Chapter 5 - THE WOMAN THEY CALLED UNFIT

Clara called Ethan at 6:46 p.m.

He answered before the first ring finished.

"What happened?"

"Your mother."

His stomach dropped.

"What did she do?"

"Her attorney just called me."

Ethan stood from his desk.

"They're filing something regarding the children."

"What?"

"They're going to say I'm financially unfit."

His expression became murderous.

"Stay home."

"No."

"Clara."

"Do not start ordering me around."

"I'm not ordering you. I'm telling you I'm coming."

"I don't want..."

"I know."

His voice softened.

"But this is my family attacking you because of me."

Clara fell silent.

"I'll be there in fifteen minutes."

He made it in eleven.

She was waiting downstairs.

Sophie and Noah were upstairs with Mrs. Alvarez, their neighbor.

Clara held a legal envelope.

"They had someone deliver this."

Ethan opened it.

Emergency petition.

Concerns regarding housing stability.

Financial hardship.

Alleged concealment of paternity.

Potential mismanagement of assets belonging to minor heirs.

Ethan's eyes darkened.

"They're using your poverty against you."

"My poverty."

Clara's voice cracked.

"There it is."

He looked up.

"You think I don't know what I am now?"

"Clara."

"I know what your lawyers will see. Tiny apartment. No car. Unstable income. Past-due electric bill."

"I didn't say any of that."

"You didn't have to."

Ethan stepped closer.

"You are not losing those children."

Her eyes flashed.

"They are not those children. They're Sophie and Noah."

"You're right."

"And you don't get to promise me anything."

"You're right."

The agreement stopped her.

Ethan lowered the documents.

"I spent five years believing success meant controlling every variable."

He looked toward the upstairs window.

"I can't control this. But I can stand beside you."

"I don't need your money."

"I'm not offering money."

"What are you offering?"

"My name."

She laughed bitterly.

"That name is why we're in trouble."

"Then I'll put it where it belongs."

The hearing took place the next morning.

Victoria's attorneys arrived with a team of five.

Clara arrived with one legal-aid lawyer and a handbag containing crackers for the twins.

Ethan walked in two minutes later.

Cameras waited outside.

The story had leaked overnight.

SECRET HAYES HEIRS DISCOVERED AFTER FIVE YEARS.

MILLIONAIRE DEVELOPER'S EX-WIFE ACCUSED OF HIDING TWINS.

Clara saw the headlines on reporters' phones.

Her face burned.

Ethan saw them too.

His jaw tightened.

Inside the courtroom, Victoria sat behind her attorneys.

She did not look at Clara.

The judge reviewed the petition.

Victoria's lawyer rose.

"Your Honor, the children's financial interests are extraordinary. Their mother currently faces housing displacement, has inconsistent employment, and failed to disclose their existence to Mr. Hayes for nearly five years."

Clara's lawyer stood.

"That characterization is false."

"We have documents."

"So do we."

Victoria's attorney smiled.

Then Ethan rose.

His lawyer grabbed his arm.

"What are you doing?"

"Fixing one thing."

"Ethan, sit down."

He walked toward the front.

The judge frowned.

"Mr. Hayes?"

"I need to address something."

"You will have an opportunity."

"This petition was filed supposedly to protect my children."

Victoria's eyes narrowed.

Ethan continued.

"I oppose it."

A murmur moved through the courtroom.

Reporters outside would have loved to hear it.

The judge lifted one eyebrow.

"Your counsel filed a related notice this morning."

"My counsel didn't."

He looked at Victoria's legal team.

"My mother's did."

Victoria stood.

"Ethan."

"No."

One word.

Years of control ended inside it.

He faced the judge.

"Clara Riley did not hide my children from me."

Clara stared at him.

"My family hid them from me."

The room went silent.

His attorney whispered his name.

Ethan ignored him.

"I have confirmed at least forty-seven attempts by Ms. Riley to notify me or my representatives during the pregnancy and after the birth."

Victoria's lawyer jumped up.

"Your Honor, these allegations are unverified."

"They're being verified now."

Ethan's voice remained calm.

"Until yesterday, I believed Clara left because our marriage had failed. I now know she was pregnant with children I told her, during an argument, I didn't want."

His voice caught slightly.

He did not hide it.

"I said something cruel. She believed me. Then people around me made certain she continued believing me."

Clara's eyes filled.

The judge leaned forward.

"Mr. Hayes, are you asking for custody?"

Ethan looked at Clara.

Then at Sophie and Noah sitting with Mrs. Alvarez in the back.

"No."

Victoria looked stunned.

"I am asking for the right to know them."

He swallowed.

"If their mother permits it."

Clara blinked.

"And I'm asking the court to dismiss any suggestion that financial hardship makes Clara unfit."

He turned toward Victoria's attorneys.

"If money were the measure of parenting, I would be the most qualified father in California."

His voice lowered.

"But I didn't know my son's favorite dinosaur until yesterday."

Noah whispered loudly from the back.

"Triceratops."

Several people smiled.

Ethan almost did.

"I didn't know my daughter's favorite color."

"Yellow," Sophie whispered.

Ethan nodded.

"Yellow."

Then he looked at the judge.

"Clara knew all of it."

The judge removed her glasses.

"Counsel, I suggest everyone return to reality. Wealth does not create parental superiority."

Victoria's mouth tightened.

The emergency petition was denied.

Outside, microphones surrounded Ethan.

"Mr. Hayes, did your ex-wife conceal your children?"

"No."

"Will you seek full custody?"

"No."

"Are the twins heirs to the Hayes fortune?"

"They're children."

"Did your mother know?"

Ethan stopped.

Cameras flashed.

Victoria exited behind him.

For a moment, mother and son looked at one another.

Then Ethan answered.

"Yes."

The crowd erupted.

Victoria's face became stone.

"Ethan," she whispered.

He turned to Clara.

"Let's get the kids out of here."

They walked toward the waiting car.

Clara stopped.

"We're taking the bus."

Reporters stared.

Ethan looked at the black Mercedes beside him.

Then at Clara.

"Okay."

He turned to his driver.

"Go home."

Twenty minutes later, one of San Francisco's richest developers sat on a crowded municipal bus with Noah asleep against his arm.

Sophie sat between him and Clara.

She examined Ethan's watch.

"Is that expensive?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

Ethan considered.

"I was stupid."

Clara covered a smile.

Sophie nodded seriously.

"Mommy says expensive doesn't always mean better."

"Your mommy is usually right."

"Usually?"

Clara looked at him.

"Careful."

For the first time in five years, Ethan laughed.

It lasted only a moment.

Then his phone vibrated.

A message from his investigator.

We found the person who processed Clara's communications.

Former executive assistant, Lydia Chen.

She's willing to talk.

But there's something else.

Ethan opened the next message.

Attached was a scanned bank transfer.

$250,000.

Sender: Hayes Family Holdings.

Recipient: Lydia Chen.

Date: two days after the twins were born.

Clara saw his expression.

"What?"

Ethan looked at the children.

Then at her.

"Someone got paid a quarter of a million dollars right after Sophie and Noah were born."

Clara went pale.

"For what?"

May you like

Ethan stared out the bus window.

"I'm going to find out."
