Chapter 6 - THE NIGHT VINCENT GAVE AWAY HIS EMPIRE

Vincent agreed before anyone could stop him.
“No.”
Claire stood between him and the door of the Philadelphia apartment.
“Move.”
“No.”
“Rachel is my family.”
“And you walking alone into Vale’s trap helps her how?”
“He asked for me.”
“Exactly.”
Daniel joined her.
“She’s right.”
Vincent looked at him.
“I don’t remember asking.”
“You ignored me eight years ago. Let’s try something different.”
Vincent almost smiled despite the situation.
Marcus arrived with federal agents forty minutes later.
The hard drive changed everything.
The FBI had investigated Adrian Vale for years under different names.
They never knew he had replaced Dominic Calder.
Now they did.
Agent Rebecca Sloan spread photographs across the table.
“Vale wants a public announcement.”
Vincent nodded.
“At midnight.”
“Location?”
“Old Calder Theater in Brooklyn.”
The theater had closed fourteen years earlier.
Vincent’s father once used the basement for private meetings.
Sloan looked at Daniel.
“He wants the drive too.”
Daniel nodded.
Marcus said:
“We give him both.”
Vincent frowned.
Marcus continued.
“A copy.”
Daniel had already duplicated the files.
The original was being uploaded to federal servers.
Even if Vale destroyed the drive, the evidence survived.
Vincent understood the plan.
“He thinks he wins.”
“Long enough to show Rachel.”
Claire approached him.
“You’re still not going alone.”
“Sloan will have teams outside.”
“That is not what I meant.”
Vincent looked at her.
Claire lowered her voice.
“You keep trying to protect everyone by deciding things for them.”
He recognized the accusation.
His father had done the same.
Different methods.
Same arrogance.
“What are you asking?”
“Trust us.”
Us.
Daniel.
Claire.
Marcus.
Federal agents.
People Vincent would once have considered liabilities.
He nodded slowly.
“Fine.”
At 11:53 p.m., Vincent entered the Calder Theater.
Alone, visibly.
But carrying a concealed transmitter.
The stage lights came on.
Rachel sat center stage.
Hands tied.
Tape across her mouth.
Vale stood beside her.
Up close, the surgery looked more obvious than Vincent remembered.
The ears were wrong.
The jaw too tight.
He wondered how he had missed it.
Perhaps because families often saw what they expected to see.
“Vincent.”
“Adrian.”
Vale smiled.
“So Daniel told you.”
“You should have picked a face with better hair.”
Vale laughed.
“Still arrogant.”
“Still alive.”
“For now.”
Vincent held up the drive.
“Rachel first.”
“No.”
“You need me more than I need you.”
Vale’s smile faded.
“You care about her.”
“Yes.”
“That makes you weak.”
Vincent remembered his father saying the same thing.
He used to believe it.
“No,” Vincent said. “It makes me predictable.”
Vale frowned.
“Predictable men are easy to negotiate with.”
“And men who think love is weakness eventually underestimate the people who have it.”
Vale gestured toward a camera.
“Your statement.”
Vincent approached the microphone.
The camera streamed to several Calder executives.
Vale wanted witnesses.
Vincent began.
“My name is Vincent Calder.”
Rachel watched him.
“I have controlled the Calder organization for sixteen years.”
Vale nodded.
Vincent continued.
“Tonight, I am stepping down.”
Rachel’s eyes widened.
“Effective immediately.”
Vale smiled.
“I am also ordering the permanent dissolution of every illegal business operating under Calder control.”
Vale’s smile vanished.
Vincent continued.
“All financial records have been delivered to federal authorities.”
Vale lunged toward the camera.
“What did you do?”
Vincent smiled.
“Gave away the empire.”
Vale struck him.
Vincent’s head snapped sideways.
Rachel screamed behind the tape.
Vale grabbed Vincent’s jacket.
“You destroyed billions!”
“Yes.”
“You idiot!”
“Probably.”
“You think legitimate companies will save you?”
“No.”
“Then why?”
Vincent looked at Rachel.
Then thought of Emma sitting across from him with hot chocolate on her nose.
Claire sleeping upright after hospital shifts.
Daniel watching his daughter from shadows.
“Because I got tired of becoming my father.”
Vale pulled a weapon.
Everything happened at once.
Federal agents stormed the exits.
Lights exploded on.
Vale grabbed Rachel and pressed the weapon against her.
“BACK!”
Agents stopped.
Vincent raised his hands.
“Adrian.”
“Shut up!”
“You need a way out.”
“I need a car.”
“You won’t make the street.”
Vale’s breathing became ragged.
Vincent kept his voice calm.
“You spent eight years building this.”
“More.”
“Then don’t throw it away emotionally.”
Vale laughed wildly.
“You already threw it away!”
Rachel suddenly drove her heel backward into his shin.
Vale staggered.
Vincent moved.
He struck Vale’s wrist.
The weapon fell.
Rachel dropped.
Agents tackled Vale.
It ended in nine seconds.
Vincent stood frozen.
Rachel ripped the tape from her mouth.
“You absolute lunatic!”
Vincent stared.
“You’re welcome.”
“You gave away the organization?”
“Yes.”
“Uncle Anthony is going to rise from the dead and kill you.”
“He’ll have to wait.”
Rachel threw her arms around him.
Vincent hugged her.
Harder than he intended.
“You okay?”
“No.”
“Fair.”
Outside, Claire waited beside Daniel.
Vincent walked toward them.
Claire had tears in her eyes.
“You’re alive.”
“Disappointing several people.”
She crossed the distance and hugged him.
Vincent froze.
Then held her.
Over her shoulder, Daniel looked away.
The moment changed.
Claire noticed too.
She stepped back.
Vincent said nothing.
Daniel had returned.
Whatever had begun between Vincent and Claire belonged to an impossible space now.
Daniel approached.
“Vale’s done.”
“Yes.”
“And your organization?”
“Also done.”
“You understand what you just surrendered?”
Vincent looked toward the theater.
“Yes.”
Daniel held out his hand.
Vincent took it.
“Thank you.”
“For what?”
“For finally listening.”
Vincent almost laughed.
Then Daniel’s face became serious.
“There’s something Claire doesn’t know.”
Claire frowned.
“What?”
Daniel looked at her.
“The night I disappeared, I wasn’t alone.”
Her expression changed.
“What does that mean?”
“I had already decided to leave New York.”
Claire went still.
“With us?”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
The truth landed slowly.
Daniel’s eyes filled with shame.
“I was going to leave the marriage.”
Claire stepped backward.
Vincent said nothing.
Daniel continued.
“I loved you. I loved Emma. But I had been lying to you for months about the investigation, the money, everything.”
Claire’s face hardened.
“You let me believe for three years that our marriage was perfect until someone stole you.”
“I know.”
“You watched me wait.”
“I know.”
“Why tell me now?”
“Because if I come home, you deserve to know who is coming home.”
Claire closed her eyes.
Vincent walked away.
This was not his conversation.
But before he reached the car, Claire called his name.
He turned.
She looked shattered.
“Don’t disappear too.”
Vincent stopped.
May you like
“I won’t.”
