Chapter 4 - THE BALLROOM TRAP

Ward’s helicopter disappeared between the buildings before Luca’s men could respond.
Vincent looked at the drive Marco had given him.
The evidence might destroy Ward eventually.
It would not save the people at St. Agnes today.
“We divide,” Luca said. “Half the team clears the hotel. The rest goes to the ballroom.”
“No,” Vincent replied. “Ward expects armed men connected to me. Every weapon we bring strengthens her story.”
“She has Elias’s son.”
“And dozens of civilians.”
Angela finally stood after Luca cut her restraints. Sophia crashed into her arms.
For several seconds, the danger around them disappeared. Angela sank to her knees, kissing her daughter’s hair and repeating her name.
Vincent watched in silence.
He had built an empire partly because family had always been the one thing he could not replace.
Yet his sister had been living only blocks away, frightened to step into the light.
Angela looked up at him.
“I’m sorry.”
“You survived.”
“I should have found a way to tell you.”
“You survived,” he repeated. “That is enough for today.”
Elias examined the map on Marco’s phone. The charity ballroom connected to St. Agnes Hospital through a service tunnel used for catering and emergency access.
Ward’s team would control the visible entrances.
She might not know about the old laundry corridor beneath the hospital.
Vincent made a call to Miriam Cole, a defense attorney who had represented his companies for twelve years.
“I’m sending you a drive,” he said. “Copy everything. Deliver it to the Department of Justice inspector general, three newspapers and Judge Raymond Hale.”
“Raymond Hale is attending the St. Agnes event.”
“That’s why Ward chose it.”
There was a pause.
“What have you gotten yourself into, Vincent?”
“Something older than most of my crimes.”
He transferred the files through an encrypted connection Marco had prepared.
At exactly noon, the first release of Ward’s records reached the media.
Headlines changed within minutes.
FEDERAL TASK-FORCE LEADER ACCUSED OF SECRET ASSET THEFT.
LEAKED FILES SUGGEST WITNESS ABUSE.
AGENT ELENA WARD MISSING FROM COMMAND POST.
Ward no longer controlled the story.
But she still controlled the building.
By 11:05, Vincent’s group entered the hospital through a delivery entrance. Angela and Sophia remained in a secure clinic with two of Luca’s most trusted guards.
Sophia refused to release Vincent’s ring.
“You have to come back for this,” she told him.
“I will.”
“Promise?”
“I already did.”
Vincent, Luca and Elias moved through the underground corridor without weapons visible. Elias carried a maintenance bag. Luca wore hospital scrubs over his clothes.
Vincent wore the dark suit Agent Ward had expected him to wear when he left home that morning.
As they approached the ballroom, music vibrated through the walls.
More than two hundred guests were attending the foundation luncheon. Politicians, surgeons, judges and wealthy donors filled the room beneath crystal chandeliers.
On the stage, Judge Raymond Hale spoke about funding children’s trauma care.
He had no idea several men disguised as federal agents had sealed the exits.
Elias spotted his son near the kitchen doors.
The boy sat beside a man wearing a waiter’s uniform. A wire ran from beneath his jacket toward a black case on the floor.
Elias started forward.
Vincent caught his arm.
“That is what she wants.”
“He’s my son.”
“And Ward knows you’ll stop thinking when you see him.”
Vincent studied the room through a narrow service window.
Three suspicious cases were positioned near structural columns. Whether they contained explosives or transmitters did not matter.
Panic alone could kill people in a crowded ballroom.
Vincent used Marco’s phone to call Ward.
She answered immediately.
“I was wondering when you would arrive.”
“You wanted the ledger.”
“I want the original.”
“There is no original anymore. The files went public five minutes ago.”
For the first time, Ward was silent.
Vincent continued.
“Killing anyone inside that room will confirm every document.”
“You assume I still care about surviving this.”
“No. I assume you care about winning.”
Ward laughed softly.
“You do know me.”
“Release the boy and the guests.”
“Walk into the ballroom alone.”
Luca shook his head.
Vincent opened the service door.
The room fell silent as soon as he entered.
People recognized him instantly.
Some moved away. Others reached for their phones.
The disguised agents raised their weapons.
Vincent lifted his empty hands.
Judge Hale stared from the stage.
“Mr. Torino?”
A spotlight switched on above Vincent.
Ward’s voice came through the ballroom speakers.
“Ladies and gentlemen, remain calm. Vincent Torino has entered the building as part of an active criminal threat.”
Vincent looked around.
“She wants you to believe I brought the danger with me.”
The guests began murmuring.
“She wants you looking at me instead of the black cases beside the columns.”
Heads turned.
Ward’s men reacted immediately.
“Do not move!” one shouted.
Judge Hale stepped away from the podium. “Who authorized this operation?”
No one answered.
Vincent continued walking toward the center of the room.
“Agent Ward has been stealing federal evidence and controlling protected witnesses for fifteen years. The documents are already public.”
The ballroom erupted with phone notifications.
Guests began reading the breaking-news alerts.
Ward had lost the room.
One of her contractors grabbed Elias’s son and pressed a weapon against his back.
Elias entered through the kitchen.
“Let him go!”
The contractor dragged the boy toward the nearest exit.
Luca struck him from behind with a serving cart. The weapon slid across the floor.
Guests screamed and dropped beneath tables.
Vincent ran toward the black case beside the stage.
It contained wires, a radio and a digital clock.
But no explosive material.
Another bluff.
Then he looked toward the chandelier.
A tiny red light blinked above the crowd.
“The cases are decoys,” Vincent shouted. “The real device is overhead!”
Luca climbed onto the stage structure.
A contractor fired toward him.
Vincent knocked the man’s arm aside. The shot shattered a window instead.
Federal sirens screamed outside.
Not Ward’s private team this time.
The Justice Department had arrived.
Luca tore open the chandelier’s control box and found a transmitter wired into the building’s emergency gas system.
“It will trigger an evacuation failure!” he shouted. “The doors will lock and the ventilation will shut down.”
Ward had never needed an explosion.
She intended to fill the ballroom with gas from the hospital’s sterilization system, leaving hundreds of bodies and electronic evidence pointing toward Vincent.
Judge Hale reached the main control panel and entered his judicial emergency code.
The ballroom doors unlocked.
“Everyone out!” he ordered.
Guests flooded toward the exits.
Elias reached his son and pulled him into his arms.
Vincent looked around for Ward.
She was not in the room.
Then his phone rang.
Angela’s number appeared on the screen.
He answered.
No one spoke.
A video opened instead.
Angela lay unconscious on the clinic floor.
The two guards assigned to protect her were gone.
Sophia stood alone near the doorway, still holding Vincent’s ring.
Agent Ward stepped into view behind her.
She placed both hands on Sophia’s shoulders.
“You exposed my operation,” Ward said. “So now I’m going to take the only family you have left.”
The video shifted, revealing the person holding the camera.
Vincent recognized him instantly.
His oldest adviser.
His godfather.
The man who had raised him after his father died.

Salvatore Torino smiled into the lens.
“Marco was right,” Salvatore said. “The traitor was always above Luca.”
