Chapter 9 - The Estate of Lies

The Bennett estate sat forty minutes outside Charlotte, hidden beyond iron gates and a long road lined with bare winter trees.

Daniel arrived alone.

At least, that was what Mercer was supposed to believe.

Detective Alvarez and her team were positioned nearby, waiting for confirmation before they moved in. Dante was somewhere on the property, though Daniel had no idea where.

The old house stood at the end of the drive like something from another century—dark brick, tall windows, ivy twisting along the stone walls.

Daniel stepped inside.

“Evelyn?” he called.

No answer.

The front doors slammed behind him.

Mercer emerged from the shadows of the grand staircase.

He was no longer smiling.

“Mr. Carter,” he said. “You came.”

“Where is Evelyn?”

“Safe enough.”

Daniel held up the copied files from the locker.

“You want these?”

Mercer descended one step at a time.

“I want you to understand the consequences of pretending to be something you are not.”

Daniel’s voice stayed calm. “You mean a father?”

Mercer’s eyes hardened.

“You have no idea what it takes to protect a family.”

“No,” Daniel said. “But I know what it doesn’t take.”

Mercer stopped.

“It doesn’t take threats. It doesn’t take fear. And it sure as hell doesn’t take making little girls feel like they have to hide under tables.”

For the first time, Mercer looked genuinely angry.

“You think Evelyn can manage that company? You think the board respects her? They tolerated her because Thomas was alive. Then he died, and suddenly everyone saw what she really was.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“A grieving widow raising four daughters?”

“A liability.”

“No,” Daniel said. “A woman you underestimated.”

Mercer laughed sharply.

“She needed me.”

“She needed you to stop stealing from her family’s company.”

The laugh vanished.

Daniel watched the truth hit him.

“You have the files,” Mercer said.

“I have copies.”

Mercer’s face went cold.

“You should have stayed at your hotel.”

“And you should have left those kids alone.”

A door opened upstairs.

Evelyn appeared at the top of the staircase.

Her wrists were bound in front of her, but she was standing straight.

Daniel’s heart pounded.

“Evelyn.”

“I’m okay,” she said quickly.

Mercer turned toward her. “You are not okay. You are reckless.”

Evelyn laughed once, bitterly.

“You had Thomas killed.”

Mercer’s expression changed.

Just slightly.

But it was enough.

Daniel’s phone, hidden in his pocket, was recording.

“I did not kill Thomas,” Mercer said.

“You had Victor sabotage his car.”

“Victor acted without my instruction.”

“You paid him.”

“I paid him to investigate Thomas.”

“And when Thomas found your accounts?”

Mercer’s jaw clenched.

“You don’t understand what Thomas was going to do. He was going to destroy everything.”

“No,” Evelyn said. “He was going to expose you.”

Mercer looked at her with something almost pitying.

“Your husband was weak. He believed truth mattered more than power.”

“And you believe power gives you the right to own people,” Evelyn replied.

Mercer’s gaze shifted toward Daniel.

“I offered you a place beside me,” he said to Evelyn. “I offered stability for you and those children.”

“You offered a cage.”

A gun appeared in Mercer’s hand.

Daniel’s body went cold.

“Give me the files,” Mercer said.

Outside, somewhere beyond the walls, a police siren wailed.

Mercer heard it too.

His eyes narrowed.

“You called them.”

Daniel said nothing.

Mercer grabbed Evelyn’s arm and pulled her toward a side hallway.

Daniel moved.

The gun fired.

The sound exploded through the house.

Evelyn screamed.

Daniel slammed into Mercer, and they crashed into a table. The gun skidded across the floor.

Mercer hit Daniel hard across the face.

Pain burst behind Daniel’s eyes.

But Daniel thought of Noah.

He thought of Ava’s fingers around his pant leg.

He thought of Claire insisting she was not dramatic.

He thought of Lily’s quiet tears and Emma’s watchful silence.

And he got back up.

Mercer reached for the gun.

Daniel reached for Evelyn.

Then Dante came through the hallway door like a storm.

He tackled Mercer before he could grab the weapon.

Seconds later, police flooded the room.

Detective Alvarez cuffed Mercer herself.

Mercer looked at Daniel as he was led away.

“This changes nothing,” he said.

Daniel wiped blood from his lip.

May you like

“No,” he replied. “It changes everything.”
