Chapter 5 - CARMEN’S OFFER

“No.”
Alexander’s answer came so fast that Detective Hill had not even finished speaking.
Sofia, sitting beside me in the command vehicle, turned toward him.
“I want to hear what she says.”
“No.”
“Dad.”
“She assaulted you twenty-four hours ago.”
“And now police are surrounding the building.”
“She could still have a weapon.”
Hill spoke through the radio.
“We’ve cleared the church except for the room she’s in. No firearm visible. She’s sitting at a table.”
Alexander shook his head.
“Still no.”
Sofia looked at me.
I understood that expression.
She had inherited my stubbornness and her father’s refusal to retreat.
Terrible combination.
“Alexander,” I said quietly.
He stared at me.
“She gets to decide.”
His jaw tightened.
Sofia squeezed my hand.
“I’m done letting Carmen decide when I’m afraid.”
Alexander looked like every instinct inside him was screaming to lock the doors and drive away with her.
Instead, he closed his eyes briefly.
Then nodded.
“But you don’t enter without Hill.”
“I won’t.”
“And you wear a vest.”
“Fine.”
“And if anything feels wrong—”
“Dad.”
He stopped.
Sofia touched his arm.
“I know.”
Ten minutes later, she walked into the church wearing a protective vest beneath an oversized jacket.
I stood behind the police line with Alexander.
He did not blink until she disappeared through the doors.
Inside, Detective Hill kept his body between Sofia and Carmen.
The conversation was recorded.
We listened from outside.
Carmen sounded almost bored.
“You look better than I expected.”
Sofia’s voice hardened.
“You look worse.”
Alexander glanced at me.
I almost smiled.
Carmen laughed.
“So your father finally came running.”
“Why am I here?”
“Because I have something you want.”
“An apology?”
“No.”
“Then I doubt it.”
Carmen’s voice changed.
“I know where Daniel Vale is.”
Alexander stepped toward the command vehicle radio.
Hill raised his hand through the video feed, silently telling us to wait.
Sofia asked, “Why should I care?”
“Because your father does.”
“And what do you want?”
“The charges against Javier withdrawn.”
Sofia laughed.
Actually laughed.
Carmen went silent.
“You think this is funny?”
“I think you still believe you’re negotiating.”
“I am.”
“No. You’re hiding inside an abandoned church while police surround you.”
Carmen’s chair scraped.
Hill immediately ordered her to sit.
She did.
Then she said, “Your husband loves you.”
Sofia’s voice dropped.
“He stood outside a locked door while you hit me.”
“He was raised to obey his family.”
“And I was raised to know that isn’t love.”
For several seconds, no one spoke.
Then Carmen abandoned the performance.
“Your condo was supposed to solve a problem.”
“What problem?”
“Debt.”
“What kind?”
“The kind people like you don’t survive.”
Alexander leaned toward the speaker.
Carmen continued.
“Arturo built too fast. Borrowed too much. When he died, he left obligations behind.”
“To whom?”
“That is not your concern.”
“It became my concern when you attacked me.”
Carmen sighed.
“Your condo was collateral.”
“For what?”
“A loan.”
“That doesn’t make sense.”
“It doesn’t need to make sense to you.”
Sofia’s voice sharpened.
“Then why marry me? Why not steal from someone else?”
Carmen paused.
When she answered, every hair on my arms rose.
“Because of your father.”
Alexander became still.
Sofia asked, “What about him?”
“Alexander Vale cost my husband almost everything.”
“So you targeted me for revenge?”
“At first.”
At first.
Two dangerous words.
Carmen continued.
“Then we learned your property was valuable enough to satisfy part of the debt.”
“And Javier?”
“Javier knew what was expected.”
Sofia’s face appeared on the monitor.
She looked as if she had been struck again.
“He never loved me.”
Carmen’s voice softened almost convincingly.
“Not at first.”
Sofia swallowed.
“What does that mean?”
“It means my son made a mistake.”
“What mistake?”
“He fell in love with you.”
Alexander scoffed.
Carmen heard it through some sound from the room.
“Yes, Alexander. I know you’re listening.”
She looked directly at the police camera.
“Your daughter changed him.”
Sofia leaned forward.
“Then why did he let you hurt me?”
“Because he is weak.”
The answer came without hesitation.
Carmen continued.
“And weak men can love someone while still destroying them.”
That sentence silenced everyone.
Sofia stood.
“We’re done.”
Carmen panicked.
“Wait.”
Sofia stopped.
“Daniel.”
Alexander’s hand gripped the table.
Carmen lowered her voice.
“He never worked for us.”
“What?”
“He pretended.”
Sofia turned around.
“Explain.”
“Daniel came back eight years ago.”
Alexander whispered, “Eight?”
“He had been hiding.”
“From you?”
“From everyone.”
“Why?”
“Because the people behind Arturo believed Daniel had copies of the old records.”
Carmen leaned forward.
“He approached me after Arturo died. Told me he wanted money. Revenge against Alexander. I believed him.”
Alexander stared at the screen.
“But he was gathering evidence.”
Carmen smiled bitterly.
“For years.”
“Where is he?”
“I don’t know anymore.”
Sofia narrowed her eyes.
“You just said you did.”
“I lied.”
Hill stepped closer.
Carmen continued quickly.
“But I know what he was trying to find.”
“What?”
“A ledger.”
Alexander exhaled sharply.
“What ledger?”
“A complete record of the properties, companies, payments, judges, attorneys, and politicians Arturo paid.”
Thomas, listening from another vehicle, immediately said, “That could collapse their entire network.”
Carmen heard nothing outside.
She kept talking.
“Daniel believed the ledger could protect him.”
“Did he find it?” Sofia asked.
“I think so.”
“Why?”
“Because three nights ago, he told me the family was finished.”
Alexander whispered, “Then why was he at the wedding?”
Carmen answered almost as if she heard him.
“He came for you.”
Sofia froze.
“What?”
“Daniel learned what Javier planned.”
“He could have stopped it.”
“Yes.”
“Then why didn’t he?”
Carmen looked down for the first time.
“Because he didn’t know I was going to hurt you.”
That distinction did not comfort me.
“He thought the plan was only to obtain your signature through fraud. He intended to gather proof.”
Sofia’s voice broke.
“So I was bait.”
“No.”
Carmen hesitated.
Then corrected herself.
“Yes.”
Alexander stepped away from the monitor.
I saw guilt tear across his face.
His brother had allowed Sofia to enter danger to catch the Robles family.
A different version of the same disease.
Men deciding the people they loved could be sacrificed for a greater purpose.
Inside the church, Sofia spoke quietly.
“You’re all the same.”
Carmen frowned.
“What?”
“You. Javier. Daniel. Maybe even my father.”
Alexander flinched.
“You all decide what other people should survive for your plans.”
Carmen looked away.
Sofia continued.
“You wanted my condo. Javier wanted his family’s approval. Daniel wanted evidence. My father wanted to protect me without speaking to me.”
Her voice steadied.
“And none of you asked what I wanted.”
She walked toward the door.
Carmen called after her.
“Sofia!”
She stopped again.
“If you leave, you’ll never find Daniel.”
Sofia turned.
“I hope he finds himself.”
Then she walked out.
Alexander was waiting outside.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then he opened his arms.
But he did not step forward.
He waited.
Sofia made the choice.
She walked into them.
Alexander held her carefully.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered.
She closed her eyes.
“For which part?”
“All of it.”
Police arrested Carmen minutes later on charges connected to Sofia’s assault, coercion, fraudulent documents, and suspected conspiracy.
Javier remained in custody.
By the following day, Robles Holdings stock in several private ventures collapsed.
Business partners began distancing themselves.
Former employees called police.
Then former daughters-in-law.
One woman from Houston told investigators Carmen had pressured her to sign away a ranch inherited from her father.
Another described being locked inside a bedroom for hours until she agreed to transfer a commercial property.
The case was growing.
For the first time, Sofia’s experience looked less like an isolated nightmare and more like the crack that might expose an entire criminal system.
But Daniel was still missing.
Then Thomas arrived at my apartment carrying an old leather file.
“I found this inside an archive from Alexander’s original investigation.”
Alexander looked confused.
“What archive?”
“The files Daniel gave you before he disappeared.”
Thomas placed a photograph on the table.
It showed Arturo Robles outside a warehouse with several men.
One was Victor Salazar.
One was a banker now serving in the Texas legislature.
And one was standing partially behind a truck.
Alexander picked up the photograph.
His face changed.
“That’s impossible.”
I leaned closer.
The man was younger in the photograph.
But I recognized him.
Detective Marcus Hill.
The officer currently leading Sofia’s case.
Alexander immediately called Rachel.
No answer.
He called again.
Nothing.
Then Sofia’s phone buzzed.
A message from Hill.
I FOUND DANIEL.
COME TO THE STATION.
ALONE.
Alexander looked at us.
“That isn’t Hill.”
Sofia’s face drained of color.
“How do you know?”
“Because Hill knows you would never come alone.”
Another text arrived.
This time a photograph.
Rachel Boone.
Tied to a chair.
Behind her stood Daniel Vale.
And beside Daniel was Detective Hill.
The final message contained only one sentence.
