Chapter 11

The weeks after the hearing were... strange.
Quiet.
Peaceful.
For the first time in years, there was no drama.
No phone calls from Margaret.
No arguments with David.
No walking on eggshells.
Just me and Lily and Sarah.
Building a new life.
A better life.
David showed up for his first supervised visitation.
He was quiet.
Respectful.
He brought Lily a present—a new art set.
She was excited to see him.
But I could tell she was also a little nervous.
A little unsure.
The social worker was there, watching everything.
The visit went okay.
No big scenes.
No arguments.
But it was awkward.
Stilted.
Like they were strangers.
In a way, they were.
David had never really been present as a father.
Not really.
He'd been there physically.
But emotionally?
He'd always been somewhere else.
Worrying about his mother.
Worrying about keeping the peace.
Now he was trying to be a father.
But he didn't know how.
And Lily didn't know how to have a father who was actually there.
It was hard to watch.
But I didn't interfere.
This was between them.
And if David was serious about being in Lily's life, he had to figure it out.
Margaret didn't go away quietly.
She appealed the decision.
She called Emily and screamed at her for being a traitor.
She tried to send letters to Lily through David.
But the social worker caught them.
And the court found out.
And her appeal was denied.
And she was given a warning.
One more violation, and she'd go to jail.
After that, we didn't hear from her again.
It was like she'd vanished.
And honestly?
It was a relief.
I started looking for a place of our own.
Sarah had been amazing.
But it was time for me and Lily to have our own home.
Our own space.
I found a small townhouse, not too far from Sarah's house.
Three bedrooms.
A backyard.
A fireplace.
It was perfect.
We moved in on a sunny Saturday in May.
Lily was so excited she could barely contain herself.
She ran from room to room, claiming which one would be hers.
"This one!" she shouted, pointing to the biggest bedroom. "This is going to be my princess room!"
I laughed.
"Okay, baby," I said. "Your princess room."
We spent the day unpacking.
Sarah came over to help.
Emily came too.
We ordered pizza.
We laughed.
We made a new home.
That night, after everything was unpacked, I tucked Lily into her new bed.
She looked around her room, her eyes wide with wonder.
"Mommy?"
"Yeah, baby?"
"Is this our forever home?"
I smiled, brushing the hair from her face.
"For as long as we want it to be," I said.
She smiled, snuggling into her pillow.
"I like it," she said. "I feel safe here."
My heart felt full.
"I'm glad, baby," I said. "I'm so glad."
I kissed her goodnight and left the room.
I stood in the hallway for a moment, looking at the closed door.
And I thought about everything we'd been through.
The fear.
The pain.
The betrayal.
And I thought about where we were now.
Safe.
Free.
Happy.
It hadn't been easy.
It had cost me my marriage.
My idea of a perfect family.
But it had been worth it.
Because Lily was safe.
And she was happy.
And that's all that mattered.
I went downstairs and poured myself a glass of wine.
I sat on the couch in my new living room, looking out the window at the stars.
And for the first time in a long time, I felt hopeful.
About the future.
About me and Lily.
About what was to come.
We were going to be okay.
May you like
Better than okay.
We were going to thrive.
