Chapter 2 - The Nursery Behind the Locked Door

Evan locked the examination-room door and pushed the ultrasound machine in front of it.
The handle moved again.
Slowly.
Deliberately.
Dr. Cole reached for the emergency button beside the sink.
Nothing happened.
“The system is disabled.”
Naomi pulled the blanket around herself.
Her entire body shook.
“He found me.”
“Who is he?” Evan asked.
“Calvin Rook.”
The name meant nothing to him.
“He worked nights at Hawthorne House,” Naomi explained.
“He called himself security, but he carried medication.”
Dr. Cole lowered the room lights.
“Is there another exit?”
“An equipment corridor behind the storage cabinet.”
He moved the cabinet and revealed a narrow service door used by technicians.
Evan helped Naomi sit up.
She cried out as her feet touched the floor.
Blood darkened the sheet beneath her.
“We cannot move her far,” Dr. Cole said.
“We cannot leave her here either.”
The front door shuddered beneath a heavy impact.
Once.
Twice.
Someone was trying to break the lock.
Evan placed one arm around Naomi.
Dr. Cole carried the portable fetal monitor.
They entered the service corridor seconds before the examination-room door burst open.
The corridor was barely wide enough for one person.
Metal shelves lined both sides.
Emergency lights glowed red along the floor.
Evan heard footsteps behind them.
Fast.
Controlled.
Naomi struggled to breathe.
“I can’t.”
“You can.”
“You don’t know that.”
“No.”
Evan tightened his arm around her waist.
“But we are not giving him either child.”
They reached a junction near the laboratory.
Dr. Cole opened a door and pulled them inside.
A young nurse was already hiding there.
Her name badge read MIA SANTOS.
She held a phone with no signal.
“They cut the network,” she whispered.
“Who?” Dr. Cole asked.
“A man in maintenance clothes. He used the executive elevator.”
Mia looked at Naomi.
Recognition crossed her face.
“You’re the patient from Hawthorne House.”
Naomi froze.
“How do you know me?”
Mia opened a locked drawer and removed a folder.
“Because my sister worked there.”
“Worked?”
“She disappeared six months ago.”
Her sister, Teresa Santos, had been a maternity nurse at Hawthorne House.
Teresa contacted Mia after discovering false patient charts and newborn transfers.
She believed the facility was helping wealthy clients obtain babies through fraudulent surrogate agreements.
Some patients knew they were surrogates.
Others did not.
When Teresa threatened to report the records, Dr. Vale claimed she stole medication.
Police issued a warrant.
Teresa vanished before she could defend herself.
Mia never believed she ran away.
“Your sister helped me,” Naomi said.
Mia stared at her.
“A nurse gave me a key card and told me the delivery room had a second exit.”
“She had a scar across her left thumb?”
“Yes.”
Mia’s eyes filled.
“Teresa is alive.”
“I don’t know.”
Naomi described the night she escaped.
Teresa entered her room after midnight and whispered that Baby B had never died.
She showed Naomi a real ultrasound image with two heartbeats.
Then she gave Naomi an access card and told her to follow the laundry corridor to an old ambulance garage.
Naomi asked Teresa to come.
Teresa refused.
“She said someone had to destroy the nursery records.”
“What nursery?” Evan asked.
Naomi looked at him.
“The hidden one.”
Hawthorne House had two maternity wings.
The public wing held pregnant patients.
The lower wing held newborns waiting to be transferred under altered identities.
Brooke’s nursery was already prepared.
A white crib.
Pink blankets.
A wooden sign reading AVERY ROSE HARTLEY.
The plan was to deliver both twins at Hawthorne House.
The first child would be registered as Naomi and Evan’s daughter.
The second would be declared stillborn.
Brooke would later appear publicly with an adopted newborn arranged through a private agency.
No one outside Celeste’s circle would connect the two events.
Evan covered his face.
“My mother planned to tell me one of my daughters died?”
Naomi looked at him.
“She expected you to believe her.”
The sentence cut deeply because it was true.
Celeste had spent his entire life deciding which information he was mature enough to hear.
Which relationships were respectable.
Which employees were loyal.
Which truth protected the Hartley name.
Evan had called it guidance.
Naomi had called it control.
He had defended his mother until the defense became a door someone could lock behind his wife.
Footsteps entered the laboratory corridor.
Mia turned off the light.
Through the narrow glass panel, they saw Calvin Rook moving past.
He wore medical scrubs now.
A pistol rested at his side.
A syringe protruded from his pocket.
He stopped.
Slowly, he turned toward the laboratory.
Naomi covered her mouth.
Rook approached the door.
Before he reached it, an alarm sounded from the opposite hallway.
He turned and ran toward the noise.
Mia released her breath.
“That was me,” Dr. Cole said.
He had activated a refrigerated-storage warning through the laboratory panel.
“It will delay him, not stop him.”
A loudspeaker crackled.
Celeste’s voice filled the clinic.
“Evan, this situation is becoming dangerous.”
He looked toward the ceiling.
His mother continued.
“Bring Naomi to the executive consultation suite.”
“No one wants to hurt her.”
Naomi stared at him.
“She’s inside.”
Evan’s anger became cold.
“Mother, unlock the exits.”
A pause followed.
“You do not understand the legal consequences.”
“I understand my wife was imprisoned.”
“She consented to residential treatment.”
“She was restrained.”
“For her safety.”
“You hid my daughter.”
“We preserved Brooke’s only chance to become a mother.”
Evan looked at Naomi.
His voice carried through the clinic.
“You had no right to promise away our child.”
Celeste answered with infuriating calm.
“You and Naomi already had one baby.”
The words silenced every person listening.
One baby.
As though children were portions divided according to need.
Brooke’s voice appeared next.
“I never wanted Naomi hurt.”
Naomi closed her eyes.
“You visited my room.”
“I came to see the baby.”
“You called her yours while she was inside me.”
“She was created from a Hartley pregnancy.”
“She was created by my body and my husband.”
Brooke began crying.
“You don’t know what it is like to be told you can never carry a child.”
Naomi’s voice remained steady.
“No.”
“But I know what it is like to be told the child moving inside me belongs to someone wealthier.”
The loudspeaker went silent.
Mia found an old landline inside the laboratory office.
It connected through an independent fire circuit.
She called 911.
Police were already outside, but the clinic’s private security had reported an armed, unstable patient holding a doctor hostage.
Celeste had written the first public version before authorities arrived.
Mia corrected it.
She identified Calvin Rook, described Naomi’s injuries, and told dispatchers where to breach the building.
Dr. Cole checked Naomi’s condition.
The bleeding had increased.
“We cannot wait.”
“The twins need delivery.”
Naomi shook her head.
“Not here.”
“There isn’t time to reach another hospital.”
Mia knew of a surgical suite on the clinic’s second floor.
The maternity center normally performed scheduled cesareans there.
It had independent power, blood supplies, and an external access balcony where emergency crews could enter.
The group began moving toward the service stairs.
Halfway there, Rook appeared at the opposite end of the corridor.
“Stop.”
Evan pushed Naomi behind him.
Rook raised the pistol.
“You were told to remain in the examination room.”
Dr. Cole stepped forward.
“She needs emergency surgery.”
“Mrs. Hartley arranged transport.”
“To Hawthorne House?” Naomi asked.
Rook smiled.
“To a place where no one will interfere.”
Mia slowly reached toward the wall alarm.
Rook pointed the pistol at her.
“Hands down.”
A door opened behind him.
Richard Hartley stepped into the corridor carrying a metal fire extinguisher.
He swung it into Rook’s shoulder.
The gun fired into the ceiling.
Evan rushed forward.
He struck Rook and drove him into the wall.
The two men fell.
Rook reached for the syringe.
Richard kicked it away.
Mia pulled the fire alarm.
Sirens exploded through the clinic.
Sprinklers activated.
Water poured from the ceiling as police broke through the eastern entrance.
Rook was restrained.
Richard leaned against the wall, breathing hard.
Evan stared at his father.
“How did you get here?”
“I followed Celeste.”
“You knew?”
“No.”
Richard’s face collapsed.
“I knew she was arranging something for Brooke.”
“I believed it was a legal surrogacy.”
“I stopped asking questions because your mother called questions disloyal.”
He looked at Naomi.
“I am sorry.”
Naomi doubled over before she could answer.
Dr. Cole caught her.
“We’re out of time.”
They rushed her to surgery.
Police secured the operating floor.
Celeste and Brooke were detained inside the executive consultation room.
Dr. Vale was not there.
His private helicopter had departed Hawthorne House thirty minutes earlier.
Inside the operating room, Naomi gripped Evan’s hand while the anesthesiologist prepared her.
“If I don’t wake up—”
“You will.”
“Don’t make promises you cannot control.”
He swallowed.
“You’re right.”
She stared into his eyes.
“If I don’t wake up, keep them together.”
“I will.”
“Do not let your mother rename either of them.”
“I won’t.”
“And don’t tell them I left.”
Evan bent over her hand.
“I will tell them you fought every person who tried to divide them.”
The surgery began.
The first baby was delivered crying.
A daughter with dark hair and powerful lungs.
Evan laughed and sobbed at the same time.
Then the surgeon reached for the second twin.
The room changed.
The smaller baby was silent.
The neonatal team surrounded her.
Naomi looked toward the empty space beyond the surgical drape.
“Why can’t I hear her?”
No one answered.
Evan watched a doctor begin chest compressions on a body small enough to fit between both hands.
Then Naomi’s monitor sounded.
Her blood pressure collapsed.
The damaged placenta had torn through a major vessel.
The surgeon shouted for more blood.
One team fought for the second baby.
Another fought for Naomi.
Evan stood between them, unable to reach either.
Outside the operating room, Brooke began screaming that Avery belonged to her.
May you like
And Celeste demanded that the hospital prepare only one birth certificate.
