Chapter 8 - The Choice Salvatore Made

Dominic demanded the recorder.

Salvatore stepped into the terminal alone, holding it in one hand.

Sophia saw him and began crying.

“You came back,” she whispered.

“Always,” he said.

Dominic smiled. “Touching.”

“Let her go,” Salvatore said.

“Give me the recorder.”

Salvatore lifted it.

“You first.”

Dominic pressed a gun closer to Sophia’s shoulder.

Elena, hidden with Marco behind a container wall, nearly ran forward. Vincent held her back.

“Wait,” he whispered.

Dominic laughed.

“You were always weak where children were concerned, Salvatore. That’s why you were easy to manipulate.”

Salvatore looked at Sophia.

She looked so small.

So frightened.

And yet she was standing still, trying to be brave because she believed bravery meant taking pain so other people did not have to.

He remembered his younger brother.

He remembered every life he had ruined chasing revenge.

Then he dropped the recorder to the ground.

“Take it,” he said.

Marco’s voice crackled through an earpiece. “Salvatore—”

“Take it,” Salvatore repeated.

Dominic stepped forward.

The second he bent to grab the recorder, Sophia stomped hard on his foot.

He cursed and loosened his grip.

Salvatore moved.

Everything happened at once.

Marco’s team rushed in.

Gunfire rang out.

Elena ran toward Sophia.

Vincent tackled Dominic before he could aim again.

Salvatore covered Sophia with his body as debris shattered overhead.

Then police sirens filled the night.

Officers swarmed the terminal—officers Vincent had trusted, officers whose names were clean.

Dominic was arrested alive.

As he was dragged away, he looked at Salvatore.

“You think this makes you a good man?”

Salvatore held Sophia close.

“No,” he said. “But it gives me a chance to become one.”

The aftermath changed everything.

The recordings exposed Dominic’s network. Politicians resigned. Officers were arrested. Businesses connected to Vale were seized.

Salvatore voluntarily surrendered documents tied to his own organization. He accepted that the empire he had built could not remain untouched by the truth.

Marco was furious.

“You’re handing them everything.”

“I’m handing them what should have been handed over years ago.”

“You could lose it all.”

Salvatore looked through the courthouse window at Elena and Sophia waiting outside.

“Then I lose it.”

Elena did not forgive him all at once.

But she saw the choice he made.

He chose Sophia over power.

He chose truth over the old family code.

And that mattered.

At home, Sophia sat in the greenhouse with Salvatore.

The rebuilt glass walls reflected the evening sky.

“Are you going to jail?” she asked.

“Maybe.”

“Will you leave?”

Salvatore looked at her.

“If I have to go, I will tell you where I am. I will write. I will call. And I will come back if they let me.”

Sophia thought quietly.

“That’s better than disappearing.”

“Yes,” he said. “It is.”

She handed him a small drawing.

It showed a cake with eight candles.

Above it, in crooked letters, were the words:

PEOPLE CAN STAY.

Salvatore held the picture carefully.

May you like

Like it was the most valuable thing he had ever owned.
