Chapter 5 - Victor’s Last Move

Victor did not attack the mansion.
That was the first thing Dominic noticed.
Men like Victor wanted chaos. Gunfire. Blood. A message written in fear.
Instead, he waited.
Then he hit the one place where I was trying to become human.
Lily’s school.
She had started attending a small private academy under a different name, with security discreetly placed nearby. Elena did not want her isolated, and I agreed. Lily deserved friends, classrooms, playgrounds, and ordinary days.
She deserved everything my world had stolen from her.
On a Thursday afternoon, a black SUV rammed the school transport van at an intersection.
The driver was injured. Two guards were knocked unconscious.
By the time Dominic’s backup team arrived, Lily and Elena were gone.
Victor called me from an unknown number.
“You survived the poison,” he said. “I admit, I’m disappointed.”
“If you hurt them—”
“You built your life by making people afraid, Adrian. Now you finally understand the feeling.”
My heart became something sharp and violent.
“Where are they?”
“Come alone.”
Dominic stood in my office, listening through speakerphone.
Victor gave an address: an abandoned warehouse near the old freight yards, where I had once made decisions I spent years trying to forget.
He chose it deliberately.
He wanted to drag me backward.
“Bring the documents Vanessa had,” Victor said. “The accounts. The names. Everything that could send us both to prison.”
“You’ll get them.”
“And Adrian?”
“What?”
“Come as the man you used to be. Not the father you’re pretending to become.”
The call ended.
Dominic immediately began organizing men.
“No,” I said.
“Boss—”
“He wants an army. He expects an army.”
“He has your daughter.”
“I know.”
“Then we do this properly.”
I looked at the city beyond my windows.
For thirty-two years, I had believed “properly” meant violence.
But I had nearly died because of that world. Vanessa had poisoned me because she believed I would never change. Victor had taken Lily because he believed fear still controlled me.
Maybe the only way to save my daughter was to prove them wrong.
“Call Detective Martinez,” I said.
Dominic stared at me.
“You want police involved?”
“I want Victor alive.”
“Why?”
“Because Lily deserves to grow up knowing monsters can be stopped without becoming one.”
The warehouse smelled like rust, rain, and old oil.
Victor stood on the upper platform with Elena beside him. Her wrists were bound. Lily sat behind her, terrified but unharmed.
When she saw me, she cried out.
“Daddy!”
The word nearly broke me.
“I’m here,” I called.
Victor smiled.
“Look at that. You learned a new role.”
“Let them go.”
“Bring me the files.”
I held up a briefcase.
“What you want is in here.”
Victor’s eyes narrowed. “Put it down.”
I did.
“And now?” I asked.
Victor pressed a gun to Elena’s head.
“Now you tell your people to leave.”
I looked toward the shadows.
Dominic’s team had already withdrawn to give federal agents a clear perimeter. The police were in position.
Victor did not know that.
“You have what you came for,” I said. “Release them.”
Victor laughed. “No. I have what I came for when I watch you choose. The empire or the family.”
“I already chose.”
He frowned.
“I chose them.”
The warehouse lights exploded on.
Federal agents stormed through the doors.
Victor spun, firing wildly.
Elena ducked, pulling Lily down with her.
I ran.
My body was still healing. My lungs burned. My legs felt weak. But I crossed the warehouse floor faster than I had moved in months.
Victor grabbed Lily before I reached them.
He held her against his chest, gun pressed near her shoulder.
“Stop!”
I did.
Lily was crying silently.
Her small hand reached toward me.
“Daddy.”
Victor smiled.
“Tell her who you really are.”
I looked at my daughter.
Then at the man who had spent his life convincing people that violence was power.
“My name is Adrian Romano,” I said. “And I made terrible choices.”
Victor’s grip tightened.
“But I am not going to make another one.”
I dropped my weapon.
Victor blinked.
That was all Dominic needed.
A single shot struck Victor’s arm. The gun flew across the floor.
Agents took him down.
Elena grabbed Lily and collapsed against a support beam.
I reached them seconds later.
Lily threw herself into my arms.
“You came,” she sobbed.
I held her so tightly I could barely breathe.
May you like
“I told you,” I whispered. “I’m staying.”
