Chapter 4 - The House With No Lights

Vincent killed every light in the farmhouse.
Emma sat in the dark kitchen, pressed between Vincent and Matteo behind the old pantry wall. The hidden space smelled like dust, wood, and dried herbs.
Outside, vehicles rolled to a stop.
Doors opened.
Men spoke in low voices.
Emma’s breathing became shallow.
Vincent leaned close to her.
“Listen to me. You stay here. No matter what you hear, you do not come out until Matteo says your name. Understand?”
She nodded, tears glittering in the darkness.
“Are they going to hurt you?”
Vincent looked at her.
“I won’t let them hurt you.”
It was not a promise he could make lightly.
But he made it anyway.
Matteo slipped out through the rear of the house, carrying a secure phone and the laptop containing the copied files. Vincent moved toward the front hall.
The men outside expected the old Vincent Castellano.
They expected a man who would meet violence with violence.
But Vincent had spent years learning that the cleanest victory was not always the loudest one.
He had already sent the files to three places.
A federal task force.
An investigative journalist who hated Vale.
And an encrypted dead-man’s switch that would release everything publicly if the farmhouse signal went dark.
When the front door burst open, Vincent was waiting.
A man in a black coat stepped inside.
“Where’s the girl?” he asked.
Vincent looked at him.
“Alexander Vale sent you?”
The man smiled.
“He wants what belongs to him.”
“No,” Vincent said. “He wants what can destroy him.”
The man’s expression hardened.
“You have no idea what you’re dealing with.”
Vincent stepped closer.
“I spent half my life dealing with men who confuse fear with power.”
The man moved toward him.
Then a red light appeared through the farmhouse window.
A camera.
Then another.
Outside, engines roared.
Not more Raven Circle vehicles.
Federal agents.
The farmhouse erupted with shouted commands.
“Federal agents! Hands where we can see them!”
The men who had entered through the front door tried to run. Vincent did not chase them. He stood still while agents flooded the house.
A moment later, Matteo emerged from the rear entrance with Emma in his arms.
She saw Vincent and reached for him.
He took her immediately.
“Did you win?” she whispered.
Vincent looked toward the agents leading the men away.
“No,” he said. “Not yet.”
At dawn, federal agents brought the news.
The USB drive was authentic. The evidence was enough to obtain emergency warrants across multiple states. Warehouses were being raided. Accounts frozen. Several of Vale’s executives had already been detained.
But Alexander Vale himself was gone.
“He has a private airstrip,” Agent Rebecca Sloan said. “He may already be moving.”
Emma sat in Vincent’s lap at the farmhouse table.
“Will he find my dad?”
Agent Sloan exchanged a look with Vincent.
“We’re trying to locate him,” she said carefully.
Emma’s voice shook.
“Is he alive?”
No one answered.
Then Vincent’s phone buzzed.
A video message had arrived from an unknown number.
It showed Daniel Martinez.
Alive.
Bound to a chair in a dim room.
Alexander Vale stood behind him.
Vale looked directly into the camera.
“Bring me the girl,” he said. “Or Emma loses the only family she has left.”
The video ended.
Emma made a small, broken sound.
Vincent looked at Agent Sloan.
“We find him,” he said.
Sloan’s expression was firm.
“We will.”
Vincent shook his head.
“No. We find him before Vale can move again.”

And for the first time in years, Vincent Castellano chose to walk back into the world he had escaped—not to reclaim power, but to save a father who had trusted him with everything.
