Chapter 4 - Damian’s Return

Damian looked nothing like the polished family photographs.
In those pictures, he had a clean-cut smile and the confident posture of a successful executive. The man standing in the hallway wore a rumpled suit, had bruised knuckles, and carried the sharp smell of whiskey.
His eyes landed on Brianna.
Then on me.
Then on the broken glass scattered across the floor.
“What’s going on?” he asked.
Naomi rushed toward him. “Nothing, sweetheart. Brianna had an accident.”
Damian’s gaze narrowed.
“Again?”
Brianna backed away.
I stepped in front of her.
Damian looked me up and down. “And you must be Alyssa.”
“Yes.”
“Gavin’s little success story.”
Gavin moved forward. “Damian, not now.”
Damian laughed. “Not now? You mean not before you get her signature?”
My heart stopped.
Gavin’s face hardened. “You’re drunk.”
“I’m honest.” Damian looked directly at me. “Did they tell you you’re marrying into a family? Or did they tell you you’re buying a prison cell with your own money?”
Naomi slapped him across the face.
The sound cracked through the hallway.
For a moment, Damian looked stunned.
Then he smiled.
It was not a pleasant smile.
“You all think I’m the problem,” he said. “But I learned from the best.”
Brianna began to cry silently.
Damian turned toward her.
“I told you not to talk.”
I grabbed Brianna’s hand.
“You’re leaving with me.”
Naomi stepped in front of the door. “No one is leaving.”
The house seemed to close around us.
Elijah moved toward the study and quietly locked the door.
Gavin’s eyes remained fixed on me.
“You should have signed the agreement,” he said.
My heart pounded, but I kept my voice calm.
“You think locking me in here will make me sign?”
“No,” he replied. “But consequences might.”
He looked at Brianna.
I understood immediately.
They would hurt her to control me.
The same way they had hurt her to keep their secrets.
The same way they planned to hurt me once I had given them access to everything I owned.
I pulled Brianna closer.
“You’re not touching her,” I said.
Damian took a step forward.
Before he could reach us, the front windows shattered.
A loud command filled the house.
“ATLANTA POLICE! EVERYONE STAY WHERE YOU ARE!”
For one second, nobody moved.
Then everything exploded into chaos.
Naomi screamed.
Elijah ran toward the back hallway.
Gavin grabbed my arm.
Damian lunged toward Brianna.
But Brianna was faster than anyone expected.
She picked up the broken glass tray from the floor and swung it at Damian’s hand.
He shouted and stumbled back.
I pulled her toward the front entrance just as officers burst through the door.
“Police!” someone shouted. “Hands where we can see them!”
Gavin released me immediately.
His expression transformed in an instant. He looked shocked. Betrayed. Concerned.
“Alyssa,” he said, “thank God. I was trying to protect you.”
I almost admired the performance.
Almost.
Officer Daniels, a woman in her forties with a firm voice, approached me first.
“Are you Alyssa Wellman?”
“Yes.”
“Are you injured?”
“No. But Brianna needs help.”
The officer looked at Brianna’s bruises, her torn sleeve, her shaking hands.
Then she turned toward Naomi.
“What happened here?”
Naomi began crying.
“My daughter-in-law has severe emotional problems. We’ve been trying to care for her.”
Brianna trembled beside me.
I squeezed her hand.
“You don’t have to be afraid,” I whispered.
She looked at me.
Then, with tears sliding down her cheeks, she spoke.
“They locked me in the storage room.”
Naomi’s expression froze.
Brianna swallowed.
“They hit me. They took my phone. They made me work in the house. They said if I told anyone, Damian would make sure I disappeared.”
Damian cursed under his breath.
Officers moved toward him.
He tried to resist.
Two of them restrained him against the wall.
Gavin stared at Brianna with pure hatred.
“You stupid girl,” he muttered.
Officer Daniels heard him.
“So did I.”
Within minutes, the house was filled with investigators.
The damaged storage room was photographed. The kitchen was examined. The safe, the documents, the transfer agreement, and the false claims about Brianna’s “medical diet” were all collected.
Then an officer came down from the second floor holding a small locked box.
“Found this in the master bedroom,” he said.
Elijah’s face changed.
“What is that?” I asked.
The officer opened it.
Inside were passports.
Cash.
Documents.
And several photographs of me.
Photos taken outside my office, my apartment, and my gym.
My skin crawled.
Gavin had been watching me long before I realized I was in danger.
Officer Daniels looked at him.
“Mr. Herndon,” she said, “you need to come with us.”
Gavin looked at me as officers placed handcuffs around his wrists.
“You think you’ve won?” he whispered.
I met his eyes.
“No,” I said. “I think Brianna finally has a chance.”
But even as they took him away, I knew the family’s secret was bigger than domestic abuse and theft.
Because hidden beneath the photographs was a file labeled with the name of my company.

And inside it was proof that Gavin’s family had been planning to destroy Wellman Creative from the beginning.
