Chapter 4 - The Child He Never Knew About

Daniel could not hear the rain anymore.

He could not hear Officer Patterson asking Vanessa to step back. He could not hear William Ross saying his name. He could not hear Evelyn crying softly from the bottom of the stairs.

All he could hear was one sentence repeating inside his skull.

Claire was pregnant.

He looked at the date again, hoping he had misunderstood.

He had not.

The report had been issued two weeks before the divorce papers. Two weeks before he stood across from Claire in the dining room and accused her of trapping him in a loveless marriage. Two weeks before he told her Vanessa made him feel alive again.

Claire had known.

And she had said nothing.

Daniel lifted his eyes slowly.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Claire’s face was pale, but her voice stayed calm.

“I tried.”

The answer barely came out.

Daniel shook his head. “No. You didn’t.”

“I called you the night I found out.” Her eyes glistened, but no tears fell. “Vanessa answered your phone.”

Vanessa rolled her eyes. “Oh, please.”

Claire turned toward her. “You told me Daniel was in the shower. You told me he knew and that he didn’t care. You said if I used a baby to pull him back, you would make sure Evelyn paid for it.”

Daniel turned to Vanessa.

For once, she did not have a perfect response ready.

“That’s absurd,” Vanessa said.

Claire opened her folder again.

“Then you won’t mind hearing the recording.”

Vanessa’s expression cracked.

Claire removed a small flash drive from the folder and handed it to William Ross.

“I kept everything.”

Daniel remembered the way Claire used to organize receipts, medical papers, school forms, company tax documents. He used to tease her for it. He used to say she could build a legal case out of a grocery list.

Now she had.

William plugged the flash drive into his tablet. Vanessa lunged forward, but Officer Patterson blocked her.

The recording began.

Vanessa’s voice filled the foyer.

Daniel doesn’t want another child with you, Claire. He wants a life. He wants me. If you tell him, I’ll make sure Evelyn goes somewhere cold and lonely, and I’ll make sure Daniel believes it was your fault.

Daniel’s hand tightened around the medical report until the paper bent.

Claire’s voice came next, shaking but clear.

If you hurt Evelyn, I’ll go to the police.

Vanessa laughed on the recording.

With what proof? Your husband thinks you’re unstable.

The audio ended.

No one spoke.

Vanessa’s face had gone hard and expressionless.

Daniel looked at Claire. “The baby?”

Claire placed one hand over her stomach.

For the first time that night, Daniel noticed the careful looseness of her coat.

“I’m still pregnant,” she said softly.

Evelyn covered her mouth.

Daniel took one step toward Claire, then stopped himself.

He had lost the right to reach for her.

“How far?” he asked.

“Four months.”

Four months.

Four months of Claire going to appointments alone. Four months of raising their son while hiding grief and fear. Four months of protecting his mother from a distance because Daniel had shut every door in her face.

Daniel turned to Vanessa.

The woman he had chosen stood beneath the chandelier with wet eyes and a lifted chin, still trying to look wronged.

“You threatened my wife,” he said.

“She is not your wife anymore,” Vanessa snapped.

Claire’s voice cut through the room.

“Actually, I am.”

Vanessa froze.

Claire looked at Daniel, and there was no softness in her expression.

“I never signed.”

Daniel stared at her.

Claire continued. “Not because I wanted you back. Because my attorney found evidence Vanessa was influencing financial decisions during the separation. If I signed before reviewing the company exposure, Noah and the baby could lose protection.”

William nodded. “That is accurate.”

Daniel looked down.

Even abandoned, humiliated, and pregnant, Claire had still been guarding their children.

He had been busy guarding his ego.

Officer Patterson moved closer to Vanessa.

“Ms. Cole, we need you to come with us while we sort out the allegations regarding elder abuse, coercion, and possible fraud.”

Vanessa laughed again, but this time it shook.

“You don’t have anything. A recording? Some papers? Daniel invited me into this house. Daniel gave me access. Daniel wanted Claire gone.”

Every word was true enough to hurt him.

Daniel nodded.

“I did.”

Claire looked at him.

He turned to Officer Patterson. “And I’ll make a full statement.”

Vanessa’s smile vanished.

Daniel looked at William. “Freeze every account she touched. Notify the board. Send the forged documents to forensic review. And revoke her access to every property, card, and company system tonight.”

William was already typing. “Done.”

Vanessa’s face twisted.

“You pathetic man,” she hissed. “You think Claire will take you back because you finally opened your eyes?”

Daniel flinched, but he did not look away.

“No,” he said. “I think she’ll never trust me again. And she’ll be right.”

For the first time, Claire’s face softened—not with forgiveness, but with surprise.

Officer Patterson guided Vanessa toward the door.

At the threshold, Vanessa stopped.

Then she smiled over her shoulder.

“You still don’t know everything.”

Daniel’s blood ran cold.

Vanessa looked directly at Claire.

“Ask her what happened the night your son called me crying.”

Claire’s face went completely still.

Daniel turned.

“What night?”

Claire whispered, “Daniel…”

May you like

Vanessa’s smile widened.

“The night Noah disappeared for three hours.”
