Chapter 6 - THE MAN AT THE DOOR

Claire did not open the door.

That decision saved them from a disaster.

Daniel continued knocking.

“Claire, I only want to talk.”

She stood in the hallway holding her phone with both hands.

Adrian remained connected.

Police were already coming.

“Go to Lily,” Adrian said quietly.

Claire entered her daughter’s bedroom.

Lily was asleep beneath a blanket covered in tiny stars.

Claire locked the bedroom door.

“Daniel,” she called loudly enough for him to hear from outside the apartment. “Leave.”

“I’m not here to hurt anybody.”

Claire’s entire body remembered the last time he had said those words.

Daniel had never been convicted of assaulting Claire.

He had gone to prison for violating probation after attacking another man during a bar fight.

But Claire knew his violence personally.

Broken plates.

Walls punched inches from her head.

Her phone thrown through a window.

One night when Lily was three, Daniel had shoved Claire against a refrigerator while the little girl cried in the next room.

Claire left the following morning.

She never went back.

“Celeste told me you were ruining people,” Daniel called.

Claire almost laughed.

Of course Celeste had chosen him.

She had found someone who already hated Claire.

Someone who knew exactly how to frighten her.

“What did she pay you?” Claire asked.

Silence.

That was answer enough.

Adrian’s voice sounded through the phone.

“Police are less than a minute away.”

A loud bang hit the apartment door.

Claire flinched.

Lily woke.

“Mommy?”

Claire immediately sat beside her.

“It’s okay.”

Another bang.

Lily began to cry.

Claire covered her daughter’s ears.

Then a different voice thundered from the hallway.

“Step away from the door.”

Adrian.

Claire’s heart stopped.

She rushed toward the bedroom door but did not open it.

Through the apartment entrance, she could hear men arguing.

Daniel laughed.

“So you’re him.”

“Walk away.”

“Billionaire hero.”

“Walk away.”

“You know she married me, right?”

Adrian said nothing.

“She never tell you what she’s really like?”

“I know enough about you.”

Daniel’s voice sharpened.

“You don’t know anything.”

“I know you put your hands on her.”

Silence.

Claire closed her eyes.

She had never told Adrian directly.

He had guessed.

Daniel replied.

“She likes making men angry.”

Adrian’s response was calm.

“That sentence tells me everything I need to know.”

Police sirens grew louder.

Daniel swore.

“Celeste said she’d pay the rest after I got Claire to sign.”

Claire froze.

Adrian immediately asked, “Sign what?”

Daniel realized his mistake.

“Nothing.”

“What did she want signed?”

“Go to hell.”

Police officers reached the hallway seconds later.

Daniel was detained for violating the restraining order Claire still had against him.

Inside the apartment, Lily cried against Claire’s chest.

When an officer finally knocked and identified himself, Claire opened the door.

Adrian stood at the far end of the hallway.

He had kept his promise.

He had not come inside.

He had not tried to force his presence into Claire’s fear.

He simply waited.

Daniel was escorted past him in handcuffs.

The two men looked at each other.

Daniel smiled.

“She used to say your name in her sleep.”

Adrian’s expression did not change.

Daniel continued.

“Even when she was married to me.”

“Keep walking,” the officer said.

When the elevator doors closed, Claire stepped into the hallway.

Adrian looked toward Lily.

“Is she okay?”

Claire nodded.

“Scared.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Why are you apologizing?”

“Because this came from Celeste.”

“You didn’t send him.”

“No.”

“Then stop carrying everyone else’s guilt.”

He stared at her.

“You used to tell me that.”

“What?”

“That I thought I could fix everyone.”

Claire remembered.

“You were annoying.”

He almost smiled.

“So were you.”

Lily peeked from behind Claire.

“Did you bring the dinosaur?”

Adrian blinked.

Claire laughed.

The sound surprised all three of them.

“Yes,” Adrian said. “I did.”

He walked to the elevator, where an enormous stuffed green dinosaur sat propped against the wall.

Lily gasped.

“That’s bigger than me!”

“I underestimated its dimensions.”

Claire looked at him.

“You bought that yourself?”

“The man in the store warned me.”

“And you ignored him?”

“I’m learning that fatherhood involves poor spatial judgment.”

Lily ran toward the dinosaur.

For five precious minutes, fear disappeared.

Later, after Lily fell asleep again, Claire and Adrian sat inside the kitchen.

The police had left.

A private security officer remained outside, something Claire had reluctantly accepted.

Adrian placed his phone on the table.

“Daniel mentioned papers.”

“Yes.”

“Do you know what Celeste wanted you to sign?”

“No.”

James called fifteen minutes later with an answer.

Police had searched Daniel after his arrest.

Inside his jacket was an envelope.

The document was a sworn statement.

It claimed Claire had told Daniel years ago that Adrian knew about Lily and had willingly abandoned her.

It also claimed Claire had deliberately returned to New York intending to expose Lily during Adrian’s wedding.

The statement was already typed.

Daniel only needed Claire’s signature.

“She wanted him to force me to sign it,” Claire whispered.

Adrian looked furious.

James continued over speakerphone.

“There’s something else. Daniel admitted Celeste offered him seventy-five thousand dollars.”

“For what?” Adrian asked.

“To obtain Claire’s signature and convince her to leave New York.”

Claire rubbed her temples.

“This woman will not stop.”

James paused.

“She may have to.”

“What does that mean?”

“The district attorney has enough now to request a warrant.”

“For Celeste?”

“Yes.”

Claire stared at the table.

Adrian asked, “When?”

“Likely tonight.”

It happened at 1:07 a.m.

Celeste Monroe was taken into custody from her family’s Upper East Side townhouse on suspicion of conspiracy, forgery, unlawful access to electronic communications, and witness intimidation.

Her brother was detained two hours later.

But Margaret Cole was not arrested.

Not yet.

The next morning, Adrian went to see his mother.

Claire did not accompany him.

The conversation belonged to him.

Margaret received her son inside the same townhouse where he had grown up.

Breakfast waited on the table.

Adrian did not sit.

“Did you authorize Celeste to intercept Claire’s communications?”

Margaret looked exhausted.

“Yes.”

“Did you read the forged letter?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know about the fake transfer?”

“Not until later.”

“And when you found out?”

“I stayed silent.”

“Why?”

Tears formed in her eyes.

“Because your father was dying.”

Adrian’s expression changed.

Margaret continued.

“The company was everything to him. Celeste’s family saved it.”

“So you sacrificed Claire.”

“I believed you would move on.”

“I didn’t.”

“I know.”

“You watched me spend years thinking she sold what we had for money.”

Margaret cried.

“I was wrong.”

“You watched me marry the woman who did it.”

“I told myself Celeste had changed.”

“She broke into Claire’s apartment.”

“I didn’t know she planned that.”

“But your attorney helped her.”

Margaret covered her face.

“He told me they only wanted to retrieve documents.”

“From Claire’s home.”

Margaret had no answer.

Adrian walked toward the door.

“Is there anything else?”

His mother looked at him.

“What do you mean?”

“Any other lie waiting to destroy someone I love?”

Margaret flinched.

“No.”

Adrian reached the door.

“Then this is the last conversation we’re having for a while.”

“Adrian.”

He stopped.

“She’s my granddaughter.”

He turned.

“Claire will decide who gets access to Lily.”

“I’m your mother.”

“And Claire is Lily’s mother.”

Margaret lowered her eyes.

Adrian continued.

“You forgot what that meant once.”

He left.

That afternoon, the DNA results arrived.

99.9997 percent probability.

Adrian Cole was Lily Bennett’s biological father.

Claire stared at the report for a long time.

She had never doubted it.

But seeing the words transformed the truth into something official.

Adrian sat across from her.

He looked nervous.

“What happens now?” he asked.

Claire folded the document.

“We figure it out.”

“Custody?”

“Eventually.”

“Lawyers?”

“Probably.”

“I don’t want to fight you.”

“Good.”

“I want to be her father.”

Claire studied him.

“That takes more than DNA.”

“I know.”

“Birthdays matter.”

“I know.”

“Doctor appointments. School pickups. Sitting through terrible cartoons. Knowing she hates peas but will eat broccoli if you call it tiny trees.”

Adrian smiled.

“Tiny trees.”

“Don’t abuse the information.”

“I wouldn’t dare.”

Claire’s expression softened.

“She gets nightmares when thunderstorms are loud.”

“Okay.”

“She pretends she doesn’t.”

“Like her mother.”

Claire looked at him.

“You remember that?”

“You once made me turn every television in my apartment on during a storm so I wouldn’t hear the thunder.”

“I was twenty-four.”

“You claimed it was because you liked background noise.”

“I did.”

“You were terrified.”

“Maybe.”

They smiled.

Then silence returned.

A different kind this time.

Not hostile.

Not easy either.

Adrian looked toward her.

“I missed you.”

Claire’s eyes filled before she could stop them.

“Don’t.”

“I’m not asking for anything.”

“Good.”

“I just needed you to know.”

Claire looked down.

“I missed you too.”

The words escaped before she could catch them.

Adrian did not move closer.

That made them safer.

Then Lily burst into the room holding the giant dinosaur.

“Can Dad stay for pizza?”

Claire froze.

Adrian froze harder.

Lily looked between them.

“What?”

Claire swallowed.

“You called him Dad.”

Lily shrugged.

“He is.”

Adrian turned his face away.

Claire saw him wipe one eye.

Lily sighed.

“You’re crying again.”

Adrian laughed.

“Apparently that’s becoming a problem.”

Claire looked at the two of them.

For the first time since the wedding, she did not see catastrophe.

She saw possibility.

But possibility was fragile.

And three days later, Celeste Monroe offered prosecutors a deal.

She would provide evidence against Margaret Cole.

In exchange, she wanted one thing.

May you like

A private meeting with Claire.
