Chapter 6 - A Family Reclaimed
Spring came slowly to the Cascade Mountains.
The snow melted from the roads first, then the rooftops, then the long driveway leading to Nathan’s glass house.
Sarah and the children moved into the east wing after leaving the hospital.
At first, Sarah resisted.
“I can find an apartment,” she told Nathan.
“You need time to heal.”
“I don’t want to be a burden.”
Nathan looked at her.
“Sarah, you are my sister. Lily, Owen, and Ethan are my family. That is not a burden.”
She stared at him.
Then nodded.
Healing was not easy.
Sarah woke from nightmares.
Lily refused to sleep unless the door remained open and a light stayed on in the hallway.
The twins cried at sudden noises.
Nathan learned how to make bottles at three in the morning. He learned that Owen liked being held against the left shoulder and Ethan preferred music. He learned that Lily would only eat carrots if Rosa called them “snowman snacks.”
The mansion changed.
There were toys in the living room.
Crayon marks on the kitchen counter.
Baby blankets drying near the fireplace.
Laughter in rooms that had once echoed with nothing.
Nathan returned to work part-time, but his priorities had changed.
He left the hospital on time.
He declined conferences.
He ignored calls from people who believed a man with his career should not be distracted by family.
One afternoon, Lily walked into his office holding a small paper bag.
“What’s that?” Nathan asked.
“A surprise.”
She placed it on his desk.
Inside was a new bracelet.
Not expensive silver. Not engraved metal.
It was made of colored beads.
Green, blue, yellow, and pink.
“I made it for you,” Lily said. “So you remember us.”
Nathan looked at it.
His vision blurred.
“I’ll never forget you,” he said.
Lily climbed onto his lap.
“Mommy says people can get lost even when they’re not far away.”
Nathan held her close.
“She’s right.”
“But then they can come back?”
He looked at Sarah standing in the doorway.
His sister had heard the question.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Yes,” Nathan said softly. “They can come back.”
A month later, Dr. Halden was arrested in Vancouver after trying to cross the border under a false identity.
Marcus agreed to testify against him in exchange for avoiding some federal charges, but Detective Holt made it clear that his sentence would still be long.
When Sarah heard, she did not celebrate.
She only looked at Nathan and said, “I don’t want him to control any more of our lives.”
“He won’t,” Nathan promised.
“What happens now?”
Nathan looked around the room.
Lily was building a blanket fort. Owen was asleep in Rosa’s arms. Ethan was laughing at a sunbeam on the floor.
“Now,” Nathan said, “we build something better.”
Sarah smiled through tears.
