Chapter 5 - The War for Brooklyn

An hour later, rain poured over the industrial docks of Red Hook, Brooklyn.

The storm whipped the dark waters of the Hudson River into white-capped waves as lightning illuminated the towering shipping cranes. This was Viktor Rostov’s primary stronghold—a massive, fortified warehouse filled with shipping containers, weapons crates, and heavy machinery.

Viktor thought he was safe behind his army of guards. He didn't know that I had mobilized my entire syndicate.

Six blacked-out armored SUVs tore through the chain-link gates of the shipping yard, smashing through Rostov’s security checkpoints. Over thirty of my top tactical operatives poured out, engaging the Russian guards in a ferocious firefight under the flashing red spotlights of the docks.

I stepped out of the lead vehicle, clad in dark body armor, an assault rifle slung over my shoulder. Beside me, Sarah wore a tactical vest, her dark hair tied back, her expression set in stone.

“Stay behind me,” I barked over the roaring sound of thunder and gunfire.

“You watch the left, I’ll watch the right,” she countered, clicking the safety off her pistol.

We moved through the maze of metal shipping containers like a pair of hunting wolves. Sarah moved with surprising tactical precision, covering my flank as we cut through Rostov’s outer guard layer. Whenever a mercenary stepped into our path, we neutralized them before they could sound an internal alarm.

We breached the main office complex at the center of the warehouse.

Inside, sitting behind a massive steel desk surrounded by security monitors, was Viktor Rostov. He was a broad, grey-haired man in his late fifties, wearing an expensive tailored coat, his face etched with cruel arrogance. In his right hand, he held a heavy silver revolver.

When he saw us breach the double doors, his eyes widened in genuine shock—not at me, but at the woman standing beside me.

“Sarah?” Viktor breathed, his raspy voice filled with disbelieving rage. “You... you dare stand beside this dog? My own blood?”

“I am not your blood, Viktor,” Sarah said, her voice dropping into a deadly whisper as she aimed her weapon at his chest. “My mother’s blood runs in my veins. The mother you murdered.”

Viktor laughed—a dry, sinister sound that echoed off the metal walls. “Your mother was weak! She thought she could destroy what I built! And you... you ran away to become a servant girl for Julian Thorne!”

He whipped his revolver toward Sarah.

I reacted instantly. I lunged in front of Sarah, throwing my body between her and the bullet.

BANG!

A searing pain erupted in my shoulder as Viktor’s bullet tore through the ballistic padding of my vest. I stumbled backward, crashing against a row of filing cabinets, my rifle slipping from my grip.

“Julian!” Sarah screamed.

Viktor sneered, stepping out from behind his desk, raising his gun to finish me off. “You brought a girl to a man’s war, Thorne. Now you die together.”

Before Viktor could squeeze the trigger a second time, Sarah didn't panic. She didn't cry.

She stepped around my fallen frame, her posture locking into a perfect marksmanship stance. Her breathing went completely still.

BANG! BANG!

Two rapid shots echoed through the office.

The silver revolver flew from Viktor’s hand as a bullet shattered his wrist. The second bullet tore straight through his knee, sending the terrifying mob boss crashing to his hands and knees on the cold concrete floor, howling in agony.

Sarah stepped forward, kicking the fallen revolver away. She placed the smoking barrel of her pistol directly against the bridge of Viktor’s nose.

Viktor looked up at his daughter, coughing blood, his eyes filled with sudden, overwhelming terror. “Sarah... please... I’m your father...”

“My father died three years ago,” Sarah whispered coldly. “Tonight, I’m just the woman delivering your judgment.”

She looked back at me. I gave her a slow, silent nod.

Sarah pulled the trigger.

The reign of Viktor Rostov was over.
