Chapter 4 - THE GUARDIANSHIP HOUSE

The court order looked authentic.
It carried a judge’s electronic seal and Victor’s medical history from the year after Clara died. The petition described panic attacks, insomnia, and episodes of grief severe enough to impair his judgment.
Every fact came from private therapy records.
Evelyn had obtained them illegally.
The order claimed Victor staged Lily’s kidnapping to discredit Serena and interfere with Ethan’s lawful transfer.
A private ambulance removed Ethan twenty minutes before Victor returned.
The destination listed was Briarwood Pediatric Recovery Center.
No facility by that name existed at the registered address.
Detective Lena requested an emergency warrant.
Naomi challenged the guardianship.
Victor did neither calmly.
“My son was taken because a judge signed paper without speaking to me.”
“A clerk processed forged supporting documents,” Naomi said. “We are correcting it.”
“Correcting it does not tell me where Ethan is.”
Lily stood beside Rosa’s hospital bed.
The retired nurse had been injected with a sedative but was expected to recover.
“She heard the driver say ‘the lower house,’” Lily said.
Victor looked at her.
“What lower house?”
“Clara mentioned it once. She said Evelyn had a place beneath the estate where sick family members used to be hidden from guests.”
Marcus searched old tax maps.
A second mansion had stood on the Hale property a century earlier. After a fire, the family built the current residence uphill and converted the original stone foundations into wine storage and storm shelters.
The underground rooms extended beneath the north gardens.
One sat directly below the chapel.
The private ambulance had never left the estate.
Evelyn had moved Ethan through the tunnels while police searched roads and airports.
Lena assembled a tactical team.
Naomi stopped Victor before he entered the passage.
“You are still under a guardianship order restricting contact.”
“It is fraudulent.”
“Until the judge rescinds it, Evelyn will use any confrontation to support her case.”
“My son is underground with the woman who helped kill his mother.”
Lily stepped forward.
“I’ll go.”
Victor turned.
“No.”
“She doesn’t have an order against me.”
“She already kidnapped you once.”
“And Ethan trusts me.”
The argument ended there.
Lily entered the lower passage with Lena and three officers. Victor remained in the command room above, watching body-camera footage.
The tunnel opened into a tiled corridor with old hospital lights.
Briarwood existed beneath the mansion.
Bedrooms lined both sides.
Some contained medical restraints.
One held files documenting Hale family members sent away for addiction, pregnancy, depression, or behavior considered embarrassing.
Evelyn’s system had existed long before Serena.
At the corridor’s end, Lily heard Ethan crying.
She found him inside a nursery painted pale blue.
Serena stood beside the crib wearing a nurse’s uniform.
Evelyn sat in a chair near the fireplace.
She looked elegant, composed, and unsurprised.
“Lily,” she said. “Clara always did choose ambitious servants.”
“Give me Ethan.”
“You have no legal standing.”
“He’s terrified.”
“He is adjusting.”
Ethan reached toward Lily.
“Lil.”
His voice cracked.
Lily moved forward.
Serena blocked her.
“Touch him and you will be arrested for interfering with custody.”
Lena entered with the warrant.
“The guardianship order has been suspended.”
For the first time, Evelyn’s composure shifted.
Naomi had reached the judge.
The court discovered that the doctor supporting Evelyn’s petition had died three years earlier. The security footage had been edited. Serena’s sworn statement used a false identity.
Officers moved toward Ethan.
Evelyn pressed a button beneath the chair.
Steel shutters dropped across the nursery doors.
Gas began hissing through the ventilation system.
Serena looked at her.
“You said we were leaving.”
Evelyn stood.
“You have become evidence.”
A glass wall separated the nursery from a second passage.
Evelyn stepped through a hidden door and locked it behind her.
She had trapped Serena with everyone else.
Lily covered Ethan’s face with his blanket and crawled toward the vent control. Lena fired at the locking mechanism while officers searched for an emergency release.
Serena began coughing.
“She’s going to kill us.”
“What gas is it?” Lily asked.
“A surgical sedative. Clara received it before the balcony.”
Serena’s confession transmitted through every officer’s body camera.
Lily ripped open the vent panel with a metal toy bracket. The main valve sat behind it.
She reached inside.
The sharp metal cut her hand.
“Turn it clockwise!” Serena shouted.
Lily closed the valve.
The gas slowed.
Officers forced the doors open.
Victor ignored Naomi and entered the passage the moment Ethan appeared on the monitor.
He reached the nursery as Lily carried his son into the corridor.
Ethan launched himself toward him.
“Daddy.”
Victor held him against his chest.
Over Ethan’s shoulder, he saw Serena being handcuffed.
“Where is my mother?”
Serena looked toward the hidden passage.
“She went to activate the trust archive.”
“The trust doesn’t activate until Ethan’s birthday.”
“She moved the date.”
“How?”
“With Clara’s key.”
The gold key did not merely open a vault.
It opened the original identity archive proving who controlled the Ashcroft Trust.
Evelyn planned to alter the beneficiary records and erase Ethan before his third birthday.
Serena leaned closer.
“You want to know the worst part?”
Victor waited.
“Clara survived the first fall.”
The corridor went silent.
“She was alive when Evelyn reached the balcony courtyard,” Serena said. “Your mother sent the ambulance away and had Gabriel move her back inside.”
Victor’s face emptied.
“What happened to her?”
May you like
Serena’s eyes moved toward the oldest locked room in Briarwood.
“She died behind that door.”
