Chapter 7 - THE FIRST REAL DATE LASTED ELEVEN MINUTES

Their first real date lasted eleven minutes.

Sophia had barely unfolded her napkin when Dominic’s phone rang twice.

Marco Bellini.

Or rather, Marco’s lawyer.

Dominic stared at the screen.

Two calls meant urgent.

Old rule.

Sophia saw the conflict.

“Answer.”

“I promised no business.”

“Answer.”

He did.

His face changed before the attorney finished the first sentence.

“What happened?”

Dominic stood.

Sophia’s stomach tightened.

He hung up.

“Marco escaped federal transport.”

“What?”

“Vehicle collision. Two guards injured.”

Sophia stood too.

“Where?”

“Queens.”

“Does he know where Lily is?”

Dominic went still.

Emma had taken Lily to a children’s museum.

He called Rocco.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Sophia was already grabbing her coat.

“Call Emma.”

She did.

Voicemail.

“No.”

Dominic called Matteo.

Answered.

“Where’s Rocco?”

Pause.

Dominic’s face hardened.

“What hospital?”

Sophia’s blood turned cold.

Rocco had been hit by a car outside the museum.

Emma and Lily were gone.

Sophia stopped breathing.

Dominic caught her arm.

“No.”

Her knees weakened.

“He took her.”

“We don’t know.”

“Marco knows Lily matters to you.”

“And you.”

“He knows.”

The promise in the barn came back.

Don’t let your world swallow that little girl.

Dominic closed his eyes once.

Then opened them.

Clear.

Controlled.

“We call police.”

Sophia stared at him.

“Yes.”

No private crews.

No retaliation.

No secret army.

The old Dominic would have flooded Queens with armed men.

This Dominic called the FBI case agent personally.

Gave them every camera, plate reader, account, property, safe house, and former contact Marco might use.

No conditions.

No demand for control.

Sophia noticed.

It did not make her less terrified.

Thirty-three minutes later, Emma called.

Sophia almost dropped the phone.

“Emma!”

“Soph!”

“Where are you?”

“I don’t know. Some warehouse.”

Lily cried in the background.

Sophia covered her mouth.

“Are you hurt?”

“No. He grabbed us outside after Rocco got hit.”

“Marco?”

“Yes.”

Dominic took the phone.

“Marco.”

The voice changed.

Calm.

“So she finally let you take her out.”

Dominic’s face became stone.

“What do you want?”

“Everything you gave prosecutors.”

“Done.”

“And ten million.”

“Done.”

Sophia looked at him.

No hesitation.

Marco laughed.

“You always were generous with things that weren’t yours.”

“Where are they?”

“You bring the money.”

“Law enforcement will track it.”

“Then find a way.”

Marco hung up.

Dominic immediately handed the phone to the FBI agent.

No hidden agenda.

No attempt to outsmart professionals alone.

The agent traced industrial noise on Emma’s call.

Train horns.

Metal stamping.

River traffic.

Possible warehouse cluster in Red Hook.

Dominic knew one Moretti property there.

Former bonded-storage building.

Closed three weeks earlier.

He gave them access codes.

Then Marco sent a video.

Emma tied to a chair.

Lily beside her.

Not tied.

Holding Mr. Whiskers.

Sophia nearly collapsed.

Marco walked into frame.

“Dominic.”

He crouched beside Lily.

She turned away.

“Your little friend wants her mother.”

Dominic’s hands clenched.

Marco continued.

“So here is the trade. You come alone.”

Sophia whispered:

“No.”

Dominic looked at her.

Marco continued:

“Because I want to know whether Maria Moretti’s son truly became soft enough to die for a maid.”

The video ended.

Sophia grabbed Dominic.

“You are not going alone.”

“I know.”

That surprised her.

He continued:

“I’m not giving Marco the old version of me.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means I follow the plan.”

Federal agents built one.

Dominic would appear to arrive alone.

Sophia would stay in the command vehicle.

Agents would enter through adjacent loading docks once Lily and Emma were visually confirmed.

Sophia hated every second.

But she accepted it because the plan centered rescue, not pride.

Dominic wore no gun.

Before he left the van, Sophia grabbed his hand.

“Come back.”

He looked at her.

“I intend to.”

“That is not a promise.”

“No.”

“Good.”

He understood.

Promises could not control bullets.

Then he said:

“But I’ll do everything I can.”

She nodded.

“That’s better.”

Dominic entered the warehouse.

Marco waited beneath hanging industrial lights.

Emma sat near the wall.

Lily stood beside her.

Dominic saw them.

His entire face changed.

Marco smiled.

“You really came without a weapon.”

“Yes.”

“Pathetic.”

“Probably.”

“Money?”

“In the car.”

“Files?”

“Already released.”

Marco’s expression hardened.

“What?”

“Every Bellini account. Every trafficking record. Every video. Every name.”

“You’re lying.”

“No.”

“You’d destroy Moretti.”

“Yes.”

Marco stared.

Dominic took another step.

“That’s the part you never understood.”

“What?”

“I don’t need the empire.”

Marco laughed.

“Everyone needs something.”

Dominic looked at Lily.

“Yes.”

Marco followed his gaze.

Then smiled.

“There it is.”

He grabbed Lily.

Sophia saw it through the command-van feed and screamed.

The FBI team moved.

Inside, Marco pressed a gun near Dominic.

“On your knees.”

Dominic did.

No argument.

Lily cried.

“Dom!”

Marco laughed.

“Look at you.”

Dominic looked at her.

“Lily.”

She sniffed.

“Remember the rabbit game?”

Sophia froze.

What rabbit game?

Lily’s face changed.

Dominic continued:

“When someone says freeze?”

Lily nodded.

“What comes next?”

“Drop.”

She dropped.

Instantly.

Marco’s arm emptied.

Dominic lunged sideways.

Agents breached.

Gunfire cracked.

Sophia screamed.

Then silence.

Five seconds.

Ten.

Radio chatter.

“Child secure.”

Sophia sobbed.

“Female adult secure.”

Then:

“Moretti hit.”

Everything inside her stopped.

She ran before anyone could stop her.

Across pavement.

Through the loading entrance.

Agents shouted.

She didn’t care.

Dominic was on the floor.

Blood darkened his side.

Lily sat beside him crying.

“Dom wake up.”

He was conscious.

Barely.

Sophia dropped.

“Dominic.”

His eyes found her.

“You were supposed to stay in the van.”

“Shut up.”

He almost smiled.

“Good date?”

She laughed and cried at once.

“Terrible.”

Agents loaded Marco into custody.

Alive.

Again.

Dominic saw him pass.

Did not react.

No threat.

No victory.

Just looked back at Lily.

“Are you okay?”

She nodded through tears.

He closed his eyes briefly.

Then whispered:

“Promise kept.”

Sophia knew what he meant.

Margaret.

The barn.

Safe enough.

“No.”

She gripped his hand.

“You don’t get to finish the promise by dying.”

His eyes opened.

“Bossy.”

“You have no idea.”

He survived surgery.

The bullet missed his liver by less than an inch.

Rocco survived too.

Broken leg.

Concussion.

Exceptionally bad mood.

Emma had bruises but nothing worse.

Lily refused to leave Dominic’s hospital room once he woke.

Hospital policy disagreed.

Lily won.

Three days later, Sophia sat beside Dominic’s bed.

He looked pale.

Human.

“I ruined dinner.”

“Yes.”

“Would you try again?”

She stared.

“You were shot.”

“That sounds like no.”

“That sounds like you need pain medication.”

He smiled faintly.

Sophia leaned down.

Kissed him.

Slowly.

For the first time.

When she pulled back, Dominic looked stunned.

“Was that pity?”

“No.”

“Medication?”

“Mine or yours?”

“Fair.”

She touched his cheek.

“That was me deciding I want the second date.”

His eyes softened.

“Good.”

Then Lily climbed onto the foot of the bed.

“Are you boyfriend now?”

Sophia closed her eyes.

Dominic answered:

“Apparently.”

Lily nodded.

“Good.”

Then she looked at Sophia.

“Grandma was right.”

Sophia’s eyes filled.

Yes.

Margaret had been right about more than any of them understood.

But Dominic still had one final part of the promise left.

May you like

He had made the world around them safer.

Now he had to decide what to build in place of the empire he destroyed.
