Chapter 8 - THE LITTLE GIRL WHO LEFT A TRAIL

There is no sound like a mother hearing her child has been taken.

People expect screaming.

I did not scream.

I became quiet.

Terrifyingly quiet.

“What happened?” I asked Oliver.

Matteo knelt beside the phone.

Oliver cried.

“The lights went off.”

Federal officers at the residence had been attacked with a gas released through the ventilation system.

Two were unconscious.

One was injured.

Oliver had hidden beneath a bed because Emma pushed him there.

That was my daughter.

Protecting someone else while terrified.

“What did Julian say?” Matteo asked.

Oliver sniffed.

“He said Emma had to come.”

“Did she fight?”

“Yes.”

Despite everything, Matteo almost smiled.

Of course she did.

Oliver continued.

“She kicked him.”

“That’s my girl,” I whispered.

Matteo looked at me.

Our girl.

We arrived at the residence seventeen minutes later.

Emma’s pink hair clip lay beside the stairs.

I picked it up.

“She dropped this.”

Enzo frowned.

“Could’ve fallen.”

“No.”

I knew Emma.

“She hates this clip.”

Matteo stared.

“What?”

“She says it pulls.”

“Then why was she wearing it?”

“I made her because school pictures were supposed to be tomorrow.”

I looked toward the hallway.

“She dropped it on purpose.”

We searched.

Near the rear door, one glitter sticker.

Then another outside.

Silver stars.

Emma carried a sheet of them in her jacket pocket.

She was leaving us a trail.

Matteo’s face changed.

“You taught her that?”

“No.”

“She taught herself.”

The stickers ended at tire tracks.

Traffic cameras captured Julian’s vehicle heading north.

Then east.

Then disappearing near an industrial district.

Matteo stared at the map.

“I know where he’s going.”

“Where?”

“Old Moretti printing plant.”

The same building where the family once produced shipping manifests and cash-heavy betting records decades earlier.

Closed for fifteen years.

Owned under a forgotten corporation.

By the time we arrived, police had formed a perimeter.

I wanted inside.

Matteo refused.

I ignored him.

Again.

“If she sees only armed men, she’ll panic.”

“She cannot see you get hurt.”

“She needs her mother.”

“And I need both of you alive.”

The words broke something open.

I looked at him.

His voice dropped.

“I already lost six years.”

He touched my face.

“I cannot lose tonight.”

I covered his hand.

“You won’t.”

We entered through a service corridor with Enzo and two tactical officers.

The building was dark.

Old presses loomed like skeletons.

Then I saw one silver star on the floor.

“Here.”

Another ten feet ahead.

Emma had kept going.

At the end of the corridor, we heard voices.

Julian.

And Emma.

“You’re mean.”

My eyes filled.

Matteo nearly laughed despite the situation.

Julian answered, “Your mother thinks that too.”

“She’s smart.”

“She is.”

“Then you should listen to her.”

Matteo closed his eyes briefly.

My fearless little girl.

We moved closer.

Julian had Emma inside a glass-walled supervisor’s office above the factory floor.

She sat in a chair.

Not tied.

Julian had underestimated a six-year-old.

Again.

Emma’s eyes moved toward the corridor.

She saw me.

I pressed one finger to my lips.

Her face did not change.

She looked back at Julian.

“What do you want?”

He smiled.

“For your father to make a choice.”

“Matteo?”

“Yes.”

She frowned.

“I only found out he was my dad yesterday.”

“I know.”

“That’s not much time.”

Julian laughed.

“No.”

Emma folded her arms.

“You should give him more.”

Even Matteo looked stunned.

Julian turned toward the window.

That was when Emma moved.

She kicked the chair backward into his knees.

Julian stumbled.

Matteo exploded through the door.

I followed.

Julian recovered fast.

He grabbed Emma.

Gun raised.

“Stop!”

Matteo froze.

My daughter stood against Julian’s chest.

His gun near her head.

Every nightmare I had ever had became real.

“Let her go,” Matteo said.

Julian laughed.

“Put your weapon down.”

Matteo did.

Immediately.

It hit the floor.

“Kick it away.”

He did.

Julian looked at me.

“And yours.”

“I don’t have one.”

“Of course.”

His smile twisted.

“The nurse.”

“Yes.”

He pulled Emma backward.

“Where are you going?” Matteo asked.

“Away.”

“You won’t make it outside.”

“Then neither does she.”

Emma’s eyes found mine.

She was terrified now.

Finally.

I spoke softly.

“Em.”

“Mommy.”

“Remember when you fell off the monkey bars?”

Julian frowned.

“What?”

Emma stared at me.

I continued.

“You couldn’t breathe because you were scared.”

She nodded.

“What did we do?”

“Counted.”

“That’s right.”

I needed her calm.

“One.”

Emma whispered, “Two.”

“Three.”

Matteo understood.

He shifted half an inch.

Julian noticed.

“Don’t.”

Matteo froze again.

“Four,” I said.

Emma’s breathing slowed.

“Five.”

Her eyes moved downward.

Julian held her with one arm across her chest.

His balance was wrong.

“Six.”

Emma lifted both feet.

Then dropped her entire weight.

Julian instinctively tightened his grip.

That lowered the gun.

Matteo moved.

One second.

That was all.

He slammed Julian against the wall.

The gun skidded away.

I grabbed Emma.

She screamed into my chest.

Behind us came fists, shouting, officers entering.

Matteo had Julian against the floor.

His hands around his brother’s throat.

“Matteo!”

He did not hear me.

Julian laughed even while choking.

“Do it.”

Matteo’s grip tightened.

“Matteo!”

I shoved Emma toward Enzo and grabbed Matteo’s shoulder.

“Look at me.”

He did.

His face was not human with rage.

“He took her.”

“I know.”

“He tried to kill Oliver.”

“I know.”

“He killed Celeste.”

“I know.”

“He took you from me.”

My voice broke.

“I know.”

“Move.”

“No.”

“Sophia.”

“If you kill him now, he still takes something from us.”

Matteo stared.

“Your children are watching.”

His eyes moved.

Emma stood beside Enzo.

Oliver was not there, but Matteo seemed to see him anyway.

Slowly, Matteo released Julian.

Federal officers pulled his brother away.

Julian coughed.

Then smiled.

“You became weak.”

Matteo stood.

“No.”

He looked at Emma.

Then me.

“I finally found something stronger than you.”

Julian’s smile disappeared.

Emma ran to Matteo.

He caught her carefully because of his wound.

She wrapped her arms around his neck.

For three seconds, he looked stunned.

Then she whispered the word he had waited six years to hear.

“Dad.”

Matteo closed his eyes.

He held her.

May you like

And cried.
