Chapter 6 - The Terminal of Ghosts

They escaped through an underground passage beneath Adrian’s study.

Reggie’s men held the safe-room entrance while Adrian led me through a hidden corridor that smelled of dust, stone, and old smoke.

“Your father built these tunnels?” I asked as we moved through the darkness.

“My grandfather,” Adrian replied.

“Of course he did.”

Even now, fear could not stop the bitterness in my voice.

Adrian glanced at me.

“You can hate my family later.”

“I have been hating them for four years.”

“That seems fair.”

It was the closest thing to humor either of us could manage.

We emerged in a garage two streets from the estate. Reggie met us there with an armored sedan.

“The house is secure,” he said. “Three intruders captured. Two escaped.”

“Any word on Charlotte?” Adrian asked.

Reggie shook his head.

“No. But we tracked Calder’s communications. The terminal is real.”

Adrian looked at me.

“You stay in the car.”
