Chapter 4 - The Marina Trap

The operation began before sunrise.
Miami-Dade police, federal agents, New York detectives, and surveillance teams moved into position around the private marina.
I watched the live feed from a secure room in Brooklyn, standing beside Maya’s hospital bed. She had been cleared to leave that morning, but refused to go anywhere until Liam was safe.
“He should be with us,” she whispered, holding him tightly.
“He is with us,” I said. “No one is taking him.”
But both of us knew the truth.
Our son should never have had to become evidence in a criminal investigation.
The plan was simple.
An undercover agent would pose as a private nurse arriving with a newborn. Another agent would pose as a driver. A hidden camera would record everything.
My mother had been told that “the baby” was being transported from New York after Maya supposedly suffered a breakdown.
At 10:14 a.m., Diane arrived at the marina.
She wore sunglasses, a cream-colored coat, and the same cold confidence she had carried through every family gathering for years.
Chloe walked beside her.
Mark followed behind them, nervous and constantly checking his phone.
They waited near a sleek white yacht called The Celeste.
Then Gerald Knox appeared.
My mother smiled when she saw him.
Actually smiled.
The live video froze something inside me.
Agent Brennan leaned toward the screen.
“Audio is live.”
Gerald shook my mother’s hand.
“You said the father was still overseas.”
“He is,” Diane said. “He’s too busy trying to impress Germans with spreadsheets to know what’s happening at home.”
Chloe laughed.
“What about the mother?” Gerald asked.
“She’s weak,” Diane replied. “And she’s always been emotional. She’ll sign whatever David tells her to sign once he gets back.”
Mark looked uncomfortable.
“Diane, maybe we should wait.”
My mother turned sharply.
“Wait for what? That girl to recover and start making demands? David has money. This baby could ruin everything if she decides to divorce him.”
“He’s his son,” Mark said.
Diane’s mouth tightened.
“Exactly. David’s son. Not hers.”
The words crushed Maya.
She turned away from the screen, sobbing silently.
I wrapped one arm around her while holding Liam with the other.
Then Gerald opened a folder.
“Once the child is aboard, we sail to the Bahamas. Documents will be arranged from there.”
My mother nodded.
“And the payment?”
“Half now. Half after the adoption is finalized.”
“Adoption?” Mark said. “You said this was temporary guardianship.”
Everyone went quiet.
Chloe glared at him.
“Mark, shut up.”
He took a step back.
“What are you people doing?”
Diane’s voice sharpened. “What we have to do.”
“No,” Mark said. “This is kidnapping.”
Gerald’s expression darkened.
“Your brother-in-law’s family problems are not your concern.”
Mark looked around the marina, terrified.
Then he ran.
Two of Gerald’s men grabbed him before he reached the parking lot.
The agents in the surveillance room moved immediately.
“Go,” Agent Brennan ordered.
The live feed erupted into chaos.
Federal vehicles surrounded the marina. Officers rushed from behind storage buildings. Gerald’s men reached for weapons. Diane screamed. Chloe tried to run toward the yacht.
Within seconds, she was on the ground in handcuffs.
My mother stood perfectly still.
Even surrounded by armed officers, she looked more offended than afraid.
Then she saw the undercover agent holding a bundled doll instead of a baby.
Her face changed.
She understood.
“David?” she whispered.
I was already on the video call.
Agent Brennan held up a phone so she could see my face.
My mother stared at me.
“David,” she said again, but now her voice was shaking. “You don’t understand.”
“Oh, I understand,” I replied.
“You set me up?”
“You starved my wife.”
“She was exaggerating.”
“You stole Liam’s formula.”
“She had enough.”
“You turned off the heat.”
“It wasn’t that cold.”
“You planned to sell my son.”
Her mouth opened.
“No. No, I was trying to protect him.”
“From his mother?”
“From her!” Diane screamed. “She trapped you. She took you away from your family. You were supposed to listen to me.”
Maya stepped closer to the phone.
Her voice was quiet.
“You almost killed me.”
For the first time, my mother had no answer.
Chloe began crying as officers placed her in the back of a police SUV.
“I didn’t know it was this serious,” she said.
I looked at her.
“You carried our food out of our apartment.”
She lowered her eyes.
“I thought Mom knew what she was doing.”
“That is not an excuse.”
Mark was found later that day. He had been held in a storage room on the yacht, frightened but unharmed. His testimony would become crucial.
And Gerald Knox?
He was arrested alive.
But before they led him away, he said something that made Agent Brennan’s face go pale.
“This isn’t over,” he muttered. “You only caught the people stupid enough to show up.”
That night, Maya and I returned to our apartment.
The police had cleared it, but neither of us could bear to stay there.
The refrigerator was still empty.
The note was still taped to the counter.
The apartment still smelled cold.
I picked up Maya’s old cardigan from the kitchen chair.
Blood stained the sleeve.
Maya stood beside me, holding Liam.
“I don’t want to remember this place,” she said.
I looked around the apartment where my family had tried to break us.
“Then we won’t live here anymore.”
As we stepped into the hallway, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A man’s voice said only one sentence:
“You embarrassed the wrong people, David Carter.”
May you like
Then the line went dead.
