Chapter 7 - THE EMPIRE FALLS

The raids began at dawn.
Federal agents entered Blackwell offices in Chicago, Detroit, Milwaukee, and Indianapolis. Computers were seized. Accounts were frozen. Executives were questioned.
News helicopters circled Blackwell Tower by noon.
My name was everywhere.
BILLIONAIRE DEVELOPER LINKED TO WAGE THEFT NETWORK.
BLACKWELL COMPANIES UNDER FEDERAL INVESTIGATION.
DID NATHAN BLACKWELL KNOW?
I did not run from the cameras.
I stood outside Blackwell Tower and spoke into every microphone.
“My company failed the people who worked for it,” I said. “Some of those failures were crimes. I did not know the full truth, but I should have. I was responsible for the culture that allowed it.”
Reporters shouted questions.
“Are you resigning?”
“Was your brother involved?”
“Did your wife’s death involve foul play?”
I looked into the cameras.
“Yes,” I said.
Then I walked away.
Elliot was arrested that evening at a private airfield outside Chicago.
He had planned to fly to the Bahamas under a false name.
When Tessa called, I drove to the station.
I needed to see him.
Elliot sat behind glass, wearing a wrinkled gray shirt instead of tailored suits. He looked smaller than I remembered.
“You ruined everything,” he said.
“No,” I replied. “You did.”
“You think those workers matter more than blood?”
“Yes.”
He stared at me.
“You’re serious.”
“Yes.”
Elliot laughed bitterly.
“Evelyn made you weak.”
“No. She showed me what I was becoming.”
“She was going to destroy us.”
“She was going to stop you.”
“She hated this family.”
“She loved me enough to tell the truth.”
Elliot’s expression twisted.
“You always loved her more than us.”
“You killed her because you were jealous?”
“I killed her because she was going to take everything.”
“Everything was never yours.”
He leaned closer to the glass.
“You think June Carter is grateful? You think she’ll forgive you because you gave her a check?”
“I’m not asking her to forgive me.”
“What are you asking for?”
“A chance to do better.”
Elliot looked away.
That was the last time I spoke to my brother without lawyers in the room.
But the scandal did not end with Elliot’s arrest.
The board turned against me.
They demanded I step down as chairman. Investors panicked. Banks called in loans. People who had benefited from Blackwell’s dirty money suddenly claimed they had been deceived too.
For once, I did not fight to keep control.
I resigned.
Then I used my personal wealth to establish a restitution fund.
Every worker cheated by Blackwell Domestic Services would receive back pay, damages, healthcare support, and legal protection.
June received the first check.
She stared at it for a long time.
“This is too much,” she said.
“It’s not enough,” I replied.
She looked at me.
“What do you want from me?”
Nothing.
That was the answer I should have given immediately.
Instead, I paused.
And June’s face tightened.
She had learned that wealthy men never gave without wanting something.
“I want you to tell me what you need,” I said.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I need a place where my kids can be kids,” she whispered.
So I gave her something that did not belong to Blackwell.
May you like
A choice.
