bleeding.
“Why?” I asked.
She laughed weakly.
“Because Grace was right.”
Marco called for the doctor.
Sofia looked toward my wife.
“I thought I wanted the family power,” she whispered. “But I was only trying to become important to someone who never loved me.”
Grace came closer, still carrying Matteo.
Sofia’s eyes filled when she looked at him.
“I’m sorry,” she said.
Grace did not forgive her immediately.
She did not pretend the damage was small.
But she said, “Tell the truth.”
Sofia nodded.
“I will.”
And she did.
Over the next weeks, Sofia gave investigators every document, every account number, every recording, every hidden transaction connected to my mother’s conspiracy. She admitted to helping conceal Grace’s imprisonment and confessed to providing the sedatives.
My mother was arrested.
The Rossi family council gathered in the great hall, expecting me to protect her because she was my blood.
Instead, I stood before them with Grace beside me.
My son slept in her arms.
“My mother committed crimes against my wife and child,” I said. “She used the Rossi name as a weapon. From this day forward, no one in this family will be protected by blood alone.”
Some men objected.
They said it would make us look weak.
They said the family could not survive public scandal.
They said tradition mattered.
Then Grace spoke.
Her voice was quiet.
But every person in the room listened.
“Tradition that requires women and children to suffer is not tradition,” she said. “It is cowardice dressed in expensive clothing.”
No one spoke after that.
The council voted.
My mother was stripped of all authority, removed from the estate, and turned over to the law. Her name remained Rossi, but she no longer had the power to hide behind it.
That night, I found Grace in the nursery.
Matteo slept peacefully in the crib.
The same crib where I had found her wedding ring.
Grace stood beside it, tracing one finger along the white railing.
“I hated this room,” she said.
“I know.”
“I used to come in here while you were away and talk to him. I would tell him about you.”
My throat tightened.
“What did you say?”
“That you were brave. That you would come home.”
I stepped behind her and wrapped my arms around her carefully.
“I almost didn’t.”
“But you did.”
“I cannot change what happened.”
“No.”
“But I will spend the rest of my life making sure you never doubt where you belong.”
Grace leaned back against me.
“Not in this estate,” she whispered.
I looked down at her.
“What?”
“Not under this roof. Too much happened here.”
She was right.
The Rossi estate had been my home all my life.
But a home was supposed to hold people safely.
Not bury them beneath its floors.
I kissed her hair.
May you like
“Then we leave.”
