Chapter 5 - THE WOMAN BEHIND THE LIE

By sunrise, the story was everywhere.
BILLIONAIRE LUCA MORETTI HAS SECRET TWINS.
EX-WIFE HID CHILDREN FOR SIX YEARS.
WHO IS NIA CARTER?
I discovered the headlines when three photographers were waiting outside my apartment building.
Ava screamed when one camera flashed through the lobby glass.
That was enough.
I turned around, pushed both children toward the elevator, and called Luca.
He answered on the first ring.
“What happened?”
“How did the press find out?”
Silence.
Then his voice changed.
“They’re outside?”
“Yes.”
“How many?”
“At least three.”
“Stay inside.”
“Don’t give me orders.”
“Nia, I’m not ordering you. I’m sending security.”
“No Moretti circus.”
“They frightened Ava.”
That stopped me.
His voice was quiet now.
“Please let me protect them from this.”
I looked at my daughter.
Ava was pretending to be fine.
She always did that when scared.
“Fine.”
Within fifteen minutes, two plainclothes security professionals entered the building through the underground garage.
No black SUVs.
No obvious bodyguards.
Luca had listened.
An hour later, another headline appeared.
SOURCES CLAIM CARTER DEMANDED FINANCIAL SUPPORT FROM BILLIONAIRE EX.
My stomach turned.
I had never taken a cent.
Then someone released an old photograph of me entering Teresa Moretti’s attorney’s office while pregnant.
The caption suggested I had been negotiating money.
That was when I understood.
This wasn’t gossip.
It was a campaign.
At ten thirty, Luca walked into my apartment.
He looked furious.
“Your mother?”
“I can’t prove it yet.”
“Then who?”
“Malcolm.”
I crossed my arms.
“Same machine.”
“Yes.”
He didn’t argue.
His phone rang constantly.
Board members.
Public relations.
Attorneys.
He ignored them all until I said, “Answer it.”
“I’m staying here.”
“You staying here creates more headlines.”
“I don’t care about headlines.”
“I do. My children go to school.”
That landed.
He stepped into the hallway and made one call.
Within an hour, Moretti Global issued a statement.
It was only four sentences.
The children are mine.
Nia Carter made repeated documented attempts to contact me after our divorce.
Those attempts were wrongfully intercepted without my knowledge.
Any suggestion that Ms. Carter concealed our children for financial advantage is false, defamatory, and will be addressed accordingly.
The internet exploded.
For once, in my favor.
But Teresa was not finished.
That afternoon, Evelyn arrived.
I stared through the peephole before opening the door.
“What are you doing here?”
“Helping.”
“With what?”
She held up a flash drive.
“Destroying my mother-in-law.”
I stared at her.
Evelyn gave me a tired smile.
“Figuratively.”
I stepped aside.
Luca came from the kitchen and stopped.
“Evelyn?”
She looked at him.
There was no anger between them.
That somehow made what came next sadder.
“I filed for divorce this morning.”
Luca’s face tightened.
“Nia, can you give us—”
“No,” Evelyn said. “She should hear this.”
I stiffened.
Evelyn sat.
“Our marriage was arranged without either of us admitting it was arranged.”
Luca looked down.
“My father wanted access to Moretti infrastructure. Teresa wanted Shaw capital. And you wanted something quiet after Nia.”
“That isn’t fair.”
“It’s completely fair.”
He didn’t argue again.
Evelyn looked at me.
“I knew he still loved you.”
I nearly laughed.
“He divorced me.”
“Yes.”
“And then spent six years refusing to say your name.”
My eyes moved toward Luca.
He looked uncomfortable.
Evelyn continued.
“You were the ghost in every room we lived in.”
“That isn’t something I wanted.”
“I know.”
Her voice softened.
“I’m not blaming you.”
She placed the flash drive on the table.
“This is why I came.”
“What is it?” Luca asked.
“Teresa’s foundation archives.”
His eyes narrowed.
Evelyn’s father had been a trustee.
She had access.
“I downloaded them before she locked me out.”
Luca inserted the drive into my laptop.
There were hundreds of files.
Payments.
Emails.
Memos.
Then one document appeared.
SUBJECT: VALE CONSULTATION.
Malcolm Price to Teresa.
The revised assessment is attached. Patient-facing language has been adjusted to support anticipated incompatibility concerns. L.M. should continue to receive no direct indication of his own normal fertility profile.
My hands went cold.
Luca read it twice.
Then another email.
T.M. to Malcolm.
If Carter becomes pregnant after separation, all communication goes through us. Luca cannot know until the Shaw agreement is irreversible.
I stopped breathing.
Evelyn whispered, “Oh my God.”
Luca didn’t move.
I opened the next message.
Malcolm:
Carter confirmed pregnancy today. She believes she is approximately six weeks along.
Teresa:
Handle it.
That was it.
Two words.
Handle it.
My entire life had changed because a wealthy woman had typed two words.
I stood so suddenly the chair fell backward.
“Nia.”
“I need air.”
Luca followed me to the balcony.
The February cold hit like a slap.
I gripped the railing.
“They knew.”
“Yes.”
“All those months I thought…”
My voice broke.
Luca stood several feet away.
I hated that he knew me well enough to understand I didn’t want to be touched.
“I thought maybe you hated me.”
He closed his eyes.
“I never hated you.”
“That almost makes it worse.”
“I know.”
“I gave birth thinking you knew.”
His eyes opened.
“I know.”
“I was in labor for nineteen hours.”
His face tightened.
“Noah’s heart rate dropped. They rushed me into surgery. My mother was there, but I kept thinking—”
I stopped.
Luca’s voice was barely audible.
“Thinking what?”
“That if something happened to me, you’d come for them.”
He turned away.
His shoulders shook once.
Luca covered his face.
I had seen him angry.
Cold.
Victorious.
I had never seen him cry.
“I would have been there,” he said.
The words broke apart.
“I know you don’t believe me. But if I had known, I would have been there.”
I believed him.
That was the tragedy.
Before I could answer, Evelyn opened the balcony door.
“You both need to see this.”
She held up her phone.
Another headline had appeared.
MORETTI MATRIARCH SEEKS EMERGENCY REVIEW OF SECRET CHILDREN’S WELFARE.
I stared.
“She did what?”
Luca took the phone.
Teresa had filed a petition claiming the sudden media exposure and unresolved paternity issues created concern for the twins’ welfare.
It was legally weak.
But it was public.
And cruel.
Luca’s face became terrifyingly calm.
“She wants a custody fight?”
“She can’t get custody,” Evelyn said.
“No.”
He handed back the phone.
“But she can drag Nia through court.”
I looked at him.
“What are you going to do?”
Luca reached for his phone.
“Something I should have done six years ago.”
“Which is?”
“Choose you before the empire.”
That afternoon, Luca Moretti called an emergency press conference.
He stood before fifty cameras.
No lawyer beside him.
No prepared statement.
“My mother’s petition is without my consent,” he said. “Nia Carter is an extraordinary mother. Any attempt to question her parenting is an attack on my children.”
Reporters shouted.
Luca continued.
“I also have reason to believe employees and representatives connected to my family interfered with private medical information and communications during my first marriage. I have referred the matter to independent counsel.”
The room erupted.
Then he said the sentence that sent Moretti Global stock falling before the market closed.
“Until the investigation is complete, I am stepping aside as chief executive.”
Across town, Teresa watched the broadcast.

For the first time in decades, she lost control.
She picked up a crystal glass and threw it at the wall.
